Dog pissing on a wall - yay or nay?

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 24/02/2021 15:03

My friend is isolating at the moment due to her colleague contracting COVID so I've been walking her Collie everyday. I'm really not a dog person, at all (though I've grown a huge soft spot for this particular pooch) so don't know the etiquette around public dog behaviour. He's been a little star, he doesn't approach other dogs or people, so maybe I've got complacent with him. Because today he pissed on somebody's brick wall - even if I wanted to stop him, what was I supposed to do, kick him in the nuts? Anyway, a woman stormed out the house and had a real go at me, saying it's disgusting people let's their dogs do that and she's sick of it. I was Confused and said I couldn't exactly stop him. She said he needs to be trained to not do it and if she catches me again she's taking a picture. I told my friend when I dropped the dog off, who just thought it was funny and has never heard of a dog being trained to not piss on a residential wall. I wondered what the MN consensus was - yay or nay to having your wall pissed on?

Yes grim, I didn't let mine piss on other people's property.

TallFriendlyGinger · 24/02/2021 20:38

I really wouldn't care if its just a Bush or wall facing the street, male dogs like to pee on to something not just mid air clocking the leg most of the time. It's just wee and it runs off and washes off in the rain.

IdblowJonSnow · 24/02/2021 20:45

I think many woildnt care but this woman obviously does and so I'd give her wall a wide berth in future!
I guess I'd prefer dogs not to wee on my hedges or verges but I guess its something dogs just do? If a dog peed on my car and would definitely say something to whoever was walking it...

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 24/02/2021 20:49

It's grim. The owner of that property presumably doesn't have a dog (or has one that she's bothered to train). Why should she have to put up with someone else's skanky behaviour?

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 24/02/2021 20:51

I couldn’t care less, tbh.

Marzipanfruit · 24/02/2021 20:52

I used to have problems with dog owners allowing their animals to pee against my bin on bin day. Trouble is, if one does it, they all follow. Disgusting. The owners were seemingly oblivious and too busy with their phones/sippy coffee cups. I like dogs but have found they hate liberal sprinklings of ground white pepper. One sneeze and problem solved. No dogs harmed but wish the selfish owners would watch what their pets are doing!

Jumpers268 · 24/02/2021 20:59

"Skanky behaviour". This thread is the best. OP it's not even your dog and you're doing your friend (and the dog!) a favour. I'd probably cross the road to avoid the woman's house. What's funnier is it's likely marking so she's probably got like 20 dogs pissing on that same spot every day.

WeAllHaveWings · 24/02/2021 21:07

I would never let my dog pee on someone else's property/wall/fence. As soon as he pauses to sniff he is moved on until we reach an appropriate area.

Harder if it's not your dog and you don't recognise the cue, but it would have been more polite to apologise to the home owner with a brief - sorry, it's not my dog I'm helping an ill friend and I didn't realise/know he was going to go - instead of a pettish - I couldn't exactly stop him.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 24/02/2021 21:08

That being said, I have got a feeling that this may be a reverse? I see the OP a lot on these kinds of threads usually condoning the dog and it's owner. I do apologise I am wrong about that.

@lillymay84 you're not wrong, I am usually vocal on the dog threads as I actually have a bit of a fear about big dogs and hate careless owners who let them bound up to me and then shout "it's ok she's friendly", or similar annoyances. Which is why I said in my OP that I'm really it a dog person - but this isn't a reverse. In fact I nearly said no to my friend but she really doesn't have anyone else and I have to say I've enjoyed every last minute of walking her dog. I've even been going down for cuddles with him - I'm someone who a week ago would cross the road if I saw a Collie. I'll really miss him when she comes out of isolation Sad

@Bananaman123

God better things in life to worry about eh, what she going to do with a picture shame him on facebook? Dogs piss on my wall all the time as its close to the woods where they are walked, couldnt care less
I reckon this is what she was threatening- which I could do without as I'm a teacher and the parents at school are horrified when we act in any way human so it would guarantee complaints if posted in the local spotted site 🙄

Obviously other dogs have been pissing on the wall and she is annoyed. Dog pissed there because he could smell other dogs piss. She obviously got cabin fever due to lockdown. Who would seriously care?!! It’s not like the dog left a brown parcel!!!??!!

