Question for couples. Double or King size?

I moved in with my partner 6 months ago and everything is great except he has a double bed and I'm a restless sleeper and he gives off a ton of heat.
I've said we should get a king size as that's what most people have.
He seems to think it's not the bed and that I'm the one with a problem and that most people have double beds and get on alright with them.
I'd have a super king if it was me but the room wouldn't take it.
So AIBU for not wanting to spend every night squashed up in a double bed?
If you're a couple what do you have?

We have super king loads of space and so comfortable

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 25/02/2021 01:34

Bucking the trend here. Both tall, him slim, me until recently very fat. King size absolutely fine, even with a toddler in the mix.

Poppins2016 · 25/02/2021 01:44

King at a minimum. If we had the space I'd jump at the chance for a super king.

Anystarinthesky · 25/02/2021 02:29

King size, DP is tall and large so it works much better.

MaryShelley1818 · 25/02/2021 06:05

We have a Superking. I absolutely couldn't share a double.

warmeduppizza · 25/02/2021 07:53

Double, anything bigger feels like sleeping on a stage.

Snog · 25/02/2021 07:54

Super king or separate bedrooms for the best night's sleep.
When viewing properties I am dismayed by how often the master bedroom is too small for a superking bed.

ladygindiva · 25/02/2021 08:39

Upgraded to King after dp moved in, could never go back. A double is tiny. And he's not a big bloke. I'd get superking if it would fit in the room!

kikisparks · 25/02/2021 08:42

Super king, we love it, so much space!

CherryValanc · 25/02/2021 08:49

I wonder if those saying a double is plenty of room are talking about what others are calling a king. Depending where you look a 5ft bed (king) can be called a double.

It happens on every thread bed size is talked about!!

For the majority of people in UK and Ireland it's:

Cot (23" x 47") 60cm x 120cm

Toddler (2'3" x 4'6") 70cm x 140cm

Small single (2.5' x 6'3") 75xm x 190cm

Single (3' x 6'3) 90cm x 190cm

Euro single (3' x 6'6) 90cm x 200cm

Large single (3'6" x 6'3") 75cm x 190cm

Small double also "Prince" (4'0" x 6'3") 120cm x 190cm

Double also "Queen" (4'6 x 6'3) 135cm x 190cm

King (5' x 6'6) 150cm x 200cm

Super King (6' x 6'6) 180cm x 200cm

When it comes to the sizes double and above some people refer to a King as a double (or Queen), the Super King as King. Australia and America use these names (and other counties too)

Also I think in American bed sizes might have similar names but the actual measurements differ too.

There's bigger sizes too - Emperor, Caeser etc! Personally I'd opt for the biggest bed i can fit into the room. It's only when you get to Super King do you have the same space as you would in a single bed.

LilMidge01 · 25/02/2021 08:51

Well we have a double and I've never had any problem with it. But if you're uncomfortable it's a no-brainer, go with King. Everyone is different!

20viona · 25/02/2021 08:52

Superking never less!

KeyWorker · 25/02/2021 08:59

Doubles are for teenagers or single adults. King size for couple that share a bed.

Crabbyboot · 25/02/2021 11:36

Super king with separate duvets and earplugs!

DorisDances · 25/02/2021 12:35

Double and wouldnt change - love it!

You left out euro sizes beyond singles, both of which are wider (and longer!) than their UK versions.

Euro double = 140 x 200 cm
Euro king = 160 x 220 cm

A euro double is big enough for us. We do have a very good mattress, though, and hardly feel it when the other rolls over.

We slept for a week last year in a king size bed and it was awful because of the crap mattress. We slept so badly because we bounced around with every move and woke each other up, plus it dipped in the middle and we kept rolling into each other. So imho mattress quality trumps bed size every time.

RampantIvy · 25/02/2021 18:55

Some couples like sleeping cuddled up to each other. I can't. I need my own space to be able to even get to sleep.

Some couples maybe don't take up as much room as we do (we aren't big, just tall)

Some couples have bedrooms too small to accommodate anything bigger than a standard double bed.

partyatthepalace · 25/02/2021 19:14

Super King!

MaltedMilk88 · 25/02/2021 19:28

Super king! Absolutely would not be without it - felt like he was a million miles away from me to begin with but honestly we both love the extra space now

changi · 25/02/2021 19:41

We have a superking four poster but can cope with smaller without any real issues. Even 4' for a few days.

Beds with solid ends are a no no though as my husband's feet stick out of a superking.

zigaziga · 25/02/2021 19:44

@Kpo58

Definitely a King size. Double is only fine if you are both really skinny and under 5'5".
Both DH and I are slim and quite short and I am under 5’5 by more than he is over it.. A double is fine if that’s what there’s space for but it’s not ideal even for us. We have a King.
RampantIvy · 25/02/2021 19:47

Yes. This is an issue for DH as well.

lazylinguist · 25/02/2021 19:55

I'm 5'6" and dh is 5'8". I'm a size 14 and he's fairly broad shouldered and solid. We're fine in a double!

Mummadeze · 25/02/2021 19:58

Wow, I have never once thought about getting anything bigger than a double. I thought super kings were just in hotels!

Oblomov21 · 25/02/2021 20:01

King
Dh still gets up and ends up on the sofa!
