You don’t have to hang your clothes up!

Okay everyone else has known this a long time. I’ve spent years with a rail and mess at the bottom of a very large wardrobe space.

All through childhood I was told off for not hanging my clothes, the only draws I had were stiff painted vile things I had to use every ounce of childhood strength to open. (So I never did) was a very messy unorganised child surrounded by hangers and toys and told off on a daily basis.

I posted previously about getting the council house and being able to be freed from a psychologically controlling mother ( I’ve got learning difficulties, low self esteem and poor mh)

Today speaking to a close friend whose been seriously helping me organise the house, painting and decorating she asked why I was bothering with cupboards when I always end up in a mess. I never buy anything that creases as I don’t iron.

So long winded and bizzare but I’m buying two sets of 6 draws and I feel so free and happy.

Immediately Have been shot down and told I have to hang dresses ect and sent photos of old painted draws by family members...but this tiny bit of life knowledge has changed my outlook on my whole childhood. I wasn’t given the tools or correct support.

What young child wants to constantly hang their clothes...wants the stress of someone opening and checking... has the time with their adhd to concentrate and complete the task! (I’m still undiagnosed but suspected adhd but I’m also dyslexic and dyspraxic)

I’m just in shock about my past and this small thing has basically made me cry with happiness.

I thought you had to hang clothes neatly.

Fuck that!

What a lovely thread (aside from @Skinnytailedsquirrel failed approach at a snarky comment).
Whether other people get or don't get the hanging or folding mechanics, the real joy of this thread is OP finding her own way to live life, unlocking bit by bit some of the self esteem that had been squished. Have a great day @Breastfeedingworries and may your drawers bring you a happy smile as they glide open and shut.

flappityflippers1 · 24/02/2021 08:22

Well done OP!

I don’t hang either, we have drawers and I refuse to iron. My mum and my FIL are particularly aghast at that, so told them I was very happy to drop off bags of ironing of it bothered them so much - they never mentioned it again 😁

niceandsimple · 24/02/2021 08:24

I also hate hanging, but live in a rented flat with huge wardrobes with mostly hanging space, so I bought those hanging shelves from ikea, so that I could fold. Its not that I can't put the clothes on a hanger, its that it is so much of a bother for me that only the clothes that go in the few drawers/shelves that I have end up being put away and the rest stays on the couch until it gets worn next! It is all in my mind, but that still stops me actually putting them away...

billybear · 24/02/2021 08:25

do what you want in your new home be free be happy xxx

LizzieSiddal · 24/02/2021 08:30

What a lovley threat to start OP.

I’ve just had a light bulbs moment. We live in a cottage so the ceilings are slanted in some of the bedrooms and the wardrobes look very large and odd in there. I’m going to get rid of them and buy massive drawers! This has made me so happy!!

LizzieSiddal · 24/02/2021 08:30

Should add, the drawers will fit much better under the eves than a stupid wardrobe which sticks out!

starfishmummy · 24/02/2021 08:31

Immediately Have been shot down and told I have to hang dresses ect and sent photos of old painted draws by family members

And you know what else would take a weight off your mind? Just do what you want in your home and don't tell family members who are clearly still trying to take control and drag you down.

Anna12345678910 · 24/02/2021 08:34

I never iron anything.
I wash and hang up straight away in non tumble or tumble dry and immediately empty and hang or fold. Fast and efficient and then no ironing or fussing about crumbled up items.

LakieLady · 24/02/2021 08:35

@Octane

When I ditched drawers and moved exclusively to rails I was so happy! Hanging clothes is so much easier than folding them and arranging them properly in a drawer. And they are always wrinkle-free.

I never thought people would prefer NOT to hang their clothes!

I agree. I hang t-shirts, jeans, pretty much everything apart from underwear, socks, jumpers and pyjamas.

Zero ironing in this house, except during heatwaves when I wear linen dresses. They look like sacks if they're not ironed.

stampsurprise · 24/02/2021 08:37

I started a thread recently where I was struggling with the Marie Kondo thing of putting clothes in drawers.