MuthaFunka61 · 24/02/2021 21:15

This thread is bizzare with some of the comments.
I'm training my dog to assist me,so no sniffing or looking around when he's his harness on but when on collar and lead and given the 'sniff ' command he has a good old time leaving and 'reading' other dogs messages.
What made me laugh was the idea that any peemail will be the cause of any dog that's now alive,it's probably been happening since the house was built and perhaps even before depending on it's location.

What wasn't so funny was when I was exiting my canal boat (I'm now unfortunately a land lubber) to see a couple stood watching their dog pee on my mooring ropes.

Now that's antisocial.

CaffeineAndCrochet · 24/02/2021 21:23

@lillymay84

You can train a dog to ask permission before they go for a pee. Mine will sit down and stare at me until I tell him it's ok to go sniff. I generally only let him pee on grass or trees and will pull him away if he tries to mark a spot on a wall.

This is indicative of the madness of MN when it comes to dogs. Dogs sometimes piss on walls, lamp posts, ect. That's what dogs do. It's not out of control nor it is going to harm anyone or anything. My dog pisses and poops wherever she fancies. I pick it up. End of. Crazy people on this thread. Just let your dog be a dog. Jeez.

He can still 'be a dog'. He gets to have a good long sniff and go for a pee almost whenever he wants. I just make sure it's somewhere appropriate. Against walls - where he's going to leave a massive puddle flowing across the path for people to walk in - are not appropriate.
MrsMercedes · 24/02/2021 21:29

how does this woman...or anyone....control the cats, foxes, rats etc etc peeing on their 'property'??

MrsMercedes · 24/02/2021 21:30

@CaffeineAndCrochet its not a 'massive puddle' though is it?? they tend to do several smaller wee's marking territory.

CaffeineAndCrochet · 24/02/2021 21:35

@MrsMercedes Not the first one of the walk. Think Niagara Falls!

KilljoysDutch · 24/02/2021 21:45

"And there we go! Straight to cats as it always goes on dog threads!"

Hardly straight to it was it? and I noticed you offered no defence? I just can't see the difference between animals pissing on your property except that one is accepted and the other vilified.

Porcupineintherough · 24/02/2021 22:08

So because we are forced to accept cats pudding and shitting on our properties they should be fair game for dogs too? Even though they legally have to be under their owners control?

And as for foxes they live at far lower population densities even in urban areas than dogs do.

Racoonworld · 24/02/2021 22:14

I would not want a dog pissing on my wall or grass, or any part of my property. How disgusting and antisocial.

lillymay84 · 24/02/2021 22:18

Oh my goodness... I wish people would stop moaning about cats. Just get a life. The outside world will never be sterile. Dogs are legally meant to be kept under control. Cats are legally allowed to be free roaming. Complaining about cat shit is a bit like complaining about bird shit. Animals don't understand property boundaries. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sometimes it feels as though MN posters would rather live in an empty world with just people in it. 🙄

FrangipaniBlue · 24/02/2021 23:02

I read the thread a while back on this and remember laughing at the idea of training a dog not to wee on a wall....

However....

I tried it with my dog as there is a gentleman on my road who also runs out and shouts if dog's pee on his wall. I watched my dog to see if he was going to cock his leg and before he had chance I just gave a gentle tug on his lead. After a few days he started simply walking past this wall! but then cocking his leg on the next one along instead Grin

I could in theory continue the training to stop him at that spot too, but then it got me thinking, where will he wee?

Those saying on grass well that's fine for a female who squats but males cock, if there's nothing for it to hit it just goes all over their own legs Confused

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 24/02/2021 23:05

I'm giggling at a dog asking for permission to have a wee 😂 "Ruff ruff, wee wee pwease. Sosijis?"

OP posts:
Racoonworld · 24/02/2021 23:07

@FrangipaniBlue anywhere that isn’t someone else’s property?

Saintflop · 24/02/2021 23:08

I don't let my dog wee on or around doorways, cars, bins, or front gardens. But I don't stop him from weeing on boundary bushes/walls (ie separating pavements from front gardens).

This is the general etiquette around here, too.

Sapho47 · 24/02/2021 23:12

Letting your dog piss on some ones house is pretty scummy.

"even if I wanted to stop him, what was I supposed to do, kick him in the nuts? Anyway, a woman stormed out the house and had a real go at me, saying it's disgusting people let's their dogs do that and she's sick of it. I was confused and said I couldn't exactly stop him"

You say stop and give them a pull on their lead. Or is the dog called Wilson?
