the nicest chocolates ever?
I’ve had Hotel Chocolat, Chococo, Lily O Brian’s, Booja Booja, Green and Black’s, Prestat etc... for Mother’s Day in the past and really don’t like many of the flavours.
Am I just common as muck or does anyone else feel the same?

Has anyone tried Tony's Chocolonely? It's bars rather than boxes of chocolates though. It's really good and supposed to be super ethically produced. Pretty pricey for bars of chocolate though!

GloGirl · 28/02/2021 17:07

YABU they are completely inedible now!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 28/02/2021 17:51

I've tried Tony's chocolony I thought it was just ok, not worth the money really

iamyourequal · 28/02/2021 18:23

Thornton’s are cheap and nasty now. Such a shame as they were lovely 30 years ago but have downgraded the ingredients. They are now dry, waxy, bland and over-sweet.

I'm surprised at the Hotel Chocolat love on here. I fear HC is going the way of Thorntons..
I worry a bit about this too. I used to subscribe to them back when they were the Chocolate Tasting Club and they were better then. Hand coated in chocolate and lots of proper boozy ones. Now they are all factory moulded and I am not fond of the ones with cinnamon or bits of meringue in or ‘summer’ themed.
My favorite chocolates are the old fashioned Fortnum & Mason in the turquoise trays.

DaiquirisinDorset · 28/02/2021 18:23

I absolutely agree that Hotel Chocolate is low quality as well. Their chocolate looks good, they have excellent design campaigns and are marketing pros, but the chocolate itself - although better that Thorntons - is pretty rubbish and very sickly.

crystalcherry87 · 28/02/2021 19:00

They're nice but not the best. The best are Guylian sea shells.

nursejekyll · 28/02/2021 19:01

I tried Tony Chocolony and thought it was too thick to bite into!
Love Cocoa chocolate bars are lovely. Toblerone is still nice chocolate.

Sickly! Yes, that's the word I was looking for earlier.

They look very beautiful but honestly I find they have little flavour, just lots of sugar.

Agree with a previous poster about Guylian seashells - they are amazing. I also tried some Leonidas chocolates last year and as I recall they were excellent. There are a couple of European chains called Maison Georges Larnicol and Jeff de Bruges which I always visit when in Paris.

Yes! They have got a great marketing team obviously but that’s as far as it goes! I hated the taste of the bar I had. Horrible and cheap.

YABVU. Horrid chocolate.

Rinoachicken · 28/02/2021 19:24

They used to do a 7 deadly sins range that was AMAZING. Then they discontinued it so do t buy Thornton’s anymore as not fussed about any of their other stuff

mrsbyers · 28/02/2021 21:20

They are awful nowadays , very low quality and quantity of cocoa and too much fat to compensate - if I am gifted them they go to food bank or are regifted

Cheeserton · 28/02/2021 21:21

What's a Vietnamese Shuffle?? 🤔

SchmooobyDoo · 28/02/2021 21:26

I’d love a big box of Thornton’s Continental from 20 years ago...

Paul A Young is fabulous chocolate.
Hotel Chocolat is okay, I’d enjoy it...

Oly4 · 28/02/2021 21:29

I love the Thornton’s bags.. I still love Vieneese truffle, diplomats and alpinis!

WhereverIlaymyhat2021 · 28/02/2021 21:31

Agree with @Disfordarkchocolate why, why, so sad 😭😭😭

DaiquirisinDorset · 28/02/2021 21:44

My all-time favourite 'mainstream' chocolate is Fry's Chocolate Cream, which seems to taste the same as it always has. Or the peppermint one.

Erictheavocado · 28/02/2021 22:02

When I first tried Thorntons, way back in the mid 1980's, they really were something special. Then they began to sell through supermarkets, rather than just in their own stores, and the quality definitely went down. Nowadays, I regard them to be the equivalent of how Milk Tray used to be - a reasonable everyday chocolate for someone who prefers quantity over quality. I prefer Hotel Chocolate, but my favourite is Lindt, especially the 85% bar.

FuckyouCovid21 · 28/02/2021 22:06

Palm oil has killed all my old favourite chocolate, now it's waxy, greasy shite

LadyPoison · 01/03/2021 11:08

Palm oil has sneaked into Lindt now too Sad

likeamillpond · 01/03/2021 11:18

Ive never like Thorntons.

I bought Milk Tray for the first time in years and was disappointed there were no soft centres. I used to love the strawberry and orange soft centres, but now they are solid and messed about with.
Also Turkish delight is no more and is replaced with cruddy salted caramel.
Ive just remembere there was no soft toffee one come to think of it.

It it ain't broke don't fix it!

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 01/03/2021 11:58

@likeamillpond

Even worse no lime barrell.

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 02/03/2021 01:44

Bloody love a Thorntons chocolate. Viennese truffles are the best. However after a whole big bagful they can make you feel a bit queasy 🤢

GreenSlide · 02/03/2021 02:40

The alpinis are nice. Lily O'Briens are my favourites. Has anyone said about Tony's Chocolonely yet? I bought it after reading users rave about it on here and was like Confused don't see the fascination at all.

GreenSlide · 02/03/2021 02:42

A new Tik Tok dance. All the cool kids are doing it.
