I’ve gone from a size 12/14 to an 18 since this time last year. I’ve spoken now to three friends who are the same. Have never been this large ;and also to be fair was already heavy for me - but am 5’8 so am usually slim- ish).

Firstly has anyone else done the same. Bit also - if I’ve put it on in year is it reasonable to think that with a decent diet and resuming good exercise habits I can shift it in six months?

@pictish that is a lovely message you just wrote there thank you Flowers

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 01/03/2021 09:04

I've done a bit better weightwise during lockdown, but I think it is to do with the fact that WFH gives me a lot more routine than I had before (unpredictable hours, high-stress job, very long days) and also removes a lot of the food temptations that I had (fast food in service stations, big lunches with colleagues, cafes full of very sugary food). At the moment I am only snacking on fruit and veg, only eating a pudding once a week and literally buying no more fresh food than we will eat in the week - the fridge is virtually empty every Friday. I'm going to keep up with this when things return to normal although I anticipate that it will be harder.

candycane222 · 01/03/2021 09:05

Sorry, phrased that clumsily, I know some have more to shift than I do.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 01/03/2021 09:06

But I was seriously obese and a lot of it was specifically around worries re additional risks of Covid 19. I don't think I am in any way typical - most of my neighbours have said that they've put on weight over lockdown.

Whataroyalannoyance · 01/03/2021 09:07

Put on 2 stone, I needy gym payments to motivate me again

PurpleFlower1983 · 01/03/2021 09:08

I have but I’ve been doing slimming world since 2nd January and have lost 11lbs which considering I’m 18.5 weeks pregnant is pretty good I think. You’ll get it off in 6 months easily.

Youngatheart00 · 01/03/2021 09:10

You’re definitely not the only one! I started a similar thread last week. At least 2 stone and 2 dress sizes for me, and I was already heavier than I would like pre lockdown. I’ve managed to plateau since November though.

What’s stressing me out is that it feels mid April is going to be some kind of ‘big reveal’ when we have no reason to be able to decline social interactions (beer gardens, bbqs etc) and I just feel so ashamed.

sunnydaleslayer · 01/03/2021 09:13

I put on a bit last March/April but lost it again in the summer.

On SW now and lost 10lb but seem to be stuck now. I need gyms to reopen so I can get back on it (3 or 4 times a week pre-covid). I'd like to lose another 1.5 stone and tone up.

Whineandwine · 01/03/2021 09:17

@MadgeMidgerson I agree. I initially put on weight in lockdown - not ideal but at the end of the day not terrible. We then had two family bereavements (one Covid one not) and a whole load of other stress - that twinned with general Covid stress meant my weight dropped off. I would much prefer to have kept putting on weight than to have been so stressed I couldn’t eat. To be clear I’m not dismissing anyone else’s experiences and I know for some people weight gain is also a symptom of having a really tough time. Covid has taught me that for me weight gain = moderately shit time and weight loss = even shitter time. I’d always assumed I was a stress eater until this last year when I learnt what I do when more stressed than I’ve ever been.

cherrybunx0 · 01/03/2021 09:17

I haven't gained but I've not managed to shift any either.

My problem is actually my partner - I go shopping and buy healthy things, he comes home on a friday with bags full of 'treats for the weekend' that actually last all week because there is so many. He is also terrible for bringing home takeaways randomly during the week. Not complaining lol but considering I have 0 willpower it is easier for me to not have unhealthy foods around!

You can get there OP. My motivation now is how do I want to look in the summer, when we can (hopefully) get back to a more normal.

Youngatheart00 · 01/03/2021 09:18

OP just thinking again rather than leaving my prior post on a negative note!

I’m using the fact it’s now March to motivate me. I have a whole month (and more! But one step at a time) to improve my health and the way I feel about myself.

No, I won’t lose all the weight but at least I’ll be on the right trajectory and feel better about myself and my own health and body image.

But honestly, if I saw a friend or family member had put on weight in the last year, I wouldn’t judge them (privately it almost makes them MORE relatable to me but that’s due to my own position). We are much more unkind to ourselves than anyone else would be to us!

PattyPan · 01/03/2021 09:19

I’ve put on about a stone since the first lockdown and I think it’s primarily due to lack of exercise. I HATE running, which is why I normally swim and go to the gym which have obviously both been closed, plus I normally get 10k steps from my commute and now wfh I barely get 2k during the day as work has just expanded to fill the time.

Whineandwine · 01/03/2021 09:21

@Kenworthington FlowersFlowers it’s a terrible way to loose weight isn’t it!

