We nearly lost the word mother and all that comes with it?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4176497-History-in-the-making-Watch-Parliament-Live-at-2-30pm

The maternity bill wanted to remove the word mother/woman and replace it with pregnant person.
Those words are important and women have fought for a century to be recognised yet we were nearly wiped out in favour of belief not fact.

I wont say "I am not transphobic" like some sort of plea! I dont actually have to I am just fighting for womens rights no need for me to explain myself any further.

The intention of this is to decouple the word woman from our female biology and specific health issues

Of course it is. Once you do that any man/male can be a woman. Thats the goal.

Yes. But the attempt has failed. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, and a certain sector are very, very, cross about it.
Cailleachian · 27/02/2021 17:16

Oh..its in the dictionary....I see.

So a woman is a man who is female?

Gonna go down a storm in the abortion clinic when you refer to your clients as "expectant mothers

Unlikely they would do that. As they would be mother's if they continued the pregnancy. There's nothing expectant about a birth if a woman or girl is having a termination.

Walkaround · 27/02/2021 17:16

You wouldn’t seek the help of an abortion clinic unless you were an expectant mother. Whether your brain likes it or not, your body is making a mother out of you. Besides, describing you as a parent wouldn’t make you feel any better about it while seeking your abortion.

Cailleachian

What is it you are trying to achieve?

Attention?
Erkrie · 27/02/2021 17:19

That of course is true.

LastRoloIsMine · 27/02/2021 17:21

Cailleachian

Cailleachian

What is it you are trying to achieve?

Named for the debate tactic created by creationist shill Duane Gish, a Gish Gallop involves spewing so much bullshit in such a short span on that your opponent can’t address let alone counter all of it.To make matters worse a Gish Gallop will often have one or more 'talking points' that has a tiny core of truth to it, making the person rebutting it spend even more time debunking it in order to explain that, yes, it's not totally false but the Galloper is distorting/misusing/misstating the actual situation.

If the thread gets so bogged down with ridiculous arguments lurkers lose interest, people can't e bthered to engage and the debate turns into a stupid argument.

Cailleachian · 27/02/2021 17:23

No it was MW not the OED, but it would seem that they both agree that a man is a person of either sex.

RedDogsBeg · 27/02/2021 17:24

Cailleachina I can google too and this is what I got when I put in Man:

1 : an adult male human being

and that is the recognised dictionary definition, scientific definition, biological definition - need I go on?

Why are you making yourself look so foolish?

Erkrie · 27/02/2021 17:28

Not heard that one before. But very apt.

LastRoloIsMine · 27/02/2021 17:30

Yes it does...in old English if you had bothered to read any further. Back in the day when women were so unimportant we didn't even have a word.
We have a word and it is recognised and we are not about to give it up.

HermitsLife · 27/02/2021 17:36

@Erkrie all they do is knock over all the pieces, shit on the board and then fly back to their flock. Tedious Hmm

The real question you have to ask yourself is why a person would be so desperate to argue the point that certain members of society don't deserve a word to define themselves and what that person has to gain from that?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/02/2021 17:38

Again... Supreme court, House of Lords.

Erkrie · 27/02/2021 17:42

The real question you have to ask yourself is why a person would be so desperate to argue the point that certain members of society don't deserve a word to define themselves and what that person has to gain from that?

I think we all know the answer to that.

LastRoloIsMine · 27/02/2021 17:45

I think we all know the answer to that.

I would say anyone who takes an interest in womens rights has known the answer for a while.

Seriously who would hate the word woman so much they use the most ridiculous arguments to fight for its erasure.....?

This is why we need clear definitions and correct terminology. Especially in law. Otherwise people can get very confused ^^

Mylittlesandwich · 27/02/2021 17:51

Please keep this to the feminism board. Which I usually avoid and never comment on. It isn't a game of who can shout the loudest here. I don't feel eroded just because someone else has been recognised.

No.

This affects all women if not with this bill it will others.
Who do you think you are telling me where I can post?

LastRoloIsMine · 27/02/2021 17:57

In fact when this thread fills up I may start another in its place.
