Drag is the Black & White minstrel-ism of today

How long before the appropriation and exploitation is recognised more fully ?

B&W minstrels were cliched, cartoonish, and “for entertainment”, as well, weren’t they.

Totally agree.

Notimeforaname · 25/02/2021 16:28

I disagree. I love all the drag I have seen. I perform with drag artists in normal times. So I'm personally fine with it.

StaciesSpace · 25/02/2021 16:29

Men had to dress like women in shakespeare plays because of how strict religion was at the time. The same religion that has outcasted gay people all their lives, so what if they are getting some reclaim of it now?

Realistically, aside from offending you when you can turn the channel off or not by the tickets to their show. How is this affecting you?
It's taught me some fun makeup tips. Gave me a laugh.

I agree that black face and drag are very different and should not be compared.
Black face was used only to show black people as inferior, unintelligent and to be kept as slaves. People at the time agreed with it and would treat people the same way as they were done in these skits.
Drag is someone wearing make-up. They don't see women as inferior, they don't think women are stupid, they don't want to take our rights away. No one treats women different because a man on TV put on lippy.

Yes sexism does still happen nowadays, but so does homophobia. Being annoyed because some man on the telly is wearing heels will not help. It won't stop drag either, it's got one of the biggest TV followings out there. It just makes you look angry because they look better than most of us do right now Wink. We're in the middle of a pandemic and gay men are still being killed in other countries for being seen as feminine, drag isn't the problem right now.
The target auidence for drag is gay men and the majority of sexism is at the hands of straight males. Just turn the TV off, you're not the audience they're after, say 'it's not for me' and don't pretend it's the same as black face.

PheasantPlucker1 · 25/02/2021 16:29

Some black performers used to work alongside the minstrels.

Still didnt make it ok!

Sexnotgender · 25/02/2021 16:30

It’s also EVERYWHERE right now.

Like drag queen story time for fucking toddlers! You can take your misogynistic shit the fuck away from my toddler.

PheasantPlucker1 · 25/02/2021 16:32

StaciesSpace so calling women fishy and complaining women are just jealous isnt insulting our intelligence?

Cactus1982 · 25/02/2021 16:33

This thread has to be one most ridiculous things I’ve ever read. Comparing drag to the Black and White Minstrels?! The Op must be on a wind up, surely? You do realise that men have always worn make up, and it’s not something that exclusively belongs to women? Yes?

As for the poster who complained to the BBC about Drag Race U.K. Maybe get a life? Though I’m sure you gave them a good laugh during these difficult and challenging times.

There’s also tinges of homophobia at play here IMO

NothingIcando · 25/02/2021 16:34

*PheasantPlucker1 I said it's ok for ME. I didn't speak for you or anyone else. I love it..you hate it. That's ok. X

PheasantPlucker1 · 25/02/2021 16:36

So should the black and white minstrels be brought back for people who love it, and the offended ones should just not watch, like a pp suggested?

Or would it still be offensive, regardless of those who quite like it?

BarbaraofSeville · 25/02/2021 16:36

Two completely different things, and comparing the two takes away how serious racism is

So while it's obviously not OK to lampoon black people using stereotypes, it's fine to do the same to women?

Notimeforaname · 25/02/2021 16:38

Drag kings impersonate men. Bio queens just impersonate a bigger female character. It's not just men in dresses anymore.

BrumBoo · 25/02/2021 16:39

@StaciesSpace, what do you think stereotypes are? Do you think some types of stereotypes are OK but others are horribly offensive? Where do you think the line is? Do you believe people can act like stereotypes and for it not to be damaging to the people they lampoon?

littlepattilou · 25/02/2021 16:40

I used to actually not mind drag queens, (maybe pre 2010,) but I have to agree @Taoneusa they are just horribly outdated now, as well as offensive to women, and just really bloody naff. Drag Queens need consigning to the history books.

I don't know what the point of them is, but if it's to emulate a woman, they fail miserably. No woman I know, walks, dresses, or acts like a drag queen. Nor do they wear the same kind of awful make up.

littlepattilou · 25/02/2021 16:41

I do think black and white minstrels are more offensive by the way, but I agree with the OP that drag queens, (and the way they portray women,) is entering the same kind of offensive territory.

BrumBoo · 25/02/2021 16:43

There was a huge thread about this just recently. I really cannot see the difference between the old Black and White Minstrels and Drag Queens. However, whilst liberal society will fight heavily against racism, and on a lesser scale homophobia, and lose its shit over everything being transphobic, when it comes to misogyny apparently 'it's no where near as serious' or doesn't exist at all except in the minds of women trying to 'make a fuss about perceived offence'.

Yes its quite a stretch. And comparing it to black people is just getting old now.

I do notice whenever drag kings or bio queens are mentioned on these threads..its mostly ignored so I presume its considered okay by most that women perform in drag?

Notimeforaname · 25/02/2021 16:45

IAmFleshIAmBone · 25/02/2021 16:45

Totally agree, and drag queen story hour is appalling

StaciesSpace · 25/02/2021 16:48

fishy is used more as 'there is something fishy about that women' e.g she's actually man Grin. It has been used offensively in the past, but if you watch the show you'll see its used as a compliment.
The same way the phrase eenie meenie miney mo actually came from an offensive rhyme, but no one bats an eye when it's used now.

I'm not gonna reply anymore as I'm getting busy with DS so if you tag me again im sorry, but basically if you're a straight women, you're not the target audience, just switch the tv off or don't go the story-time session, that way it doesn't need to offend you until you spend your days sitting thinking about it 24/7. I'd be more concerned at what kids see on tiktok or the words used in songs in the charts, than a show on BBC Three with men wearing wigs and dancing to Kelly Clarkson

Drag is horrible.

Women are mocked enough in society without offensive drag shows. Imagine if we dressed up as men and took the piss out of penis size and the way they walk and talk and the ridiculous way they carry on sometimes and how they send their pathetic dick pics - plucked chicken anyone?

Yeah, drag is offensive.

@StaciesSpace

Men performed women’s role in Shakespeare’s play because of the patriarchal system that viewed women as sinful and also as property at the same time. Women weren’t allow to perform because the ‘tiring room’ used for dressing was tiny and they would have to change with the men.

The oppression here wasn’t on gay expression- quite the opposite. Men were openly allowed to dress as women on the playhouses and when performing at court. Their character and morality was never called into question. It was fine for them to step out of their gender role. But not so for women.

Viola in Twelfth Night does it out of desperation and fears that she is liable to be killed if she is discovered. Shakespeare plays with roles here. And it only really allowed because it is a comedy and a misrule play.