MrBullinaChinaShop · 01/03/2021 09:22

Yes, I have put on 1.5 stone. With working 12 hour days, no annual leave since March, home schooling etc we’re relying on convenience foods and I don’t have time to exercise.
I’m now more at risk from Covid than I was before lockdown, based on my BMI.
And in response to a PP, it’s not the only thing I have to worry about. I’ve lost a relative to Covid, and a relative to a condition that wasn’t diagnosed in time to be treated as she couldn’t get seen face to face. I’ve lost 20% of my income. I am still bothered about my weight though, as you can be bothered about more than one thing at a time,

DianeCherry · 01/03/2021 09:24

@LakieLady

I lost 10lbs in the first lockdown, which made me realise how much of my obesity was due to going to the pub (although I did get more exercise, because I did A LOT of gardening). Because of WFH, we never got back into the habit of going to the pub after work, and I lost another 4lbs.

I've lost a further 10lbs since November, but that's because I was grief-stricken (partner died suddenly) and it's not a weight loss method I'd recommend.

The other thing that has helped is that they put so much fucking palm oil into chocolate now that I don't like it any more.

I'm sorry for your loss @LakieLady
LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 01/03/2021 09:25

Same here and was really disgusted with myself, then I worked out that my weight gain was due to over eating by about 100 cals a day which isn't disgusting just easily done, especially during a pandemic. F
Go easy on yourself, you will lose it once we get back into a routine.

DianeCherry · 01/03/2021 09:27

I put on 20lbs and have lost 9.6 of them since the beginning of Jan. I'd never been so heavy and I felt terrible. I'd hate to go back to the office looking like this so I have to get rid of it.

harknesswitch · 01/03/2021 09:29

I've put on the stone I lost in 2019. I put a lot of it down to lack of exercise, not that I did a lot before, but I've noticed that during the week I now struggle to walk over 3500 steps in a day, whereas if I was in the office I'd do over 8000 without blinking and eye. I've now started to try and walk at least 20mins during lunchtime.

Cherry889 · 01/03/2021 09:31

I have been ill with gallstones throughout most of the lockdowns so I have lost 3 stone as limited what I can eat without having pain.

whatswithtodaytoday · 01/03/2021 09:32

Yes I've put on about 15 pounds and am the heaviest I've ever been - gone from an 18 to a 20 with BMI over 35. I've been a 20 before and swore I'd never get back here (was planning to lose the baby weight in 2020).

My son's just gone back to nursery today after a VERY long two months out due to frequent outbreaks, and I am determined to lose some weight asap. My goal is to lose a stone in March - I figure the extra weight is mostly due to chocolate and lack of exercise, so if I sort that out and just eat mindfully I should lose quite quickly. Then over the course of this year I intend to get my BMI back down to below 30. I'm comfortable at a size 16 and I have a wardrobe full of lovely pre-pregnancy clothes, so that's my motivation.

wizzbangfizz · 01/03/2021 09:38

This is the thread for me - 2 stone and depressed with it, cannot seem to stop eating shit

Yorkshireteaalwayswins · 01/03/2021 09:39

I weighed myself this morning and i have gained over 2 stone since my wedding in September. I am horrified. As various stages of lockdown happened pretty much straight away, we couldn't go anywhere and that included our honeymoon. I think i combined lockdown blues and post-wedding anti-climax and just ate to occupy myself. None of my clothes fit and i genuinely feel gross so this is my new start! I have batch cooked lentil soup for my lunches this week and am pledging to walk 50 miles in March. I hope my motivation sticks around!

AradiaGC · 01/03/2021 09:41

I've put on about 2 stone and gone from size 10 to 14. Pre-covid I used to walk everywhere and go to the gym four times a week. I also overeat when I'm stressed or unhappy, and there's been a lot of that. It's depressing, especially as I'm now living in my baggiest, stretchiest clothes as I don't want to have to buy more in bigger sizes. Hoping I'll lose enough to fit into a 12 (which I have plenty of) before normal life resumes!

Floobydo · 01/03/2021 09:45

I gained at least a stone in lockdown 1 - combination of comfort eating, being less active and drinking a lot more.

Lost it and more over the summer. The January lockdown hit hard and I have felt a lot less motivated but managed to keep to a healthy weight... now it’s spring and the sun is shining it’s so much easier and I’m feeling renewed motivation.

I think a trap can be wanting immediate weight loss. If it’s taken a year to go on, it will probably also take a year to lose, but that’s ok. If you find yourself frustrated with your progress it’s always worth thinking ‘but if when I started I could have been here, I would have been really happy with that... so keep going!’

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 01/03/2021 09:46

I gained 18lbs first lockdown, lost 20 over the summer on fast 800, slowly put a couple on in the autumn, then gained 12 over Dec/January. I know it’s been stress eating from homeschooling.

Restarted fast 800 again. Need to loose about 4 stone.
