Question for couples. Double or King size?

I moved in with my partner 6 months ago and everything is great except he has a double bed and I'm a restless sleeper and he gives off a ton of heat.
I've said we should get a king size as that's what most people have.
He seems to think it's not the bed and that I'm the one with a problem and that most people have double beds and get on alright with them.
I'd have a super king if it was me but the room wouldn't take it.
So AIBU for not wanting to spend every night squashed up in a double bed?
If you're a couple what do you have?

When I went to Jordan, the hotel we stayed in, had the most biggest bed ever!! Literally from one end of the room to the other, and the same size duvet, ours I would say the same size as 3 king size in one. The room our friends stayed in was much more bigger!! I don't know why the beds are soo big, but it was nice having all that space

Marmite27 · 24/02/2021 18:52

King, but I still daydream about the emperor size bed we had in Mexico...

Rowgtfc72 · 24/02/2021 18:54

King size.
Dh is 6ft 6 and can touch all four corners. He used to hang off the edge of a double.

AnotherEmma · 24/02/2021 18:55

King size!
We'd like super king but our bedroom isn't big enough.
I think a double bed is only suitable for a single adult who mostly sleeps alone and occasionally shares, not for a cohabiting couple who share a bed every night.

Spied · 24/02/2021 18:56

King but if I had a larger room I'd fit the biggest bed I could as I'm not overly comfortable in my King with DP either.
Love him being away.

LittleGungHo · 24/02/2021 18:56

We miss our super king. We have a king and it still feels to close.

Wall0ps · 24/02/2021 18:57

I’m not in a couple and I’m in a king size. All for me.
I won’t stay in a hotel if it’s a single bed, I just like to spread out.

AnotherEmma · 24/02/2021 18:57

PS IIRC, UK king size is 150cm wide and EU king size is 160cm wide, so it's worth getting EU king if you have the space and can find the bed frame and mattress you want (IKEA do EU sizes).

ItsJackieWeaverBitch · 24/02/2021 18:58

We have a king sized would prefer super king but not possible in our bedroom. Shared a double before and it was horrible- both of us got hardly any sleep and we were crabby. We have our own king sized duvets too which I can’t recommend enough.

UndeadSlut · 24/02/2021 18:59

Double here for short fatso me and tall skinny DP. Needed a king with my ex who was tall and big but I think that was more because he was a very active sleeper, liked the duvet cocooned around him. DP sleeps like the dead, wakes up in exactly the same position he fell asleep in. Double is entirely sufficient for us but we do have a king size duvet which helps a lot!

BigPaperBag · 24/02/2021 18:59

I loathe our double but our room is too small for anything else really 😢 No joke, top of the list for purchase when we move next year is a giant bed and I mean HUGE!!

weaselish · 24/02/2021 18:59

King or super king!! It winds me up no end when UK holiday lets or hotel rooms persist with double beds - just uncomfortable for most couples.

basketfulloflaundry · 24/02/2021 19:00

Two doubles or separate rooms? We have super king. Minimum requirement. I check bed size anywhere we ever go!

safariboot · 24/02/2021 19:01

Tbh a UK "double" is a one person bed. Pretty sure other countries don't consider 4'6" enough for two.

lunarlife · 24/02/2021 19:01

Super king.

Slurtdragon · 24/02/2021 19:01

Superking for us! I’m 5’2 DP 5’11 dog - medium, and I still sometimes don’t have the best nights sleep 🤣😩

BMW6 · 24/02/2021 19:03

Separate bedrooms 100%.

Tisforptarmigan · 24/02/2021 19:03

King size only. Can't even imagine being stuck in a double bed with him.

Super king size might be too big for us, as I have to kick him occasionally for snoring and jab him in the ribs. Might not be able to reach in a really big bed.

CruCru · 24/02/2021 19:03

Super king.

SimonJT · 24/02/2021 19:06

We have a superking, but I find the type of mattress is the most important thing. We sleep very close together, but as we have a good mattress as the heavier person I don’t cause a dip for my partner to roll in to.

Zoomoff · 24/02/2021 19:09

We went from a king to a superking and it's the best thing we ever did. I still end up sleeping on the edge but the edge is wider. Reading some of these comments I may change to two single duvets to see if that's another improvement. At the same time friends went from a king to a double and they haven't stopped moaning since. Can't find a good mattress apparently - I think it's the size of the bed personally.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2021 19:10

@BMW6

Separate bedrooms 100%.
Yes, for sleeping, if at all possible. And obviously one of those beds should be as large as the room allows, for not sleeping.Grin
SillyYak · 24/02/2021 19:10

Super king and two separate duvets and even then DH often resorts to the spare room.

MirandaMarple · 24/02/2021 19:10

Superking. When in hotels we ask for single beds unless it's a superking. When we go camping we have separate double air beds.

Life is too short not to spread out in bed. I just can't fathom why anybody would want to share a double bed. It's miserable.

BluntAndToThePoint80 · 24/02/2021 19:11

Super king.
