Question for couples. Double or King size?

I moved in with my partner 6 months ago and everything is great except he has a double bed and I'm a restless sleeper and he gives off a ton of heat.
I've said we should get a king size as that's what most people have.
He seems to think it's not the bed and that I'm the one with a problem and that most people have double beds and get on alright with them.
I'd have a super king if it was me but the room wouldn't take it.
So AIBU for not wanting to spend every night squashed up in a double bed?
If you're a couple what do you have?

We have a king size and each had a king size when we lived alone. Double beds are far too small for 2 adults.

If our room was bigger I’d definitely go for a superking.

@Tisforptarmigan

King size only. Can't even imagine being stuck in a double bed with him.

Super king size might be too big for us, as I have to kick him occasionally for snoring and jab him in the ribs. Might not be able to reach in a really big bed.

You can reach, just about. I think we are outgrowing our superking now...

Superking Grin DH wanted an emperor but I didn’t want to mess about not being able to get bedsheets.

Frozenintime · 24/02/2021 19:13

Definitely king size. On holiday we were in a double bed and it was awful. So squashed

LooksBetterWithAFaceMask · 24/02/2021 19:14

We have a double, both tall as well neither of us are restless sleepers. We feel a bit lonely when we stay in hotels with huge beds and end up cuddling up in a corner of it.

MountainPeakGeek · 24/02/2021 19:24

@MissConductUS

We have a queen size bed, which is much bigger than a double but a bit smaller than a king. Is that size available in the UK?
The US queen size mattress is closest in size to the one referred to as king in the UK (a UK king is 60" x 78").

We also have a N.American queen (60" x 80") so UK king size width, but an extra 2" longer.

No way would I want to sleep in a UK double (US full) as that's only 54" wide.

I'd love a bigger bed than we have, but our room isn't big enough for it to not look daft.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/02/2021 19:24

Get a king size!
Our bed is between king and super king - found it in a sale. (Bit of a bugger with fitted sheets but just use a super king duvet.)
Partly because I don’t sleep well any more anyway, I really hate having to sleep in a standard double nowadays, it feels so cramped. When we had to spend a night in a hotel a few months ago, and I couldn’t find anywhere with a kingsize, I booked a room with twin beds.

We got super king when we moved to this house, it didn’t solve one being disturbed by the other so we’ve gone separate rooms.

I’d have gone king if I’d known that would be the upshot as:
the space is dominated by the bed
Changing bedding is a PITA
You tend to have to go to expensive ranges to get bedding for a super king - supermarkets/matalan etc tend to only go up to king

Hanging out SK on a rotary drier can be a challenge

hedgehogger1 · 24/02/2021 19:25

We have a king. When we're picking a holiday destination one of my criteria is a king

Covidcorvid · 24/02/2021 19:26

I got a king last year after 20 years in a double. I can’t tell you how much of a difference it’s made to my sleep. Never going back to a double snd can’t believe I had one for so long.

RowanAlong · 24/02/2021 19:27

King size!

Halfling · 24/02/2021 19:28

Super king

SnackSizeRaisin · 24/02/2021 19:29

A double bed is narrower than 2 baby cots side by side. No way is that enough space unless you are both tiny!

strawberry2017 · 24/02/2021 19:29

Super king here. My husband is the same radiates so much heat and a double bed was hell. We both sleep so much happier with our own space.

gollymissdolly · 24/02/2021 19:32

We have a king size bed. If our bedroom was wider I'd have a super king with 2 single mattresses as DH likes a very firm mattress and I like one with a bit more give but not too soft.

Royalbloo · 24/02/2021 19:34

I have a king on my own...delicious!

Royalbloo · 24/02/2021 19:35

With a king size duvet

Royalbloo · 24/02/2021 19:35

Sorry, super king duvet it's perfect

Nameitychangity · 24/02/2021 19:35

Been married for 20 years this year and always had a double....until we moved house last year. I am at this moment waiting on delivery of my Super King! Can't wait! It will be a big difference going from a double to a Super King but now we have the room I wanted to treat us. Has cost a fortune to change all the bedding though!

TwoBlueFish · 24/02/2021 19:40

Super king, definitely wouldn’t want a double.

LadyEloise · 24/02/2021 19:42

Superking in our house.

An average cot is approximately 2 ft wide.
A double bed is 4ft 6 inches wide. So you are sharing a bed that gives you about the same width as a baby gets in their cot.
Ok you get an extra 3 inches each.

Dee1975 · 24/02/2021 19:43

King. And I’d like bigger!

Wannabecheerleader · 24/02/2021 19:45

Kingsize.

My PILs have a small double. I’ve no idea how they even have room to turn over.

Wannabecheerleader · 24/02/2021 19:45

Its 4ft rather than 4ft6

janj2301 · 24/02/2021 19:48

My daughter and her husband visited last February and used my kingsize, they were really pissed that they had just bought a double, they say next time it will be kingsize. Won't be too long though, their cats have scratched their divan base to pieces!!
