You don’t have to hang your clothes up!

Okay everyone else has known this a long time. I’ve spent years with a rail and mess at the bottom of a very large wardrobe space.

All through childhood I was told off for not hanging my clothes, the only draws I had were stiff painted vile things I had to use every ounce of childhood strength to open. (So I never did) was a very messy unorganised child surrounded by hangers and toys and told off on a daily basis.

I posted previously about getting the council house and being able to be freed from a psychologically controlling mother ( I’ve got learning difficulties, low self esteem and poor mh)

Today speaking to a close friend whose been seriously helping me organise the house, painting and decorating she asked why I was bothering with cupboards when I always end up in a mess. I never buy anything that creases as I don’t iron.

So long winded and bizzare but I’m buying two sets of 6 draws and I feel so free and happy.

Immediately Have been shot down and told I have to hang dresses ect and sent photos of old painted draws by family members...but this tiny bit of life knowledge has changed my outlook on my whole childhood. I wasn’t given the tools or correct support.

What young child wants to constantly hang their clothes...wants the stress of someone opening and checking... has the time with their adhd to concentrate and complete the task! (I’m still undiagnosed but suspected adhd but I’m also dyslexic and dyspraxic)

I’m just in shock about my past and this small thing has basically made me cry with happiness.

I thought you had to hang clothes neatly.

Fuck that!

@WorraLiberty I wasn’t referring to the posters who shared their own experiences similar to OPs but in reverse, or those who made a comment of that kind but also thought to congratulate OP on her breakthrough, but more to the ones who missed the point entirely and just made a big deal about how hangers are so much better/why can’t you just use hangers/etc. Anyway, I may have reacted a little too vehemently - i hate it when I perceive that people are deliberately pissing on someone’s chips. I’ve also only had one night of sleep in the last three and I had to get up early this morning so I might have been just a little bit grumpy at the time...

It’s great you can now do what you want assuming you are an adult since you have a property.

Parents do normally tell their kids to tidy their room and clothes though!!!

Neilyweily · 25/02/2021 17:44

Welcome to the rest of your life and well done for escaping the dragon.

Another handy tip is fold them as soon as they come out of the dryer warm or off the radiator warm and that's it they are ready to wear.

I have a disabled wife and a 5 year old to look after, when my t-shirts come out of the dryer I just hang them on the back of a chair one on top of the other then that's me sorted for the week

Loads of housework is easy when it's yours to worry about

Hope it helps

Good luck xx

Enjoy your life Flowers

AtSwimTwoBerts · 25/02/2021 17:54

I don’t get it. Of course you need to hang dresses, skirts, trousers, it doesn’t mean you can’t have drawers too

That's the nonsense OP is talking about. Of course you don't have to hang any of those things! Will the world end if trousers are put in a drawer? Thats where mine go and it doesn't appear to have damaged society in anyway. Or even my trousers!

BunsyGirl · 25/02/2021 17:59

Much easier to hang in my opinion. I drip dry as many clothes as possible on hangers in the airing cupboard and then move over to the wardrobe. Hate drawers as I have to rife through everything to find what I want.

Your home, your rules and if folk don't like it they don't have to visit Flowers

I much prefer hanging stuff to drawers as I can't be borered with folding stuff! The point is, each to their own and here's to each of us having our own personal choice unquestioned in our own space!

tolerable · 25/02/2021 18:21

yip-fuck drawers.washing baskets are sensational. also..screw in cuphooks..you can fix to wall.beltloopes on jeans,labels(ok,i cut labels off first)but..your house,your way.place for everything=personal a.f

I love this!!

smilingontheinside · 25/02/2021 18:40

God I stopped ironing years ago life's too short. I have invested in a steam genie but only to steam out creases in something if Im going anywhere special (don't use it often 😂). I do hang some of my tops just because it's easier for me to see/grab them. How wonderful that something most don't even think about has given you such pleasure. Good luck going forward 😊

YouLookNiceJackie · 25/02/2021 18:48

@Breastfeedingworries you must feel so liberated! My 8yo ds has dyspraxia and on noticing that he really struggles with coat hangers, we got rid of his wardrobe this week. He had great fun helping me to smash it up! I've bought an electric label maker and have labelled all his drawers. He's encouraged to put clothes in the right drawers but if he doesn't manage it, it's not the end of the world! Life's too bloody short!

sgtmajormum · 25/02/2021 18:49

My son is autistic. He has 90% of his clothes in drawers. They are mostly sports clothes which never crease anyway. Only things we hang up (and by we I mean me) is his school uniform.

Holothane · 25/02/2021 19:06

I stopped ironing years ago I spent too many hours as a teenager ironing stuff.well done enjoy your home.

inappropriateraspberry · 25/02/2021 19:13

I do the opposite - hang most stuff and have very little in drawers. Easier to see it all and any creases drop out.

Keepcountingyourfingers · 25/02/2021 19:15

I feel the exact freedom with food that you have with clothes.

I never eat anything I don’t want to now. After a childhood of being forced to eat everything whether I like it or not, even if it meant sitting there for three hours and eating stone cold food, it was an absolute revelation to be able to eat what I wanted. I’m in my fifties now and it still makes me happy.

newdays · 25/02/2021 19:16

Congratulations!

Another good idea for people who don’t like coat hangers is hooks or coat stands to drape things on. I might put a load of hooks in my wardrobe 😂

Fayelina · 25/02/2021 19:30

Well done OP, your home, your rules. Enjoy the freedom of your drawers.

MintyMabel · 25/02/2021 19:50

You either hang them, or you fold them. Same difference really.

Jaxhog · 25/02/2021 19:57

One of the great discoveries of lockdown is that almost nothing needs ironing!

Weirdlynormal · 25/02/2021 19:57

@flappityflippers1

Well done OP!

I don’t hang either, we have drawers and I refuse to iron. My mum and my FIL are particularly aghast at that, so told them I was very happy to drop off bags of ironing of it bothered them so much - they never mentioned it again 😁

Now THAT is how you deal with the rubber necks. Very good.
Weirdlynormal · 25/02/2021 20:00
