the nicest chocolates ever?
I’ve had Hotel Chocolat, Chococo, Lily O Brian’s, Booja Booja, Green and Black’s, Prestat etc... for Mother’s Day in the past and really don’t like many of the flavours.
Am I just common as muck or does anyone else feel the same?

They got rid of apricot parfaits Sad

Thewinterofdiscontent · 28/02/2021 08:11

Monetezumas chocolate is noticeably better.
We have both Hotel Chocolate and Monetzumas shops in our town and there’s no comparison.

I only eat these sort of chocolates if I’m given them as gifts though so maybe twice a year? Not enough to be able to miss Thornton’s or whatever. Otherwise it’s a bit of chocolate if I’m cooking with it or the odd double decker bar.
Who buys the box sets on a regular basis?

tiredmum2468 · 28/02/2021 08:29

I love the fact there's a big chocolate factory in Alfreton and incidentally that's where the slimming world head office is! I know that as my friend was a consultant she went for an interview there I drove her!

NellePorter · 28/02/2021 08:38

@Thewinterofdiscontent I would say I get given a box twice a year at most, I wouldn't buy them for myself. I buy Montezuma for my husband, I didn't know they had actual shops!

Thewinterofdiscontent · 28/02/2021 08:52

@NellePorter yes but some on here know all the names of the chocolates which means you have to have the same box a bit more than sporadically.
Maybe it’s just me. I like nougat ones best regardless of name and don’t like marzipan. Other than that most mixed boxes have a generic orange, a runny toffee, a solid toffee, a truffle or two etc etc. I can’t get excited about them really.

Littlecaf · 28/02/2021 08:53

A other vote here for Montezumas.

I like Thornton’s. I wouldnt buy them as a special occasion though.

capercaillie · 28/02/2021 08:59

Montezuma chocolate is great.
Also this place Secret Truffletier

Hailtomyteeth · 28/02/2021 09:02

They are rubbish now. Not worth buying, definitely not worth eating. They used to be great.

StanfordPines · 28/02/2021 09:14

Back in 2000 they had their first shop in Brighton. The guy who owned it used to come into the department store where I worked and I’d sell him bits of his magimix that he would use to make the chocolates. Whenever you went in the shop there were always free samples to be had.

LadyPoison · 28/02/2021 09:29

Sadly not anymore. Far too sweet and don’t taste of much other than low quality chocolate.

They’ve ruined the brand. I wa given a box for Christmas which I donated to the local food pantry.

Anne1958 · 28/02/2021 12:39

I don’t like Thornton’s just as I no longer like Cadbury chocolate.

I now stick to Sprungli or Laderache.

FuzzyPuffling · 28/02/2021 12:51

Anyone who's got any Thornton's they don't want can always send them to me😁

TaraR2020 · 28/02/2021 14:28

Its not just me who's noticed the shortage of vienneise truffles then? Can't find them anywhere atm!

CounsellorTroi · 28/02/2021 14:40

@EwwSprouts

They used to be good but then all the centres became flavoured goo.
I misread goo as something else!
RJnomore1 · 28/02/2021 14:41

They used to be a real treat.

Last time I had any a couple of years ago they managed to be brick hard, waxy, dusty and cloyingly sweet all in one go. Vile.

Calibrachoa · 28/02/2021 14:41

I'm not sure if it's the same thing but I liked their big Christmas selection. Tesco reduced them from £10 to £5 and they were nice

Calibrachoa · 28/02/2021 14:44

I want to try Alpini. I love praline and I like the word Alpini

iklboo · 28/02/2021 14:53

The Manchester Tart ones are to die for.

MsMiaWallace · 28/02/2021 14:54

When I was a kid in the 90s Thornton's were the 'posh' chocolates. They were gorgeous! They're now bloody awful.
They belong in the bin with Cadbury's & Quality Street.

Hotel Chocolat any day for me. Game changer chocolate.

Beautiful3 · 28/02/2021 15:09

I think they're vile, they're too sweet. Alot of chocolate brands have changed their chocolates over the years, Cadburys, thorntons and Terry's have made them sweeter. The only chocolate I like now are by Nestle.

MrsBobDylan · 28/02/2021 15:43

Used to love them, especially the Viennese truffles. My dh (who is a wonderful man) buys me very expensive chocolates for birthdays, Xmas and Mother's Day. I have noticed that as I've aged, my tastes are getting ever more expensive.

BerylCook · 28/02/2021 16:30

Do you think our tastes change though?
Maybe they have always been really sweet & we loved that when we were young. Now that we’re older, not so much ? (sherbet dip anyone? Pure sugar!)
I still like them for some reason but I agree, they are very sweet!

I have noticed that as I've aged, my tastes are getting ever more expensive I agree this is the case with a lot of things definitely!

I'm surprised at the Hotel Chocolat love on here. I fear HC is going the way of Thorntons. I used to love them but now if I ever have a box they tend to get left half uneaten and eventually thrown out. They're not bad, they just seem to have lost a lot of the flavour and appear to try and make up for it by making every other chocolate heavily alcoholic. Or flavoured with salted caramel (fine, but not if that's all there is!).

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/02/2021 16:40

I think Hotel Chocolat is going downhill a bit too. Paul A Young does a fine box of chocolates.
