Dog pissing on a wall - yay or nay?

My friend is isolating at the moment due to her colleague contracting COVID so I've been walking her Collie everyday. I'm really not a dog person, at all (though I've grown a huge soft spot for this particular pooch) so don't know the etiquette around public dog behaviour. He's been a little star, he doesn't approach other dogs or people, so maybe I've got complacent with him. Because today he pissed on somebody's brick wall - even if I wanted to stop him, what was I supposed to do, kick him in the nuts? Anyway, a woman stormed out the house and had a real go at me, saying it's disgusting people let's their dogs do that and she's sick of it. I was Confused and said I couldn't exactly stop him. She said he needs to be trained to not do it and if she catches me again she's taking a picture. I told my friend when I dropped the dog off, who just thought it was funny and has never heard of a dog being trained to not piss on a residential wall. I wondered what the MN consensus was - yay or nay to having your wall pissed on?

@Level32

I don't want cats or dogs pissing anywhere near my property or garden. That's why I've never owned either. Wildlife is unavoidable. Not much I can do about that. But I certainly don't want extra piss from your animals.
Unlucky.
ABitOfAShitShow · 24/02/2021 19:34

Couldn’t get worked up over it, to be honest. Feels like a load of fuss about fuck all.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 24/02/2021 19:37

Ok so to answer some questions

  • The dog was on a lead
  • it was someone's wall, next to their garden, so not their actual house
  • he cocked his leg then pissed straight away surely if I pulled him away the wee would go everywhere? And I don't know the signs to looks out for, he's not my dog
  • I literally can't avoid paths next to people's houses. My friend's house is slap bang in the middle of a large residential area, about a 1/4 mile from the woods where I eventually take him. To avoid paths and walls would mean us having to levitate
  • i don't think I'd notice much less care if a dog pissed on my garden wall.

Oh and I think it was a proper wee, it was a long one

On the walk between my house and the park, there is a house which has a small front garden bordered with heather. There’s a man who lives there (definitely not NT, he’s probably late 40s and lives there with his mother, all the curtains and blinds are always shut). He goes fucking apeshit if any dogs piss on his heather, the problem is it’s just crying out to be pissed on, it’s the perfect height for a dog to cock its leg on. The second problem is that because of the first problem, ALL the dogs piss on it, which amplifies the problem because other dogs want to mark their territory on it too. Heather Man as my friend calls him spends his life waiting for dogs to come along and then he will burst out of his house shouting like crazy if he catches one pissing on his heather. I think life’s too short for that, he’d be better off putting a little fence around his heather if it’s such a problem for him.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 24/02/2021 19:44

As an owner, you really ought to stop them!

I'm not an owner, I'm doing it as a favour

I try and keep my boy away from people’s walls and gardens but once he goes there’s no way of stopping him, believe me I’ve tried pulling him away but he just carries on, I do carry water with me to rinse any walls down in the summer :)

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 24/02/2021 19:45

@CharlotteRose90

My dog pisses anywhere he wants while on a walk. I can’t stop it and say wait a minute till we get to the park. People are hilarious.
Well yes I'm a bit baffled as to how to have stopped him, not like he told me he was gonna piss

You can train a dog to ask permission before they go for a pee. Mine will sit down and stare at me until I tell him it's ok to go sniff. I generally only let him pee on grass or trees and will pull him away if he tries to mark a spot on a wall.

Jumpers268 · 24/02/2021 19:49

Yes OP, if he's already started and you pull him there'll be a 2 metre trail of piss. Haha. I've enjoyed this thread. And then thinking about the puddles my other dog leaves. I can't say oh hang on I know you need to go, but just wait the 1 mile to the park. Always taught my son, if it's not been raining and there's a puddle it's dog piss so don't jump in it 😂😂😂.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 24/02/2021 19:52

@Jumpers268

Although reading the comments, I need to teach them both to use the toilet.
As long as they're not pooing in the en suite, big MN no no Wink

What an utterly ridiculous thing to get so worked up about. Pissy wall woman needs to get out more (which granted isn't easy at the moment but still)

Kollin · 24/02/2021 19:57

@Palavah

Of course you can stop him/train him not to do it.

Was he not on a lead?

Lol at the training of the dog being the temporary dog walkers problem ... and even if the dogs on a lead it will still stop and pee whenever it likes. What's she supposed to do, drag it along by its neck whilst it's still inevitably pissing?

lillymay84 · 24/02/2021 19:58

Oh my goodness. How precious! What's the wall made out of... bloody gold plated bricks? To challenge a stranger over this... she sounds unhinged. I can't believe she threatened to take a photo. Like what is she going to do with a photo... send it to the police? Lol.

No. Yanbu but you will not get a balanced answer here on MN. People lose their common sense on here when it comes to dogs, and cats, for that matter. Honestly I would just give that lady's house a wide berth in future to prevent any further conflict. Don't let it stop you from enjoying your walks with your friend's collie.

That being said, I have got a feeling that this may be a reverse? I see the OP a lot on these kinds of threads usually condoning the dog and it's owner. I do apologise I am wrong about that.

Covidcorvid · 24/02/2021 20:03

I wouldn’t let my dog do it. She is absolutely trained to know where she can and can’t wee. She knows on our regular walks where she can stop and sniff and wee and where she can’t. I’ve had male dogs in the past and they were the same.

I don’t like dogs pissing on my wall. Plenty of owners seem to think it’s fine to let them saunter a couple of foot up my drive on the lead and piss up the hedge which runs along the side of my house. I don’t go out and scream at them though but it does annoy me a bit. Which I know is probably daft and it all gets washed away.

SamVimesFavouriteDragon · 24/02/2021 20:03

Sorry, I should have been clearer that I was really replying to all of the owners on the thread who basically said 'tough'!
I do think you can tell when a dog is about to wee though, as they usually cock a leg or squat. If a dog is about to go in a silly place, I would usually say 'wait' and get them to move somewhere else - even just a metre away would make a big difference!

Bananaman123 · 24/02/2021 20:05

God better things in life to worry about eh, what she going to do with a picture shame him on facebook? Dogs piss on my wall all the time as its close to the woods where they are walked, couldnt care less

WannabemoreWeaver · 24/02/2021 20:06

Dont care about walls. Had someone let their dog piss on my door which was really disgusting. But a wall? No, I wouldnt be bothered.

extentioncord · 24/02/2021 20:06

Oh my goodness. How precious! What's the wall made out of... bloody gold plated bricks?

I don't think it matters what the wall is made out of. It's the piss that's the problem.

Supmama · 24/02/2021 20:08

Doesn't she know rain will wash it off?! We have enough of it 🙄

Boxtroll · 24/02/2021 20:09

I think she's just getting herself wound up over something small. Unless she eats her dinner off the wall, I don't really see a problem

Supmama · 24/02/2021 20:09

Dog poo is boils my blood..or rather the owners that never pick it up!

lillymay84 · 24/02/2021 20:10

This is indicative of the madness of MN when it comes to dogs. Dogs sometimes piss on walls, lamp posts, ect. That's what dogs do. It's not out of control nor it is going to harm anyone or anything. My dog pisses and poops wherever she fancies. I pick it up. End of. Crazy people on this thread. Just let your dog be a dog. Jeez.

Thats the craziest thing I've read in a long time. Poor dog, he can't even be a dog when he needs a piss. I'm all for training dogs and I've trained mine pretty well I'd say but that is literally taking the piss.
MrsMercedes · 24/02/2021 20:27

i'd happily pose for that picture!!

stupid woman
