Coriander is AWFUL

TurquoiseDragon · 26/02/2021 12:28

@LemonSwan

Those of you who have soapy coriander - can you also smell cucumber from a range of 30m?
Yes, but I like cucumber, so no problem for me.
cardibach · 26/02/2021 12:30

Leaf: you are correct. Vile.
Ground seeds: lovely in a curry.

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2021 12:30

Coriander equals freshness here

It’s hard to imagine the soapy thing if you don’t have it

Douchebaggette · 26/02/2021 12:31

Coriander is lovely.

Cardamon tastes like vomit.

Cloves smell like death.

That is all Grin

lubeybooby · 26/02/2021 12:33

I would have agreed with you in the past, and I did my DNA that shows i have the 'soapy taste coriander' gene BUT

bear with me - honestly

I have somehow overcome it. I really wanted to like it and I thought maybe if I could imagine the real taste by smelling it a lot, I make I dunno, make some new neural pathways or something and taste it differently. I thought it was just another of my mad hare brained schemes and wouldn't really work, due to the genes.. BUT I did it anyway and over the course of a week I spent time sniffing the jar of ground coriander and cutting and sniffing big bunches of fresh cut coriander, and then I used a ton of coriander in a recipe after a week and it's still a fave to this day, I make it weekly!

Get sniffing! I'd love to see if anyone else can override it too

God I could swim in fresh coriander (or cilantro, as we call it in the States). I use it by the boatload and love it.

@poundoflard and @bestestbrownies
Coriander tastes like soap for some 4-14 percent of the population.
Coriander haters are people with a shared group of olfactory-receptor genes, called OR6A2, that pick up on the smell of aldehyde chemicals.
Aldehyde chemicals are found in both coriander and soap. Yummy !!

The genetics of liking corinder is really interesting. But I am also one of the people who changed their attitude over time. I spent years hating coriander as devil's soap leaves, but then happened to taste it in one dish that I liked, experimented with it for a bit and now could literally lie on a bed of coriander eating it. Love the stuff.

Love tarragon, basil, all herbs.

Licorice, however, is another matter. No amount of trying can get me even close to liking this devil's poo.

That's interesting.

I’ve never thought coriander smells like soap , I must be in the other 80 odd percent.

Just smells like fresh herbs to me.
