Dog pissing on a wall - yay or nay?

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 24/02/2021 15:03

My friend is isolating at the moment due to her colleague contracting COVID so I've been walking her Collie everyday. I'm really not a dog person, at all (though I've grown a huge soft spot for this particular pooch) so don't know the etiquette around public dog behaviour. He's been a little star, he doesn't approach other dogs or people, so maybe I've got complacent with him. Because today he pissed on somebody's brick wall - even if I wanted to stop him, what was I supposed to do, kick him in the nuts? Anyway, a woman stormed out the house and had a real go at me, saying it's disgusting people let's their dogs do that and she's sick of it. I was Confused and said I couldn't exactly stop him. She said he needs to be trained to not do it and if she catches me again she's taking a picture. I told my friend when I dropped the dog off, who just thought it was funny and has never heard of a dog being trained to not piss on a residential wall. I wondered what the MN consensus was - yay or nay to having your wall pissed on?

There’s so many dogs now this is a problem when maybe it wasn’t 10 years ago?

Dogs killed the tree near our house from weeing - far too many of them!

purpleboy · 24/02/2021 17:01

Spot on Emily, imagine being proud of itEnvy just gross.
Quite easy to give the lead a little tug to stop them from pissing on someone's property. Suppose you would have to be a respectful person to do that though.

Nanny0gg · 24/02/2021 17:02

@Porcupineintherough

No it's vile. Keep him on a lead then you can pull him away.
How do you pull a dog away when he's halfway through a pee?
goodwinter · 24/02/2021 17:03

@Nanny0gg you pull before your dog starts peeing, i.e. when they start to cock a leg or squat.

HyacynthBucket · 24/02/2021 17:05

BoiledPotatoWitch
I hope you don't live anywhere near me. You sound totally antisocial, but I expect that's alright because its your DOG.

LST · 24/02/2021 17:09

Christ people must be bored

StoneofDestiny · 24/02/2021 17:09

Crikey - reading these comments suggests the dogs are in control, not the owners.

Pull your dog away from peoples property - not tough. When dogs pee on walls of people's property or gates etc the dog will return to the spot habitually and do the same.

Seriously - let it pee on your property, not on the property of random strangers.

Nobody’s that fast! Jesus, I’m so glad I live in a community of realists. It must be a nightmare living near some of you.

oblada · 24/02/2021 17:22

God I can't imagine being that bothered by a dog peeing on my outside wall. What do people think will happen to the wall?
Car tyres - yes I avoid, cars do have to be handled occasionally at that level. Gatepost similar. But outside boundary next to the pavement? No chance I'd give two hoots about it.
Do people clean their garden wall from birds droppings then??

goodwinter · 24/02/2021 17:45

@VinylDetective I'm just talking about what I do with my own dog when he wants to piss on someone's front door or car wheel. I actually couldn't care less if a dog peed up my wall, so I promise I'm not a nightmare to live near, I was just answering the question.

LakieLady · 24/02/2021 17:58

Male dogs will piss wherever another dog has pissed. No matter how many times they've peed on a walk, they always manage to squeeze out a drop or two when they want to leave a calling card.

Fuck only knows how you stop them.

One of mine once pissed on a policeman's shoe. We were watching an event, and I didn't realise until people watching on the other side of the road.

He also pissed on my leg once, when he was a puppy. We were at a country show and had entered him in the dog show. The people watching found it hilarious. He tried to leave the ring to go and play with some children, and sat down and refused to budge when we were supposed to be walking round

He won first prize in the "dog the judge would most like to take home" category, the clown.

VinylDetective · 24/02/2021 18:04

Of course the PM’s dog is setting them all a fine example, apparently he has a penchant for pissing on handbags.

Boiledpotatowitch · 24/02/2021 18:32

I do live near you actually and dog has weed up your wall/fence/hedge multiple times but you have never noticed have you? Nope well that's because you would never know because it's a wall/fence/hedge not your front door and there is no smell detectable to anyone but the 30plus dogs a day that all go there. My dog has to cock his leg every 90 seconds I am afraid but then he is bi polar as explained on a completely different thread. He cannot help it and it does not effect you one bit.
Nonbio46 · 24/02/2021 18:38

I have no problem with dogs peeing on my wall and I let my dog pee on walls, he prefers trees anyway. However, I never let him cock his leg on people’s bins or car tyres.

standupsitdownturnaround · 24/02/2021 18:56

As pps have mentioned, the local wildlife will do whatever they need to do, and we're usually none the wiser. Why does anyone bother trying to sterilise their house/garden like this?

If dog wee was so awful for humans, wouldn't we all be really unwell all the time? It's everywhere. We don't slosh the grass down with detol before we sit in the park and our immune systems cope. We're animals and we are not designed to be sterile.

I really worry that being neurotic about germs and natural bodily functions is going to cause serious issues for the younger generation - immune system and mental health. Covid has already caused a lot of anxiety. I'd be willing to bet the extra worry of focussing on dogs weeing on exterior walls is way more damaging than the wee itself.

Kids haven't been mixing enough recently so they've not had chance to pickup germs that way. I worry that their immune systems haven't had enough exercise and that parents trying to control things as minor as the topic of this thread is going to lead to serious problems. Not based on evidence, just an idle concern.

Douchebaggette · 24/02/2021 19:09

Could not care less, tbh.

SamVimesFavouriteDragon · 24/02/2021 19:13

Once one dog pees on a spot, they all do, it's in their nature. As an owner, you really ought to stop them! I used to live just round the corner from a town centre. No exaggeration, there was a constant puddle on my doorstep. I couldn't get my pram into the house without rolling it through the puddle, so I was tracking dog wee into my house every time I came in. It was awful. Every time I'd roll the pram in, I had to sterilise the wheels and clean the floor I'd just gone over before letting my baby out, or he'd be crawling through the mess I'd just brought in - vile Envy

KilljoysDutch · 24/02/2021 19:18

I bet half the people complaining about dogs pissing up gates don't give a second thought to where their precious kitties are using the loo. Why the heck are we supposed to put up with peoples cats pissing and shitting everywhere but if a dog does a typical 3 drop marking against a wall you're a vile lazy owner.

Botanicals · 24/02/2021 19:20

Couldn’t care less and it’s bonkers to try to sterilise the outdoor world.

LST · 24/02/2021 19:21

And there we go! Straight to cats as it always goes on dog threads!
CharlotteRose90 · 24/02/2021 19:21

My dog pisses anywhere he wants while on a walk. I can’t stop it and say wait a minute till we get to the park. People are hilarious.

Jumpers268 · 24/02/2021 19:28

I truly never knew this was something that annoyed people. I have 2 dogs and 1 is male and yes he pisses on walls. On the outside obviously. Normally the wall in front of the front garden. As well as shrubs at the front. I don't let him piss on bins or cars though. Really never even thought about it though!

Jumpers268 · 24/02/2021 19:30

Although reading the comments, I need to teach them both to use the toilet.

I would not want this, even on Mr Johnson's wall.
