to think Ronan Keating can’t sing? Which other famous singers can’t sing?

When I was a teenager I thought Ronan Keating had a great voice (despite not being my type of music) but I think I probably just fancied him. I’ve just heard one of his songs from around 1999 pop up on a Spotify playlist and he sounds like a goat yelping into a Pringles can.

I know lots of pop stars can’t sing for shite but in my head I had him in a bracket of people who can sing nicely - despite probably not having listened to his music for 20+ years.

Can RK sing?

Which other pop stars who people think are decent singers actually turn out to sound like a farm yard animal with trapped wind.

@pepperaunt

Sorry have just skimmed thread. Has anyone mentioned Lady Gaga? She was so flat singing at the inauguration (particular bugbear)
She was phenomenal at....some sporting event. I hadn't known she could sing because her style of music is so poppy and processed that you couldn't tell if she was genuinely good or not.
picknmix1984 · 05/03/2021 16:32

I absolutely cannot stand listening to Paul McCartney. He's awful. Urghh.

Cocolapew · 05/03/2021 16:35

@MMfanalltheway

Adele is a pub singer at best.

Are you tone deaf?

No I just have good taste Smile
MasterBeth · 05/03/2021 16:36

Paul McCartney is in his 80s. Admittedly, his voice is not what it was...

But the more attention I pay to his vocals the more incredible they are, from the Little Richard screams of the early Beatles material, to the beautiful close mic technique of a song like Blackbird.

And, of course, all sung way before the invention of auto tune etc.

seashells11 · 05/03/2021 16:38

Another one here shocked at George Michael. I mean if he couldn't sing I'd like to know who could. Jeeze.

seashells11 · 05/03/2021 16:40

Paul McCartney's harmonies with John Lennon were brilliant. Sadly Paul hasn't got the voice anymore.

MasterBeth · 05/03/2021 16:41

This thread is stupid. Most of the people listed can sing, but the poster doesn’t like their singing.

I hate the noise that comes out of Celine Dion, but she can sing.

I love the Pet Shop Boys, but Neil Tennant can’t really.

DrSbaitso · 05/03/2021 16:41

The crap X Factor etc auditions are interesting because they show you how many ways there are to be a bad singer. Very often it's not that they're out of tune; they are on the note more than I would expect but they're still ear bleeders for other reasons.

MasterBeth · 05/03/2021 16:43

I think the one thing we can all agree on is Cheryl Cole.

GreatTeaMonkey · 05/03/2021 16:44

Madonna.

The red hot chilli peppers were very disappointing live.

Yep, that one shocked me too. Think I've had enough internet for today Confused
Caramelwhispers · 05/03/2021 16:45

Agreed with pp who said Chris Martin from Coldplay can't sing.

CuteOrangeElephant · 05/03/2021 16:46

Leonard Cohen... he was amazing when I saw him in concert though.

LemonadeBudget · 05/03/2021 16:48

I had to click off the Sting cover super fast due to second hand embarrassment. Even the first few bars of instrumental sounded 'wrong', like Les Dawson playing the piano Grin

beguilingeyes · 05/03/2021 16:49

People saying Paul McCartney..are they just judging him on the last 10 years and Olympics and stuff?

He's an actual Beatle FFS.

Merriden · 05/03/2021 16:49

@fourquenelles

Madonna. First time I heard her I thought someone was strangling a sheep.
She came to my mind too
NeverSurrender · 05/03/2021 16:50

@notacooldad

Bob Dylan. OK not a pop star but an absolute legend. His song writing is awesome but he is definitely better leaving it other people to sing his songs!
Totally agree with this ! I went to see him live and it was awful Shock
MasterBeth · 05/03/2021 16:52

@Caramelwhispers

I might get shot down for this but the Gibbs brothers from the Bee Gees particularly Robin. Cilla Black couldn't sing either, however these singers were entertainers so got away with it.
Here’s Cilla not being able to sing, pushed by Burt Bacharach who famously writes music that’s dead easy to sing by terrible singers:
Caramelwhispers · 05/03/2021 16:56

With Cilla it's just a load of shouting!

NerrSnerr · 05/03/2021 16:58

Adele wouldn't be an artist I chose to listen to but of course she can sing.

Even if you don't like an artist's music you can still admit they can sing.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 05/03/2021 17:00

Grin at Adele being a pub singer. The woman has phenomenal control, range and sensitivity, along with a natural warmth and depth.

As for Whitney... well, if we're talking about technique and control, she was exceptional.

Smokeahontas · 05/03/2021 17:02

His voice isn’t my cup of tea. More of an issue with the fact he’s a massive arsehole.

zxy12 · 05/03/2021 17:03

@ChelseeDagger

Ariana Grande.

Marvellous range, granted but I can't understand a word of her lyrics. Worst diction in the industry, and that's saying something!

Completely agree. There's a line in One Last Time that's meant to be "at least just temporarily". At best, it's "wemporary". Like the song but that line drives me nuts every time I hear it. It's pre recorded, how hard can it be to record it with the correct number of syllables if nothing else?!
MrsMariaReynolds · 05/03/2021 17:10

Got to agree with those who are a bit 🤔🤨 at the idea that the likes of George Michael and Adele are bad singers. Seriously? If they can't sing, there's no hope for anyone else.

I do agree with the suggestions of Madonna and Jess Glynne though. Have to add Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Lana Del Rey to the list. Thank God for autotune...

TSBelliot · 05/03/2021 17:11

God Cilla!

How she ever dared.
