I’ve gone from a size 12/14 to an 18 since this time last year. I’ve spoken now to three friends who are the same. Have never been this large ;and also to be fair was already heavy for me - but am 5’8 so am usually slim- ish).

Firstly has anyone else done the same. Bit also - if I’ve put it on in year is it reasonable to think that with a decent diet and resuming good exercise habits I can shift it in six months?

Fine. Sorry to have offended you.

The title was

“Pfizer vaccine may be less effective in people with obesity, says study
Healthcare workers with obesity found to produce only about half the antibodies healthy people do”

I still find it frightening and personally quite significant.

But luckily for you, you have all the control in order to change this - you are literally on the cusp, so make today the day that you get out in the sun and go for a brisk walk and meal plan for the week.

I've been doing the 800 diet since Christmas and fast overnight 'til lunchtime - i've lost about a stone.

You can do it if YOU want to.

CRbear · 01/03/2021 09:47

I put on ten lbs and have got one left to lose after finding my motivation 6 weeks ago. Putting on weight is a totally understandable consequence of this situation- more time inside, less to do, boredom and stress eating etc. Hope you manage to make the changes you need to start feeling better soon! Spring will help- everything is easier with a bit of light and sunshine.

littlepeas · 01/03/2021 09:50

The scales say 1.5kg on, so not loads, but I think I have lost muscle due to far less activity (can't bear exercising alone at home), so I don't look as toned as I did pre-lockdown. It's also a significant weight gain, in that it's taken me from the top end of the healthy BMI range for my height, to slightly overweight. I've always been able to maintain my weight easily, albeit at the higher end of BMI range, so it's a bit annoying! I eat pretty healthily, but I can't restrict food - it makes me angry and depressed - so I'm just waiting for restrictions to lift before worrying about it.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/03/2021 09:57

I like a website called "smart BMI" ( sorry I can't link) which is kinder than the usual BMI calculator. It takes into account age etc, tells you where you should be for health and has some excellent tips on weight loss.

notacooldad · 01/03/2021 10:03

Its not only weight I've put on but list a serious amount if fitness.
I went for a walk yesterday and walked up a footpath with a gentle slope. I was puffing like an old steam train. In normal times I spend my days on the hills and mountains.
That was a bigger shock and more upsetting than my weight gain. I am going out on my bike this morning and doing a pilates video this afternoon.
I'm trying to stop myself doing too much too soon but I need to get fit for when work is running normally again. Great fitness is a big part of my job.

TheGoogleMum · 01/03/2021 10:10

Yep I think I'm fatter than ever... thinking of joining diet bet see if I eat better with a financial incentive!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/03/2021 10:10

I'm doing far too much boredom eating.
Today is day 1, it's 10am, and the chocolate and biscuits are calling to me. I've had fruit and yoghurt for breakfast. I'm not hungry. They just taste nice.

Graciebobcat · 01/03/2021 10:12

I've actually lost weight overall since this time last year, about half a stone. I've found it hard to lose further weight but I'm glad I haven't gained. I can totally understand why people have put weight on though.

Clearly for me some of my weight issues are caused by rushing around in the usually busy-ness of life, and with not having so much going on, I've been able to focus on looking myself more and diet and exercise. Also the fact that you are more likely to suffer worse symptoms from Covid if you are already unhealthy and overweight has been a bit of a catalyst to try and keep myself well.

I've started using an app called Nutracheck which is calorie counting (and also easy to count protein, fat etc) and is free to use for a week without giving any card details. If you are in the UK it has by far the best food database for me and is tons easier to use than WW or MFP, and a much better interface. This is just my recommendation, I have no affiliation with them. I'm giving it a go for three months.

MrDarcysMa · 01/03/2021 10:28

Yes, haven't weighed myself but about a stone at a guess.
Didn't realise how important is is to keep moving daily when gyms etc are shut. I'm guessing when I'm walking to work again etc it'll stabilise and hopefully reverse with a bit of effort.

WhereIsMyMojo · 01/03/2021 10:29

@Youngatheart00

You’re definitely not the only one! I started a similar thread last week. At least 2 stone and 2 dress sizes for me, and I was already heavier than I would like pre lockdown. I’ve managed to plateau since November though.

What’s stressing me out is that it feels mid April is going to be some kind of ‘big reveal’ when we have no reason to be able to decline social interactions (beer gardens, bbqs etc) and I just feel so ashamed.

