Dog pissing on a wall - yay or nay?

My friend is isolating at the moment due to her colleague contracting COVID so I've been walking her Collie everyday. I'm really not a dog person, at all (though I've grown a huge soft spot for this particular pooch) so don't know the etiquette around public dog behaviour. He's been a little star, he doesn't approach other dogs or people, so maybe I've got complacent with him. Because today he pissed on somebody's brick wall - even if I wanted to stop him, what was I supposed to do, kick him in the nuts? Anyway, a woman stormed out the house and had a real go at me, saying it's disgusting people let's their dogs do that and she's sick of it. I was Confused and said I couldn't exactly stop him. She said he needs to be trained to not do it and if she catches me again she's taking a picture. I told my friend when I dropped the dog off, who just thought it was funny and has never heard of a dog being trained to not piss on a residential wall. I wondered what the MN consensus was - yay or nay to having your wall pissed on?

A dog pissed on our gatepost today.
I couldn't give a shiny shite.

Glitterandunicorns · 24/02/2021 15:06

I'm a dog lover and have had dogs myself in the past. In saying that, I absolutely hate it when dogs wee on my wall. There are plenty of other places they can do it and it's completely down to the person walking the dog/ their owner to prevent it.

DogsSausages · 24/02/2021 15:07

Would you like a dog pissing on your property. Why cant it do it on the kerb.

Snowymcsnowsony · 24/02/2021 15:07

You need to walk him too far to aim at someone's property.. Be that a wall or car. Very grim...

Palavah · 24/02/2021 15:08

Of course you can stop him/train him not to do it.

Was he not on a lead?

DogsSausages · 24/02/2021 15:08

If a dog is not able to walk a few steps away then at least have the decency to squirt water on the wall to wash it away.

CoalCraft · 24/02/2021 15:08

Ridiculous thing to get worked up over.

Backtoreality1 · 24/02/2021 15:12

Outside wall facing onto pavement, no problem - gate posts or inside property absolutely not. This crazy lady will have cats pissing in her garden on a regular basis, birds dropping business from a great height....it really is ridiculous to worry about a dog peeing on an outside wall.

RickJames · 24/02/2021 15:12

Well, on Monday I gave someone short shrift for letting his dog walk up my neighbours drive on a really long lead and piss all over her bins. A while back this guy also let his dog do a massive poo on my other neighbour's drive so I told him to pick it up and control his dog. I'm starting to think he's not actually NT and that I've been a bit harsh - I mean, it's not normal to be so unaware of social norms around fouling and private property.

An outside wall, next to the pavement? No, I think that's reasonable. The rain will wash it off and it's not something that has to be handled, like a bin.

Porcupineintherough · 24/02/2021 15:13

No it's vile. Keep him on a lead then you can pull him away.

Puppywithattitude · 24/02/2021 15:16

I can understand why she's hacked off, especially if numerous dogs are doing it.
It's perfectly possible to get your dog to pee elsewhere.

SnarkyBag · 24/02/2021 15:17

I don’t let my dog piss on people’s walls, front gardens or shrubs

ThePricklySheep · 24/02/2021 15:17

There was a really long thread about this a while ago. I think it was 65% for pissing on walls, 35% for training it to go elsewhere. Roughly.

I was surprised there were so many for training it actually. I didn’t know it was a thing.

StoneofDestiny · 24/02/2021 15:21

Who wants urine over their house? It stinks and seeps into the brickwork. Would you like a man pissing on the wall of your house? No? Then why let a dog do it on someone's property.

Topseyt · 24/02/2021 15:21

I live on a corner plot and I am pretty sure most of the neighbourhood dogs have pissed on my wall and my fence regularly.

I couldn't give a shit and I have a dog myself. As long as people clear up their dog's shits I am really not bothered. There are far more important things to get het up over. Just ignore it.

SnarkyBag · 24/02/2021 15:21

Dogs form habits really quickly so if they pee on a specific garden wall once or twice then it almost becomes habitual so it’s just about forming good habits. I know exactly where my dog would love to take a piss so I make sure we don’t walk past these parts briskly! I also make sure he has his big morning pee and poo in the garden before we go on a walk

Puppywithattitude · 24/02/2021 15:22

We had a neighbour who let his dog every morning, without fail, pee on one of the tyres of our car.
My dh 'had a word' and it didn't happen again.

Babyroobs · 24/02/2021 15:23

My boy pisses up everything, car tyres, wheelie bins, walls, posts. I try to pull him away from things but sometimes it happens. He peed up the Papa John delivery guys motorbike a while ago and we had to make a quick getaway.

Topseyt · 24/02/2021 15:24

@DogsSausages

How do you propose that dog owners should do that? Take a watering can with them on every walk?? Ridiculous.

I always clear up poo. Wee is different and the rain will soon wash it off anyway.

Pippa234 · 24/02/2021 15:25

It's disgusting and antisocial.
I don't understand people who let dogs do this just keep your dog away from people's walls its not rocket science.
I never let my dogs wee on people's property.
It's really not that difficult.

PraiseBee · 24/02/2021 15:27

It's poor form imo and would be pissed

goodwinter · 24/02/2021 15:28

I broadly agree with this. I don't let my dog wee on or around doorways, cars, bins, or front gardens. But I don't stop him from weeing on boundary bushes/walls (ie separating pavements from front gardens).
YoniAndGuy · 24/02/2021 15:29

It's pretty antisocial. Your friend laughed? Nice.

It's not a case of 'training' them with pictures of residential walls with a big red cross next to them it's just kind of obvious. You have dog on lead. Dog goes up to wall and starts cocking leg, you say no and pull away to neutral area, grass, whatever. No big deal. Just manners...

If the dog is off the lead bounding round on a residential road then that's another thing entirely and not ok at all!

DogsSausages · 24/02/2021 15:31

Topseyt, a bottle of water with a squirty top will be fine, no need for a watering can. In the summer when its warmer a responsible dog Walker would carry water anyway for the poor thing to drink. .

emilyfrost · 24/02/2021 15:34

It’s vile, and it’s indicative of lazy dog owner behaviour. Your friend needs to pull her finger out and train her mutt so her choice of animal doesn’t affect anyone else.

(And yes, of course you could have stopped it Hmm)
