AIBU to think that Prince Harry is coming across as the most tone deaf and hypocritical member of the RF right now?

Yes the guy lost his mother in a tragic way at a young age. (So have many) Yes he was forced out into the public eye in the middle of grief (which was horrific at the time and worse on reflection) BUT he is now an adult man with a family and access to life of extreme privilege yet he cannot seem to realise that him publically complaining about his lot in life and telling the rest of us how to behave is distasteful. Also, the petulant way he seems to communicate with the media is just undelining his immaturity and lack of awareness. By which I mean, the potshots in statements and rapping with James Corden and his pathetic man of the people schtick. If you want to be Hazzer give up your title and STFU!

It wasn’t a state funeral, it was a royal ceremonial funeral

Whatever funeral she did have was a direct result of public pressure, as were the public RF appearances. The RF thought Balmoral was the best place for the boys. Yet, after public outrage, and a week of people on TV saying they were all horrible and heartless, the family flew to London to openly display their respects.

Roussette · 28/02/2021 13:47

Must be true then if you read it. Wasn't those pesky tabloids was it?

What.. the ones you read lol
You appear to have missed what I put underneath
'It is just as much speculation to say they 'elected to do so' as being pressured to do so'

Once the Duke and the Queen are both no longer around, I think that public support will wane hugely. They have glued it altogether.

Isn’t public support for the royal family waning anyway?
TorringtonDean · 28/02/2021 13:51

Support for the Royals has waxed and waned over the years. They have normally fixed it by letting the public see a bit more of them.

the80sweregreat · 28/02/2021 13:52

Support might be waning already I guess.? Not sure really to be honest.
Most people I know rarely mention them.

Sparklingbrook · 28/02/2021 13:59

I have to say that I have never discussed the Royal Family in RL except maybe when there's a wedding and even then it's more about the dress or the guest list.
I have no idea what DH thinks of them and he would be Confused if I asked.
MN seems to be the place to get it off your chest these days. Grin There's a Royal Family topic but nobody uses it because when you want to get people going it has to be AIBU. Grin

Neither William nor Harry should’ve had to walk behind the coffin. Protocol should have gone out the window that day. Harry was a little boy grieving for his mother but the “stiff upper lip” bollocks was more important. How anyone can look at that footage, even now, and think it was ok is beyond me.
I agree with that. However it was just one day in a lifetime of gut wrenching grief for both of them. I feel enormous sympathy for them.

the80sweregreat · 28/02/2021 14:25

I have one friend who talks about Harry and Meghan now and again , but she is mixed heritage herself and had high hopes that Meghan would be a force for good and raise awareness of issues surrounding being bi racial in the UK. She supports their decisions , but a bit disappointed they chose not to stay here as she felt they could have done so much more.
I imagine a few people feel a bit like this.

Awalkintime · 28/02/2021 14:25

@CallmeAngelina

Harry was actually protected by the British press in many ways. There is (allegedly) much about him that was suppressed during his younger years.
He was protected with a media blackout when he was serving.
DoreenWinkings · 28/02/2021 14:35

@CallmeAngelina

"Well maybe he has grown tired of being suppressed then?"

I presume you've decided to deliberately misinterpret my meaning there? Harry (and almost certainly William too) led, by all accounts, quite a lifestyle in his teens and 20s - that would have made sensational headlines if published.

But a large proportion of people do dumb shit in their teens and early 20's. I certainly did. Do you really think it's fair to suggest that the dumb/horrid stuff they did when they were young shouldn't have been suppressed? You only have to look at almost every celebrity who was famous as a child/teen and whose 'antics' weren't suppressed to see how that pans out. And they 'chose' their celebrity (though how much choice someone that young actually has is debatable). W&H were literally only famous because of their family. Of course their dumb shit wasn't published - that would have been spectacularly unfair for them.
the80sweregreat · 28/02/2021 14:56

I couldn't get over the fact that Harry's advisors and the courtiers actually let him go to that fancy dress party dressed up as a Nazi!
I said , at the time, why was it allowed? Why didn't they say ' not a good idea really , bound to get into the papers' or whatever.
He was so silly but they were even more stupid to let him out of his bedroom !

BonnieDundee · 28/02/2021 15:02

Pps are correct about the vaccine not being a political issue. That was a wrong choice of word by me. I still dont agree that it is the Queens place to lecture us on our responsibilities. I accept that others will think this is okay

Sparklingbrook · 28/02/2021 15:05

I didn't see what the Queen said about the vaccine as a 'lecture' really. But what she said made sense to me, and hopefully others, that's the main thing.

I think celebrities speaking about how important it probably has more clout than royalty though.

CallmeAngelina · 28/02/2021 15:30

@DoreenWinkings, I think you've missed my point. A poster said that they had been hounded by the press ever since their mother died. I was pointing out that, actually, the press eased up on publishing what they might ordinarily have done - which is a good thing.

Lookingforwardto2021 · 28/02/2021 15:45

I think it is good for the queen to encourage getting the vaccine. And any celebrity as well

Similarly, I think it is good that H&M asked people to go out and vote. And any celebrity as well.

What I think is hypocritical is the criticism that H&M got. Nothing political in either message, both public service announcements

TorringtonDean · 28/02/2021 15:59

I think the Queen telling people in the U.K. that she has had the jab and feels fine is great leadership. A Prince telling US citizens to go and vote is interfering in another country’s business.

Lookingforwardto2021 · 28/02/2021 16:00

Is his wife who is a is a US citizen doing it ok then?

TorringtonDean · 28/02/2021 16:03

Yes, his wife can do what she wants in the US. But wasn’t she using his position to get the message out? Otherwise why not do it alone?

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 28/02/2021 16:04

@Lookingforwardto2021

Nothing is ok. Some people will find wrong and twist the right way and the wrong way until he's dead. And even then some would complain because he did it on purpose to make it all about him, overshadow a baby announcement or engagement or fuck knows what else. Oh and he was always thick, and the fact that he's dead just proves that.
userxx · 28/02/2021 16:12

He's just a bit of a twat these days isn't he. Shame really as he was my favourite royal.

He was a lot of people's 'favorite Royal. ' I think this is why some can't believe his chucked it in to live abroad I think. His brother and wife will have to do more now too , so they are probably fed up about it as well!
Sparklingbrook · 28/02/2021 16:38

I didn't know I had to have a 'favourite' royal. Grin but Harry's mine this week as he made me laugh with JC.

I think Zara's fun, but someone will no doubt be along to tell me I am very wrong about that.

CathyorClaire · 28/02/2021 17:09

Ofc.

Nothing fun if you happen to be on the same road she's eating up at 90+ mph.

And surely nothing so hilarious as your lawyer denying you're on a six figure salary from a Chinese tycoon for a back-breaking six gigs a year.

Brilliant. Not fun. Thought as much. Lots to hold against her. Back to Harry it is then.
