I’ve gone from a size 12/14 to an 18 since this time last year. I’ve spoken now to three friends who are the same. Have never been this large ;and also to be fair was already heavy for me - but am 5’8 so am usually slim- ish).

Firstly has anyone else done the same. Bit also - if I’ve put it on in year is it reasonable to think that with a decent diet and resuming good exercise habits I can shift it in six months?

I've put on about a stone. I hate it so much and I got the motivation to lose it at all. I feel really low. I think the connection between mental health and weight gain is definitely a thing. The only thing that's been constant and available and comforting since the pandemic is food and drink

mcclucky · 01/03/2021 00:13

If you put it on in about a year, I'd allow about a year to reverse it.

sweetkitty · 01/03/2021 00:14

Just over a stone too Sad

WutheredOut · 01/03/2021 00:19

3 stone for me... I’m utterly disgusted by myself but can’t seem to motivate my arse into gear

I’m worrying about the school run next week as I swear people will think I’m pregnant!

I have no clothes that fit that I can wear in public

Same.

Before first lockdown, and the beginning of wfh, I was a 14 and had lost weight and felt great. I am now a size 18 again. Somewhere I swore I would never get back to.

Just glad I kept all my old clobber.

I've put nearly 3 stone on in a year.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 01/03/2021 00:57

Seriously have zero motivation. I dont know where I'm going to find it from either.

CheckMate2021 · 01/03/2021 00:58

Same. First lockdown I got serious and managed to get down to pre pregnancy weight, and here we are up a stone (and probably more), really hate what I’ve done to myself Sad

StormcloakNord · 01/03/2021 00:58

If the only thing you've got to worry about is being a size 18 (the horror) then you've done pretty well in this pandemic.

MadgeMidgerson · 01/03/2021 00:59

i have discovered that when i am anxious and sad i do not eat and thus have lost at least two stone.

i look like a sadder, more tired version of myself at 18. it’s a ghastly magic and i do not recommend it

GrallaceandWomit · 01/03/2021 01:14

I had gained nearly two stone by Christmas but started dieting in the new year and have managed to lose 1 stone so far. I was not in the right frame of mind when I started dieting but promised myself to just try for 1 week then review how I felt. Seeing the first big loss in week one triggered me into sticking to the diet. Starting a diet is the hardest part!

Five67Eight · 01/03/2021 01:21

🙄

I put on about 8 kilos. I got the motivation after Christmas, and have knocked off nearly 4 since then. Actually, reading that in black and white makes me realise I’ve done reasonably well.

Just do it. Today is the day you’re going to start to lose what you’ve gained.

It’s hard going without. But you know yourself the size you feel better about yourself at - and it’s not for annoying randoms to judge the worthiness of that, since it’s entirely personal, and they can easily just scroll on by.

Time40 · 01/03/2021 01:35

In the last year, my weight has been very weirdly stable. It hasn't moved, by even one pound. It's odd because pre-pandemic, it used to vary up and down by three or four pounds. I can't account for for the peculiar stability.

Time40 · 01/03/2021 01:36

.... good luck with getting yours down again, OP. I hope you manage it.

ZaraW · 01/03/2021 04:23

I put on 7kg at the start and I usually maintain my weight without much effort. I'm also in peri menopause. I exercised a lot more and eat less. I lost 5kg and I'm happy with that.

Kinneddar · 01/03/2021 04:42

I've done the opposite. Having so many restrictions on.going out etc has got me totally focused & I've lost nearly 6 stones.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 01/03/2021 05:01

I’ve gained 20lbs going from 11 stone 4 to 12 stone 10 and feel awful health wise, I was already around a stone and a half/two stone too big for my liking pre pandemic. What has really really horrified me (and is why I can’t sleep) is that, after reading an article about about how the Pfizer vaccine was found not to work on those who were obese with a BMI over 30, I decided to check my BMI and found it’s exactly 30 Sad. I’m “only” a size 12/14 but clinically Obese.

I’m CV and at greater risk due to my race and also showing signs of developing some hereditary health conditions (diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease, I’ve had heart symptoms and joint pain).

I’ve really really struggled to just get started and I struggle to lose weight anyway (even now I’m only consuming 1400/1600 cals per day). I have actively tried WW throughout the lockdown. I’m going to try the Fast800 instead as had amazing health and weight results with this previously.

Wiredforsound · 01/03/2021 05:14

I put on a stone in first lockdown but have lost it and a bit more, mainly by being a bit more careful about what I eat but also by forcing myself to get at least 40 heart points a day and burning about 1600 calories a week (on the Google fitness app on my watch). I am mostly cycling, stationary biking, fast walking or doing an exercise video on YouTube (mostly EvaFitness - a souped up aerobics class that burns around 300 calories in half an hour) and it is really working and my clothes are now looser than they were before lockdown.

Bearsbearsbears40 · 01/03/2021 05:25

I put on a stone during lockdown 1.0, when I thought I hadn’t been doing too badly really. However, I’ve been more focused, esp since Christmas, and have lost just over a stone (including doing a bit of jogging as am wfh). I’ve found the whole pandemic weight thing so weird, it was so easy to gain and actually not that hard to lose in the end, unlike normal times where I struggle to lose weight. It’s all extremes for me! Good luck OP, you can do it!

MangoBiscuit · 01/03/2021 06:07

I've also gone from a 12/14 to a size 18. I used to be a 22, and I worked so hard to get healthier. No gym, and comfort eating, and I feel like I've ruined all my hard work. But some of these comments have made me feel a little more motivated. I've gone and found my workout program from my wonderful ex PT, from when I first started training. Really hope it's going to be easier to shift it this time.

garlictwist · 01/03/2021 06:21

I have definitely snacked a lot more in lockdown but luckily haven't put on any weight as far as I can tell (don't own any scales) because wfh means I have more time to exercise. I am really struggling to stop eating so many sweets and chocolate though.

I hope you manage to lose weight and stop being so anxious.

However, (and I say this kindly as I know how horrible anxiety can be Flowers) it isn’t helpful to share misinformation about vaccines. I’ve also read the news item you are referring to on the Guardian and it simply does not say that the pfizer vaccine “doesn’t work” on people with BMI >30. It says after a second dose they had generated less antibodies according to a (non peer reviewed) small study of health workers in Italy. They do not know who this affects efficacy. This is not the same as not working - just that perhaps more research should be done.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 01/03/2021 06:30

Lost 2 stone in the first lock down and put it all back on over winter....nothing else to do bit eat or drink at weekends.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 01/03/2021 06:39

Fine. Sorry to have offended you.

The title was

“Pfizer vaccine may be less effective in people with obesity, says study
Healthcare workers with obesity found to produce only about half the antibodies healthy people do”

I still find it frightening and personally quite significant.

Uronmute · 01/03/2021 06:44

Nope- exactly the same but has taken constant calorie counting to stop me just piling it on. Can understand the temptation to just eat when not a lot else to do.

LakieLady · 01/03/2021 06:47

I lost 10lbs in the first lockdown, which made me realise how much of my obesity was due to going to the pub (although I did get more exercise, because I did A LOT of gardening). Because of WFH, we never got back into the habit of going to the pub after work, and I lost another 4lbs.

I've lost a further 10lbs since November, but that's because I was grief-stricken (partner died suddenly) and it's not a weight loss method I'd recommend.

The other thing that has helped is that they put so much fucking palm oil into chocolate now that I don't like it any more.
