How long before the appropriation and exploitation is recognised more fully ?

B&W minstrels were cliched, cartoonish, and “for entertainment”, as well, weren’t they.

Gay men who have never done drag in their lives commonly refer to each other as 'She' and 'queen'
This is true. Much more with the younger crowd though.

PheasantPlucker1 · 25/02/2021 18:24

NoTime I dont need to meet every sexist twat on earh to decide I dont like them Grin

And Im sure if you tell them they wont mind in the slightest, its literally there job to insult women so it wont come as a shock, will it!

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 25/02/2021 18:24

Can't pretend to speak for the youngsters, but it was plenty commonplace back in the '90's and even with people who weren't exactly young then! Grin

AtSwimTwoBerts · 25/02/2021 18:25

I do not and never have viewed drag as 'pretending to be women', hence why I don't find it offensive

Ok, so if you think drag is not pretending to be women, what is it then? Genuien Q.

Notimeforaname · 25/02/2021 18:25

Ah you seem real angry. I hope I haven't pissed you off and I genuinely mean that. I could never get so bothered to be calling people thats and whatnot for having a different opinion than mine.
I couldn't live like that. Flowers

MyCatHatesEverybody · 25/02/2021 18:26

Since I belong to the sex that male drag artists are impersonating I believe it's my right to decide for myself whether I find drag offensive or not. I'm entitled to hold my opinion on the subject the same as any other issue where others will strongly disagree such as politics or religion or even comedy.

As a woman of mixed race who has been subject to both physical and verbal racism throughout my life I find the comparison of drag to racism offensive.

PheasantPlucker1 · 25/02/2021 18:26

Downwith that wasnt the question.

These men who call themselves he put on a dress and want to be called she.

Then they tell you theyre not pretending to be women.

How is that not pretending to be women?

Notimeforaname · 25/02/2021 18:26

Twats* not that's Smile

RootyT00t · 25/02/2021 18:27

I'm not bothered about drag.

But I think comparing it to racism is ridiculous

PheasantPlucker1 · 25/02/2021 18:28

NoTime I actually find it funny, I can assure you theres no anger.

The twats I referred too are your friends who purposefully offend people to make money, not you! unless you do it too

WowStarsWow · 25/02/2021 18:29

@StaciesSpace who are you to decide which transgender organisations are ok to quote as a source or not? You even stated in your last paragraph of your last post that it’s up to trans people to define. If that’s true then it follows that SOME trans organisations define drag artists as trans. So to them, you saying they aren’t trans would be transphobic.

I've met many people who share your way of thinking.
It's sad to come here and have other women telling us how we ought to think and how we better wise up Hmm

Notimeforaname · 25/02/2021 18:30

PheasantPlucker1 I perform with drag artist on stage. Not in drag myself.

Quite.

Got my bingo card of being a misogynist and enabler and what was the other one I was called once before? Like a servant to men 🤣

Notimeforaname · 25/02/2021 18:32

So I guess I am a twat Grin

Devlesko · 25/02/2021 18:33

Drag queens have been in existance for centuries, nothing like the B&W Minstrells, give your head a wobble.
Poor old Widow Twanky, what has she done to you Grin
Do you feel the same about a principle boy being a girl?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 25/02/2021 18:33

Ok, so if you think drag is not pretending to be women, what is it then? Genuien Q

I've always felt it's something distinct and inherent to itself, i.e. it just 'is'. It's 'drag', it's not trying to be something or anything else. I know that's esoteric, but it marries with the response I got from my friends, in that it's simply a part of who they are as people, they're not trying to be someone else, it's inherently part of them.

Notimeforaname · 25/02/2021 18:35

The English word twat is a vulgarism which literally means the vulva or vagina, and is used figuratively as a derogatory epithet. In British English the epithet denotes an obnoxious or stupid person of either sex, whereas in American English it is rarer and usually applied to a woman

Us women gotta stick together eh?Build each other up.Grin

NoTime if you start copying someone and they tell you they find that really insulting, and you carry on...
I work in a school, we call that bullying but you can decide what name or description you think best fits!

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 25/02/2021 18:36

@PheasantPlucker1

Which 'these men' are you referring to specifically?

I can't talk for individuals I don't know. Both the drag queens I do know personally refer to themselves and each other as 'she' persistently, whether they are in drag persona or not.

Notimeforaname · 25/02/2021 18:37

PheasantPlucker1 not everyone finds it offensive though. Drag is not in the definition of bullying.

Did you read the last post? No time is not a drag artist.

And also, you may find it offensive, but I and others don't.

So unless drag artists are standing in front of you dressed up as you, it's not offensive.

And to call it bullying is absurd.

Ijustreallywantacat · 25/02/2021 18:38

Drag was born out of the (often violent and legally enforced) oppression of gay and effeminate men. A middle finger from the oppressed class to society.

Minstrels were born out of the hatred and (often violent and legally enforced) oppression of black individuals.
A middle finger from society to the oppressed class.

Can you see the difference?

Drag has always been, and is especially nowadays, an art form that often goes beyond "dressing as a woman." As a PP said, you'll see aliens, robots and bald heads among the feminine forms. Besides which, I find it difficult to see it as mocking when they're covered in beautiful costumes and make up I couldn't even attempt.

Gay men have called each other 'sister', 'she' etc for generations outside of drag.

Also , 'twat' is quite a misogynistic word for someone with your views...
daysofpearlyspencer · 25/02/2021 18:39
