And has no place in a salad?

AIBU?

It's a genetic thing.

Some people have a specific gene which makes it taste like soap, it doesn't taste like that to everyone else.

Flapjak · 23/02/2021 17:48

Love coriander, like to eat it on its own sometimes

CandyLeBonBon · 23/02/2021 17:49

I love both coriander and parsley. Tarragon on the other hand can die in a grease fire.

user1495884673 · 23/02/2021 17:49

Coriander taste is governed by whether you have a particular gene that makes it taste like soap which is why there is such a divide on whether it tastes nice or not.

LadyCounterblast · 23/02/2021 17:49

I put it in cooking, but I wouldn't use it in a salad.

LoveFall · 23/02/2021 17:49

I have heard you either love it or hate it. It is genetic. To about a quarter of people it tastes like soap. I am lucky and really like it. Just bought a packet of seeds to grow on the balcony.

Coriander is so good, one of my favourite meals is Açorda which is basically coriander soup with a poached egg. Not sure about it in a salad though.

TSSDNCOP · 23/02/2021 17:51

It is utterly vile. Before lockdown I reached the point of saying “no coriander please” in Indian and pizza restaurants. I agree the split is dramatic between the lovers and the haters, but it should be served as a garnish in a pot rather than your tikka turning up wearing the evil green wig.

claireb7rg · 23/02/2021 17:52

you are not wrong, its grimmer than grim

TurquoiseDragon · 23/02/2021 17:52

@BestestBrownies

It’s genetic as to whether you like coriander/cilantro or get an overwhelming (and revolting), soapy/perfume taste from it.

I fall into the latter camp and HATE the vile stuff

This. A good proportion of us can't taste it as anything other than vile.

DD and I are the same, DS seems to be able to taste it as nice.

I use a mix of parsley and tarragon when coriander is in a recipe.

BestestBrownies · 23/02/2021 17:53

@Lilbas That would be the only food available in my personal hell (minus the poached egg of course). Still, I’d be skinny as fuck so every cloud...

CypressSwampmaiden · 23/02/2021 17:54

Since it ruins the taste for a lot of people, I think it's a bad choice to automatically include it in food that's intended for the masses. Even if one likes coriander, food still tastes good without it. Why ruin it for the ones who are genetically predispositioned to find it disgusting?

Different of course if you're preparing your own food or it's something where it's very obvious it includes coriander and can be avoided.

AllHallowsEve14 · 23/02/2021 17:54

I love it!

Sexnotgender · 23/02/2021 17:55

YABU. Coriander is delicious.

MrsMonkeyBear · 23/02/2021 17:55

Love it in my house. I make chimichuri for steaks, throw it in curry and soups, sprinkle it onto salads. I use it more than parsley, now that tastes like dirt!!!

Lightningrain · 23/02/2021 17:56

YABU. I think it really finishes off a curry.

I’m not too sure it’s wholly genetic as I didn’t like it until about 5 years ago.

Still not a fan of parsley or dill however.

Hesma · 23/02/2021 17:56

Tastes like soap to me but apparently that’s a genetic thing and some freaks people actually like it 😱

Yebanksandbraes · 23/02/2021 17:57

OMG, I absolutely love coriander. It's like the human equivalent to catnip to me 😁

RamblingFar · 23/02/2021 17:57

I'm allergic to it. Really hard to avoid it too as it's sprinkled on so much these days

ivykaty44 · 23/02/2021 17:57

"I think it really finishes off a curry."

It sees mine straight into the bin. Can't get more finished off than that. Vile substance

That's so interesting! I never knew that. I love coriander.

You said that so much better than I ever could

Die tarragon die!

I like it in curries just not in salads so I am not being unreasonable! Grin
