Was it my fault and do I replace them?

I do all the washing.

I repeatedly tell people to empty their pockets. DD17 didn’t take her apple headphones out and obviously they went through the wash.

Waiting to see if they still work once they dry out.

Should I have double checked? And should I replace them?

I'd replace them, she seems like a good kid and took it well, no screaming or shouting or blaming you etc. If she's taken responsibility it's a nice reminder that you're on her team and can support her with a little surprise during these difficult times.

Your daughter is 17, what do you think the answer is 🤯

I sent an apple tv remote through the wash a couple of weeks ago with the sheets so hot wash. Wasn't expecting it to work but it does. So there's still hope.
Honestly I'd replace but make it clear that its not because you think its your fault.

Slightly off topic but in response to some posters

Do you really all do your own washing.

I wouldn't dream of not putting DDs clothes is the machine along with mine.

We (as a household) don't generate enough washing for individuals to do their own. I do expect my teens to know how to operate the washing machine and if (for example) they wanted a favourite top washed before tomorrow, I'd expect them to put it on themselves (with enough other clothes to make up a load).

I've been on the other side of this.

As a teenager I had a hamster. My Mum used to put her makeup bag on the side, next to it's cage.
Of course hamsters like to chew fabric for bedding.

The first time, I replaced my Mums makeup bag with a very nice one from Debenhams, as I felt bad. At least I had a Saturday job, so my wages covered it.

After warning her not to put the bag so close again a few days later, I didn't replace it next time.

When it comes to washing now I'm an adult, I'm only responsible for my own pockets. I've given fair warning.

Excellent news!

Yay! I thought they'd be fine.

QuidditchQueen · 03/03/2021 12:56

Phew! It os amazing how resilient some items are in the wash!

Not clear how you want people to vote -

YABU if you think it's my fault

YANBU if it's my DD's fault

Anyway, if that was the intention for the voting, then I'm with YANBU

I’ve washed my son’s AirPods in that scenario, and also (a different time) his AirPod case. Fortunately both worked again after they’d dried out. He’s incredibly careless and I’ve told him I won’t replace them if they get ruined because of it. I did, however, help him with the cost of replacing one AirPod when, while removing his mask, he accidentally flipped one out of his ear and it went down a drain 🤦‍♀️ - that was a genuinely unforeseeable accident as far as I’m concerned!
