to think Ronan Keating can’t sing? Which other famous singers can’t sing?

When I was a teenager I thought Ronan Keating had a great voice (despite not being my type of music) but I think I probably just fancied him. I’ve just heard one of his songs from around 1999 pop up on a Spotify playlist and he sounds like a goat yelping into a Pringles can.

I know lots of pop stars can’t sing for shite but in my head I had him in a bracket of people who can sing nicely - despite probably not having listened to his music for 20+ years.

Can RK sing?

Which other pop stars who people think are decent singers actually turn out to sound like a farm yard animal with trapped wind.

@peak2021 what do you mean you dont class it as music?! What else is it?!

It might not be to your taste but it's still music?!

I cant bear Rod Stewart's voice. Dont knowing he can technically sing but I dont find it enjoyable to listen to

DGRossetti · 05/03/2021 16:17

I think Rich Halls comment on Dylan was pretty accurate ..

Powerplant · 05/03/2021 16:17

Rod Stewart!

MMfanalltheway · 05/03/2021 16:17

@Downthefarm

God help us, there is nobody you lot wouldn't name! 😄
Bob Dylan, Bono, Adele, Rihanna, Bruce are some of my favourite singers. Funny thing is taste!
MMfanalltheway · 05/03/2021 16:18

Michael Bublé Christ I can't listen to him. I literally have to turn it off when he comes on as it assaults my ears.

Devlesko · 05/03/2021 16:19

All of them.

ChelseeDagger · 05/03/2021 16:19

Ariana Grande.

Marvellous range, granted but I can't understand a word of her lyrics. Worst diction in the industry, and that's saying something!

Cocolapew · 05/03/2021 16:19

@Snookie00

These posters saying that George Michael, Beyoncé and Adele can’t sing. Who do they think is a good singer?

Not liking their style of music doesn’t mean that someone can’t sing. And these professionally trained “friends” that are scathing of famous singers always seems like petty jealousy.

Drunk in Love makes me want to rip my ears off. Adele is a pub singer at best. 😌
Frequentflier · 05/03/2021 16:19

@Giggorata

I'm inclined to the view of a few posters upthread, that auto tune has made it unnecessary to have any skill or talent whatsoever.

As long as you look good prancing about in skimpy clothing, you're in

I have noticed that invariably the best singers on those talent shows don't win, they get passed over for the pretty ones, men or women.

I think men can be extremely average looking and still successful: Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi etc etc. There are very few average looking women in the music industry any more. They are all completely plastic. I will sound 90 years old now, but I yearn for the days of Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks, or even Amy Winehouse.
poppy1973 · 05/03/2021 16:21

Ellie Goulding, is a lovely person, but has a really poor voice when singing live.

MMfanalltheway · 05/03/2021 16:22

Adele is a pub singer at best.

Are you tone deaf?

Tartyflette · 05/03/2021 16:23

I think both Elton and Macca could sing back in the day, but they should have stopped several years ago and rested on their laurels.
(Although Elton did have a touch of the 'club singer' even in his heyday.)
George Michael's voice was just wonderful.

TheCrowening · 05/03/2021 16:24

I find Sam Smith to have a weird nasal thing going on but for some reason still enjoy listening to him.

Sam Smith sounds like a sad foghorn.

Of course many of the above can sing (I can’t stand warbling, “why sung one note when you can sing fourteen” type singing but Mariah et al can actually sing even if I hate it). But there definitely are “singers” who are objectively bad. Madonna and Ian Brown spring immediately to mind.

Caramelwhispers · 05/03/2021 16:24
EnglishGirlApproximately OMG That's like some drunk geezer down the pub trying to do Elton while his jaw is in spasm!

Kylie or Madonna - never got.
Ronan Keating - it's like he holds his breath while he sings. Can't quite find words to describe that nasal tone.

Has anyone seen this? Ironically, also a singer I don't rate, but even he can sing better than this cover.
Shock people were shouting at them to get off the stage! Sting's face is a picture! Grin
CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/03/2021 16:24

Adele is bloody lucky she has any voice left. As DGR said, she abused what she had and nearly lost it. What she has now is nowhere near as powerful or versatile.

But she does avoid much of the nasal foghorn stuff mainly because, I think I read somewhere, she took her soft palate exercises seriously.

But much if it is just that they don't sing properly, using their body properly. All that huffing and puffing, they just don't have the technique for longevity - see Elton John for example.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 05/03/2021 16:25

Sam Smith sounds like a sad foghorn

:o

TiersForFears1 · 05/03/2021 16:27

Paul McCartney sings like he's constipated and he's really pushing as hard as he can to get it all out. But it just ain't working.

pepperaunt · 05/03/2021 16:28

Sorry have just skimmed thread. Has anyone mentioned Lady Gaga? She was so flat singing at the inauguration (particular bugbear)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/03/2021 16:29

@DudeistPriest

WTF you don't like Bob Dylan? He's part of my religion, man.
I'm with you on Dylan. His voice is part of the whole package. Its core to his music.

That said, I've seen him a couple of times live and on one of those occasions he sounded like he was inhaling helium. Still one of my musical heroes though

DGRossetti · 05/03/2021 16:30

people were shouting at them to get off the stage!

Spinal Tap:

"We had to apologise for him with our set. People were still booing him when we went on ...."

TheCrowening · 05/03/2021 16:31

@supersonicginandtonic

Liam Gallagher 😱 another person who is fantastic live!
He’s not “fantastic” recorded so I doubt that!
Blinkyblonkyblimey · 05/03/2021 16:31

Everybody on Radio 2 is currently raving about Marisha Wallace. I genuinely don’t understand the appeal. She just seems to shout. And she wasn’t great singing live on Strictly, either. Mind you, I don’t get Bruce Springsteen either and people think he’s a god! 😂

BrilliantBetty · 05/03/2021 16:31

Every single one of the listed singers are a thousand times better than me!
And I still love a good sing song.

If any of the above were truly terrible, would they really have done as well as they have done, would anyone have invested in them in the first place? They're probably miles better than the average person at singing. Except Cheryl Cole.

Ladytron11 · 05/03/2021 16:32

I’ve been through three pages & no-one’s mentioned Chris Coldplay??

Ariana Gasper she’s known as in our house. Every breath is an audible gasp!