  1. Everything crushed to fuck.
  2. Can’t tell which tops are long-sleeved and which aren’t.
  3. Can’t tell jeans from jeggings and so on.
  4. Folding is effort compared to hanging.
  5. I never iron and hanging helps any creases to drop out after tumbling.

Having said that OP I am thrilled for you that you are doing what you need to do. If it works for you, that’s all that matters. It’s a good feeling to know yourself and act accordingly.

My mother wouldn’t approve of my non-ironing but I don’t care!

SoulofanAggron · 24/02/2021 08:37

Congratulations on your new place. Smile So exciting.

YANBU. Turns out I have ADHD. No ironing, no wardrobes. I bought 3 chests of drawers but two of them are yet to be assembled.

meditationsituation · 24/02/2021 08:40

@PyongyangKipperbang

The only issue I have with this is that your family know about it. Why the hell is your private bedroom in your new private home anything to do with them?! If they ask tell them to mind their own business! And by "them" obviously I mean your mother!
This.

It seems you are still in their thrall.

I couldn’t imagine ever mentioning this type of stuff to my family. Why are you still giving them the control??

Pinkfreesias · 24/02/2021 08:41

Good for you, OP. Congratulations on your new home and your new start.

CareBear50 · 24/02/2021 08:41

It's DRAWERS. Not draws 😁😁😁

Quit4me · 24/02/2021 08:41

OP check out the Marie kondo method of folding. Then you can fold anything without creasing! It changed how I store clothes about 5 years ago- never looked back

creasedjeans · 24/02/2021 08:45

Yay for you!!

I bet there's lots of things that will make your life easier if you give yourself permission to do things that work for you, despite them being unconventional.

Enjoy your drawers!! 🥳🎉🥰

PussGirl · 24/02/2021 08:52

I used to hang everything: dresses, trousers, tops, jumpers as I had the hanging space.

Now I don't, so all trousers, most tops and some dresses are in drawers.

Things were less creased when hung, I found, but it's no big deal.

diddl · 24/02/2021 08:54

Depends on your clothes I would have thought-although I realise that it's symbolic more than anything for Op.

The bottom of my wardrobe has boxes of shoes & handbags-no room for folded clothes!

I have some dresses & skirts that could fold, but I think that they are easier to find hung in a wardrobe.

You can do as you want though Op-don't be lead by your family or your friend!

What might help though is stepping back from your family & telling them a lot less-so there is nothing for them to comment on & less chance of them trying to push onto you what they want you to have.

RandomMess · 24/02/2021 08:54

I bought DH a cupboard from his T-Shirts.

It's a huge, deep IKEA bathroom cabinet. You open the door and you can see all his very many T-shirts rolled up. Bliss and better than drawers.

ExhaustedFlamingo · 24/02/2021 08:55

@CareBear50

It's DRAWERS. Not draws 😁😁😁
This is what you took from the OP's post?!

I'm going to be kind and assume you missed the part where she said she's dyslexic.

lottiegarbanzo · 24/02/2021 08:58

Your family sound odd. Enjoy your home.

WorraLiberty · 24/02/2021 09:02

My wardrobe is pretty half and half I suppose.

To the PP who said And for everyone saying you "NEED" to hang certain stuff up - you really don't. You might choose to because you find it's easier for you, but that's not the same for all of us.

You really do need to hang some things up unless you want to iron them right before you wear them.

I have few cotton blouses and some long Summer dresses that look awful after folding, no matter how carefully it's done.

Congratulations on your new home OP Thanks

endlesswicker · 24/02/2021 09:05

Good for you OP. Do it your way!

Meruem · 24/02/2021 09:10

The Kondo folding method is a revelation. I still have a wardrobe, although a small one, and drawers. But after learning to fold that way I can get way more things in the drawers now and they’re easier to find. Plus they look so neat and tidy.

Good for you OP. Have a wonderful life in your new home, organised just how you like!

AlwaysLatte · 24/02/2021 09:10

What do you do with your dresses, coats and jackets though? Don't they get crumpled?
