We nearly lost the word mother and all that comes with it?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4176497-History-in-the-making-Watch-Parliament-Live-at-2-30pm

The maternity bill wanted to remove the word mother/woman and replace it with pregnant person.
Those words are important and women have fought for a century to be recognised yet we were nearly wiped out in favour of belief not fact.

I wont say "I am not transphobic" like some sort of plea! I dont actually have to I am just fighting for womens rights no need for me to explain myself any further.

This Ministerial Maternity Bill with the amendments from HoL has gone back to the comments for debate this evening. There are several speakers.

merrymouse · 01/03/2021 13:33

I don't think it's applicable in this case, because this is literally a 'maternity' bill, but if people are genuinely worried about abortion rights, an alternative to 'mother' would be 'pregnant woman'.

If some people don't like that, they need to explain why they find sex specific language unacceptable, particularly when that language relates to rights that are only needed by one sex.

The point of the GRA was to protect the human right to privacy. The legislation does not recognise that anyone can change biological sex, and no bill has ever been passed to say that the government should record the identity, as opposed to the sex of all citizens.

I agree that sometimes sex is referenced when it is irrelevant, but we need to ask why mention of sex should be avoided when it is.

Will it be live, Ereshkigalang? I've got bloody zooms all night ... I didn't realise it would go back to the HoC - tense!

ArabellaScott · 01/03/2021 13:42

If it is, will someone make another thread? This one is nearly full ...

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/03/2021 13:42

I think it will be live but not sure.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/03/2021 13:43

There is already an FWR thread. I'm sure if it is live it will be updated live. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4179973-MOMA-Bill-back-in-the-Commons-today-Monday-1st-March-5-15pm

@Ninkanink thank you

@merrymouse if you watch the debate "mother" is something of a compromise anyway as those seeking to further a certain type of trans ideology object to "woman" being used in pretty much any context! I shit you not!

It's a bloody disgrace the way things are going.

Women are being dismissed, oppressed and erased by this ideology and hardly anyone in authority is standing up for us. Every major political party has "drank the koolaid" and are losing the support of many women - and they don't care!

Myself and others are trying to get them to care by writing/emailing them and telling them how we feel but we are mostly being dismissed as transphobic.

Several of the lords speaking on this debate spoke of the many letters and emails they had received from gender critical women and women generally concerned about the language being debated.

A very very few others in the public eye "get it" and are brave enough to speak up - not easy especially for women in the public eye who are literally putting their personal safety at risk if they do so, it was mentioned in the debate of a particular uni lecturer who now basically has a protection detail necessary because of the valid threats she has received.

Yet these ideologists class misgendering as "literal violence" but defend those who threaten women with ACTUAL violence

That is what this issue is leading to, women literally under physical threat

RedDogsBeg · 01/03/2021 13:59

Excellent posts @Graphista.

You are so spot on in all you say.

Tiari · 01/03/2021 14:12

I genuinely can't understand why the delusions from this particular mental illness (gender dysphoria) is being pandered to?
Why not pander to other mental illnesses which cause delusional thoughts/behaviours?
I can't think of ANY other mental illness where not only are we expected to go along with delusion but give up our rights.
I just don't get it Confused

Thankyou for this thread OP Flowers

@AnnaPotter

Woolly truisms like ‘language has meaning’ are pointless. What actual harm do you envisage? In the mumsnet echo chamber you might find a hundred people willing to say ‘you’re so right’ and save you the effort of actually thinking, but I want to know exactly what damage would be done to you by legislation using the term ‘pregnant person’ rather than ‘mother’?
If language is so unimportant why the push to change it to suit such a small percentage of the population. If you're trans it seems language is very important but not important at all if you're a woman?

Same with Sports, women should stop making such a big deal, it's only sport........but when it comes to transwomen playing sport suddenly it a human right violation for them not to be able to compete with Biological women

RedDogsBeg · 01/03/2021 14:47

The simple truth is that TRA's decree that language and sport has no meaning for us females.

AryaStarkWolf · 01/03/2021 15:13

@RedDogsBeg

The simple truth is that TRA's decree that language and sport has no meaning for us females.
Well yeah exactly, it meaningless for us but the most important thing in the world for them? What sort of double standards is that?

I'm a woman and I'm saying language and Sport are important to me.

RedDogsBeg · 01/03/2021 15:27

What sort of double standards is that? and they are relentless in applying them, how all those who describe themselves as allies can't see it beggars belief.

AryaStarkWolf · 01/03/2021 15:31

Exactly, it's either an important issue or it isn't, it can't be important for one "side" but then poo poo'd as a minor issue when the other side complain. It's double think at it's finest.

Google Parliament live tv. Should be available.
ArabellaScott · 01/03/2021 15:57

All eyes on the house, then.

Let's see what the govt think of mothers.

ArabellaScott · 01/03/2021 18:04
  • newsflash - they upheld the amendment.

We are all still okay to be 'mothers', everyone

ArabellaScott · 01/03/2021 18:05

the change to 'breedersnet has been postponed.

LastRoloIsMine · 01/03/2021 18:19

*We are all still okay to be 'mothers', everyone

It should never have been up for debate!

They are happy to opress us because of our reproductive capacity but we are not allowed to name it. People are not oppressed because we give birth mothers are.
