Was it my fault and do I replace them?

I do all the washing.

I repeatedly tell people to empty their pockets. DD17 didn’t take her apple headphones out and obviously they went through the wash.

Waiting to see if they still work once they dry out.

Should I have double checked? And should I replace them?

Aw bless her. Not your fault at all but I would replace them if you can easily afford to.

LynetteScavo · 01/03/2021 17:12

They should work. This is always happening in our house and there's never been any fussing from the teens so either they work fine or my DC think it was their fault and don't bother saying anything.

poppycat10 · 01/03/2021 17:14

I've washed my son's and they still worked. Fear not!

MissConductUS · 01/03/2021 17:17

The wired ones are very durable and there's no battery in them to short out. They should be fine.

Love51 · 01/03/2021 17:18

My mum was (is) generally nice. However, the washing machine once got wrecked by a 2p my brother left in his pocket. In this scenario if I was the 17year old I'd be more worried about having broken the machine and incurred a call out charge. I wouldn't have expected sympathy from her, as I had risked breaking the machine.

NoSuchThingAsTooMuch · 01/03/2021 17:18

Stop doing a 17yo's washing, is the takeaway here. Its not doing anyone any favours.

Ivfplease · 01/03/2021 17:20

My DD put one in the washer. After an evening in a cup of rice it was fine the day after

HelloMrBond · 01/03/2021 17:20

This exact same thing happened to my sons headphones, twice in as many weeks I might add! Both times I put them in a cup of rice, placed on the aga overnight. They were fine both times.

gingeristhenewblack43 · 01/03/2021 17:22

@Sexnotgender if they are the headphones that come with an older iphone I'm happy to bung an unused pair in the post for your daughter.

No one's perfect, mistakes are easily made. If they were the airpods then as a parent no I wouldn't pay to replace them for my DD.

Excited101 · 01/03/2021 17:26

Mine have been through the washers they were fine!

BikeRunSki · 01/03/2021 17:26

I quite regularly wash my Apple headphones, the wired ones you get with your phone. I reckon they have about washes in them.

But at 17 - her fault.

FedNlanders · 01/03/2021 17:28

No. My 17yr old didnt hoover his room before inspection with landlord. So I done it and broke his charger with the hoover (accident)

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 01/03/2021 17:30

Let them thoroughly dry. Good chance they still work.

Symbion · 01/03/2021 17:30

I might offer her half towards, as a gesture of support/understanding, not because I'm assuming 50% of the blame. But fingers crossed it won't come to that.

Sacredspace · 01/03/2021 17:33

I’ve done exactly that! They’re fine! Must be waterproof to some extent...

CheshireCats · 01/03/2021 17:33

Several times in our house, apple wired headphones have been through the washing machine and drier and still worked. They will likely be ok x

DavidsSchitt · 01/03/2021 17:36

Meh, I'd buy her a new pair on the understanding that it was totally 100% her fault (but I love her anyway)

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 01/03/2021 17:40

It wasn’t good fault. At all. But if my DD was having a rubbish time I would (and have) replaced broken items. All depends on whether you can afford to without it affecting others in the family and what her attitude is generally.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 01/03/2021 17:41

Your fault. Not “good” fault!

Goodytoshoes · 01/03/2021 17:45

Definitely not your fault. Please don't buy her anymore as this will teach her to listen in the future! She should be thankful you're still doing her washing at the age of 17 for goodness sake lol I understand she's going through a hard time, but of you were going through a hard time and your carelessness resulted in something you loved being broke, would you expect someone else to pay for them? Of course not!! Don't be so soft, as it won't do her any favours for when she moves out and has to take responsibility for her own things.

PetesBigSausagePizza · 01/03/2021 17:47

If you had rifled through her pockets and found condoms/ drugs/ etc she'd have been embarrassed and you'd have been told off for snooping!

In this case in the trifecta of sex drugs and rock and roll she was very lucky that you only found the latter Grin

It was 100% not your fault. If you can afford to replace them I might buy them for her but I woudl point out they are a gift, not pay back.

therealteamdebbie · 01/03/2021 17:56

I know better.

I was the one doing the laundry.

I still managed to wash a couple of nappies and they make a bloody mess, I thought I was especially careful after the first time 🤷

Sometimes a tissue goes in the wash, and whoever put the laundry thought they checked all the pockets too.

I wouldn't tolerate an attitude, but I'd get her some slack.
(17 years old are more than old enough to do some of the washing though!)

therealteamdebbie · 01/03/2021 17:56

WHERE did you get that from exactly? All the OP said was that her daughter was obviously upset.

speakout · 01/03/2021 17:59

While it is the DDS responsibility I am a little more forgiving of all family members when I do a wash.
I check all pockets, often a penny or a screw that OH has missed, a five pound note in the back pocket of jeans, I am guilty myself of leaving tissues in things.
I never wash anything with pockets without checking.