Yes, I have this weird feeling too. Much as I want to be out again, I fear the ‘exposure’ and the shame, the bulging out of my clothes - which are so much more revealing anyway in summertime.
KindnessCrusader · 01/03/2021 10:31

I've put on 3.5 stone and gone from a 6/8 to a (tight!) 12. I quite like it but I can't afford a whole new wardrobe so I will have to lose some.

Changeychange1 · 01/03/2021 10:32

I’ve put on about a stone, but I’m still a size 6-8 as most of my clothes still fit. I’be refocused on exercise in recent weeks and it’s definitely helping.. slowly Grin

KindnessCrusader · 01/03/2021 10:33

I spent 3 and a half months in and out of hospital and all of that in bed so it's no surprise really!

Whatafabulousday · 01/03/2021 10:43

I haven't changed at all. I'm weird I suspect though.

canipressthebackbuttonplease · 01/03/2021 10:43

@pictish

Thank you, I needed to read kind words like that. I've put on 8 lbs despite doing plenty of hard exercise and tracking calories, as I did before lockdown, but comfort eating has taken its toll......

But that doesn't make me a greedy failure.

FourTeaFallOut · 01/03/2021 10:47

I've put on a lot of weight. I need to lose a stone now if not a stone and a half. Signed up to noom yesterday, so I'm definitely thinking about getting things back on track again now...any day now, at least.

Kitfish · 01/03/2021 10:48

I've put on over 3 stone. Gone from a 12/14 to an 18 in less than a year. Have been trying to shift it since December - so far have managed to lose 3lb in six weeks. How crap is that. It's very depressing and I worry I will never be able to lose it.

Maxellious · 01/03/2021 10:51

I don't want to sound like a dick, but I've actually dropped half a stone (10 stone to 9.5 stone, so wasn't looking to loose any particularly) because without a commute i have time to go for a 5mile walk every day.

It's what I enjoy doing, so hasn't been a hardship particularly, but I'm only writing this to perhaps help those who don't like strict diets or intense exercise. If you are prepared for slow results, then you can loose weight just by upping your exercise. I am genuinely surprised at the effect it has had on my body: better muscle tone (but no where near toned!), better posture and I don't feel stiff in the morning anymore.

Myfuckingfreezer · 01/03/2021 10:53

You can absolutely shift it in 6 months.

I'm 5,7" and went from a size 20 to a size 14 in the first 6 months of 2020 over lockdown one. Lost 4 stone.

The sooner you start the better you will feel as restrictions ease.

ChronicallyCurious · 01/03/2021 10:58

I did fine until the second lockdown in November where I think I just felt fuck it and gave up. It was too cold to be going for walks and it made me miserable. Plus that paired with Christmas, I weighed myself in the January and I put on a stone. Finally managed to lose it (lost the final part on weigh in yesterday) but found it a lot harder than dieting in usual times.

notacooldad · 01/03/2021 11:00

@pictish
That was a lovely post and I guess a lot of people need to hear it.
Its been a very difficult year for so many people. Homeschooling and trying to work from home is so stressful. I've seen this with my colleagues and friends.
With so little to do for entertainment and so many restrictions in place it is easy to use food and drink as a source of enjoyment and then have limited ways to burn it off. It is also easy to get into a negative mindset that us not easy to snap out of.
On top of that the weather and the dark nights haven't helped moods.
The nights are getting lighter, let's hope our spirit lifts!!!

vickylou78 · 01/03/2021 11:04

I'm same put on about 2 stone. Was a 12 now about a 16. Nothing fits feel awful. Just comfort eating and take aways as felt no other ways to relax or have a treat. Homeschool and wfh stress and tiredness is what caused it for me. Plus lack of usual family and social support.
Plan to start slimming world when kids go back to school and can get into a routine. Fingers crossed!!

Graciebobcat · 01/03/2021 11:07

If only! That worked once when I was a teenager, ever since then I've had to reduce my food to lose weight.

skeenskeenjellybean · 01/03/2021 11:10

@pictish What a thoughtful post. Thank you for that x

Emeraldshamrock · 01/03/2021 11:13

I'm the opposite I was healthy eating on the first lockdown with some binges.
I've completely lost my appetite on this one.
I usually put on a stone each winter didn't this year I'll have to take it easy in Spring.
Usual years I drop the stone fairly quick I love walking in Spring.
Stress kills my appetite.
