Question for couples. Double or King size?

I moved in with my partner 6 months ago and everything is great except he has a double bed and I'm a restless sleeper and he gives off a ton of heat.
I've said we should get a king size as that's what most people have.
He seems to think it's not the bed and that I'm the one with a problem and that most people have double beds and get on alright with them.
I'd have a super king if it was me but the room wouldn't take it.
So AIBU for not wanting to spend every night squashed up in a double bed?
If you're a couple what do you have?

Separate!!!!!!!! And separate bedrooms Grin

BigButtons · 28/02/2021 08:28

Dp and I make do with a small double. He’s 6 ft, but we are both skinny and like to cuddle most of the night.

ODFOx · 28/02/2021 09:16

Double. I like fresh air all year round and DH is a human radiator. Even midwinter we cuddle together in a double with a 4 tog duvet and the window wide open. In a king size I'd freeze.
And I like the closeness.

Imapotato · 28/02/2021 09:42

King size here. DH is tall and very warm, and I sleep so much better since having the king size. I might even go for a super king next time.

RampantIvy · 28/02/2021 11:17

I remember once taking some (home made) cold pizza to school for my packed lunch. It would have been 1972/3 My friend asked me "what them black things" were. I told her they were olives, and she said "I thought they were green with red bit in"

hannahbananananananana · 28/02/2021 13:35

We just bought a super king and going from a double it's amazing, you have the choice to cuddle together or stretch out

CatBumJuice · 28/02/2021 16:45

Double bed each in separate rooms. It's the only way DH and I can get any sleep!

ParisJeTAime · 28/02/2021 16:48

We have a double, because our room is an awkward shape. It would difficult to get a king in there! I'm far from skinny or petite FWIW. Dh is also 6 foot tall. We fit in fine! But I'd like a king size if we didn't fit in.

I know my dbro had a huuuuuuuge bed when he lived with his now exw. Massive. The biggest bed I've ever seen IRL!

Paquerette · 28/02/2021 18:43

Super king.

I think that a double is a actually smaller than two single beds so massively unreasonable. If you think that you don't have room, I would personally rather have no bedside table than a smaller bed.

I've been looking at UK holidays, and some hotels still have only double beds as a room option. 😱 We tried that once after having a super king for a couple of years and no way will we ever make that mistake again.

ParisJeTAime · 28/02/2021 18:51

In our room, is the length which is the problem. Doubles are also shorter than Kings! If we put a king size bed in our room, the bedroom door wouldn't close Confused. If we were desperate for a king size bed, we could tear out some fitted wardrobes and / or get rid of the en suite or something. But it doesn't seem that urgent. We honestly fit fine and I'm really quite big all over! DH also has a reasonably big frame.

If we didn't fit, we'd change it but it's fine, thanks Smile

PurpleFlower1983 · 28/02/2021 18:52

King size at least.

Catra · 28/02/2021 18:53

We have a super king size. Each Grin

sparklefarts · 28/02/2021 19:01

Neither.

Super king

RedcurrantPuff · 28/02/2021 19:03

We have a superking, had to have a double in our last house. Have no idea how we managed. I can’t bear it when we go away on holiday and it’s a double bed.

LochNessSwim · 28/02/2021 19:13

I couldn’t change from a super king now. I used to hate staying at MIL’s house, as there’s only a double bed. Neither DH or I got any sleep!! We also played tug of war over the double duvet. Thankfully her house is too small for us to stay with our DC, so we don’t do overnight visits any longer

JakesMum88 · 28/02/2021 19:16

Depends on how much room you have. If you have room go for a king size.

GrumpyHoonMain · 28/02/2021 19:18

King or Super King if it fits the room. We have had a double before but I don’t like them as like you I feel too hot.

CausingChaos2 · 28/02/2021 19:26

I have a double and am debating what to go to next. I think king size is only 15cm wider than a double? So all the expense of a new frame, mattress and bed linen for 15cm? Doesn’t seem worth it. Super king size seems more worthwhile but would need to give up my bedside table, and would bed linen be hard to find? Not polycotton bedding, but 200-500 thread count.

sabrinathemiddleagewitch · 28/02/2021 19:27

We have a king and will be getting a superking when we move.

I genuinely couldn't share a double. Rather sleep on the sofa

Giraffaelina · 28/02/2021 19:49

King size! And a double in the spare room in case the king size proves to be too small on certain nights haha!! Right with you though, even before we had a DC and bed shared, DH snores and I get too hot and wriggly so always spent a fair amount of nights in the spare room...never did any harm and sometimes all you need is an undisturbed night sleep! :)

LadyEloise · 01/03/2021 08:37

@CausingChaos2 Good quality Superking bedlinen is easily available. Don't let that be an excuse not to get a Superking bed.

It’s not hard at all to get decent bedding for a super king. Dunelm, John Lewis etc sell it.
CausingChaos2 · 01/03/2021 09:20

Thank you both. You’ve persuaded me Smile

Buttercupcup · 01/03/2021 09:22

Super king and separate double duvets!

daisyjgrey · 01/03/2021 09:25

I have a double, we're in the smallest room so the kids had bigger bedrooms and any bigger wouldn't fit. We have no issues and neither of us are skinny skinny. The dog also occasionally sneaks in by my feet.

The only thing I do insist on is a duvet one size bigger than the bed. Double bed, king size duvet, it seems to make a difference.

What are you all doing at night that means you need acres of bed?!
