Question for couples. Double or King size?

I moved in with my partner 6 months ago and everything is great except he has a double bed and I'm a restless sleeper and he gives off a ton of heat.
I've said we should get a king size as that's what most people have.
He seems to think it's not the bed and that I'm the one with a problem and that most people have double beds and get on alright with them.
I'd have a super king if it was me but the room wouldn't take it.
So AIBU for not wanting to spend every night squashed up in a double bed?
If you're a couple what do you have?

King Size. Only because he needs somewhere to keep his clothes - it would be a superking otherwise.

I'm 5'5", he's 5'7" and we never touch at night unless we want to. It also provides enough space for the cat to express his true liquid form between/above the pillows without free scalp acupuncture.

I’m fat as fuck, my DH is 6’4 and we’re perfectly happy in a double normally (although we have a blanket box at the bottom of the bed for his feet!). It’s only as I’m hitting menopause and getting too hot that I want a bigger bed so I can roll away!

Mother87 · 25/02/2021 20:11

We had a superking - but after 20 years, DH 'accepted' that we had such different sleep/evening schedules that he agreed to separate rooms... both much more chilled/sleep better (neither of us sleep brilliantly anyway, but at least we don't disturb each other now)...and we're actually separated, but planning to move back together soon - in separate rooms

Youcunnyfunt · 25/02/2021 20:15

I'm single now, but haven't been for long... I have a double bed and it's fine (with someone else). But I'm 5 foot nothing and quite small. Grin

Wbeezer · 25/02/2021 20:18

Superking with our own duvets, first tried this combo in an Airb&b in Berlin and decided we had to go for it.

Dimples13 · 25/02/2021 22:40

Super King for us, I love our bed Smile

Hydrate · 25/02/2021 23:44

Neither of us can sleep in a double.

Hydrate · 25/02/2021 23:50

Oh, and we have a king.

AllesAusLiebe · 26/02/2021 01:21

@Wbeezer yes to two duvets! One of the very few cultural nuances that I've insisted on importing from my home country. Even a reluctant dh admits that he now sleeps so much better.

The great thing is that when the weather changes, you can opt for a different weight of cover to that of your partner.

I'm genuinely happy that it's changed your life for the better! Grin

I like a big big bed that I can properly stretch out without touching DP & vice versa...except of course when we want to..

BionicEar · 26/02/2021 01:42

Go for bigger bed you won’t regret it.

Recall when my DH and I were setting up home together a wise friend advised me to get a King size bed to help preserve sanity on sharing a bed! She had made mistake of getting a double and later upgraded to a king.

So glad we went for a king as when have shared a double has definitely affected quality of sleep.

FinallyFluid · 26/02/2021 02:17

Before we went on honeymoon we had a double, on honeymoon we had an emperor.(Bali)

Mahoosive X Mahoosive .........pure bliss.

We came home and used wedding cash to upgrade to a king size bed.

We now sleep in separate rooms, as he is profoundly deaf and snores, he no longer wakes himself up snoring, so something had to give...

Anyway, point being if we ever moved to a house with a bank balance big enough I would have an emperor.

Actually scrub that, just googled, bed linen not that easy to come across.

Hydrate · 26/02/2021 04:15

I just want to add, once you get that king size bed, your boyfriend will never want to sleep in a double bed again!

kavalkada · 26/02/2021 06:05

Super king for us and I love it. Enough space for us and two kids when they want a cuddle.

ClaryFairchild · 26/02/2021 07:22

As big a bed as you can fit in the room, lol!

A double is what a single person has to give themselves a bit more room.

Hardbackwriter · 26/02/2021 07:30

I had no idea that DH and I were so hard-done to with our double bed! It's an antique and an heirloom in his family so I can't see us changing it, but I think I may have worked out why every single baby/toddler sleep thread recommends cosleeping but I find it hell - when other people are talking about it apparently they're talking about sharing a much bigger bed!

Athrawes · 26/02/2021 07:37

Queen sized.

Which is King to you...

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 26/02/2021 08:41

Two king sizes in separate rooms! I toss and turn and like to be colder in bed, DH is like a furnace, snores and is a lighter sleeper. Since we had separate beds we both sleep very well and don't end up wanting to kill each other every night.

We only book hotels that have at least king sizes but often book a room with two doubles.

ElGuardiandenoche · 27/02/2021 23:58

@Athrawes

Queen sized.

Which is King to you...

Now you see when I was younger I'm sure that the bed width vs names were different to what they are today.

I'm sure it was
2ft 6 = small single
3ft = single
4ft = small double
4ft 6 = double
5ft = Queen
6ft = King
6ft 6 = Super King
7ft = Emperor

But then I'm a 50 something old gimmer and my memory may be failing me.

Coffeeandaride · 28/02/2021 00:04

Superking, wish we’d done it sooner

Justa47 · 28/02/2021 00:06

@likeamillpond
Super king size

doublenotdobble · 28/02/2021 00:39

Another vote for super king!

DenisetheMenace · 28/02/2021 00:41

King size is about average now.
Guessing the sizes were drawn up decades ago and people are just bigger now. Our youngest is just 18 and 6ft 3” already.

Deadringer · 28/02/2021 00:47

We are both about average height, although i am a bit of a fatty, and we have always had a double bed with a king size duvet and have been perfectly comfortable. However if i was starting out i would probably choose seperate houses.

CuriousSeal · 28/02/2021 08:06

We sleep in a double. He's over 6ft too.

We like it cosy Grin
