Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

You should come to Sweden OP. We don't have pizza with chips. We have chips pizza!

Wouldn't normally serve two lots of carbs, BUT I would have chips with a pie and something like roast potatoes or wedges with salmon en croute.

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 10:40

@Lynora

If I ever open my own bakery I will sell sausage en croutes to the pretentious foodies. 😂
GrinGrinGrin

Anyone remember the sausage roll sandwich on secret eaters a few years ago? I could eat one of those right now.

MyCatLovesFish · 23/02/2021 10:40

Who cares?

intheenddoesitreallymatter · 23/02/2021 10:41

I know, let's stick them to a pyre and let the fatties burn.

Get a hold of yourself.

The en croute is unnecessary, just have braised salmon. But you have it because it's nice, potatoes are nice - they are also cheap and filling and a guarantee for kids to eat.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 23/02/2021 10:41

Green veg doesn't "fill you up". It has a high water content and is digested quickly.

It really depends in the amount of pastry and type. Some pastry is very fatty but has less actual carbohydrate than you might expect. If you are serving it with low carb green veg, some people might find that quite a low carb meal and many people don't feel well on extremely low carbs. Everyone is different. Carbohydrates aren't all bad - evidence shows that in terms of weight long term it really doesn't matter where your calories come from, it's the amount of calories you consume.

Balance is good. Go and give your judgey pants a tug down, hoiking them up that far will give you a wedgie.

OllyBJolly · 23/02/2021 10:41

I could have potatoes three ways with every meal.

However, I have never found anything en croute to be at all pleasing. Salmon or steak wrapped in pastry? No thanks! Prefer it naked.Pies are different- a lovely flaky pastry on top of a rich stew is heaven.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/02/2021 10:41

@majesticallyawkward

Unnecessary carbohydrates

Nope, not getting it. Those words do not go together. I have never met a carb and felt it unnecessary.

Tried low carb once, it was the most miserable 2 days of my life. Never again

Same😂 I still have the expensive stuff I bought like psyllium husk and xantam gum and whatnot😂😂😂 (The former is handy though)
Defiant · 23/02/2021 10:41

Demonising food groups is disordered eating.

Carbs are the main source of energy for the human body, we need them.

All that green veg you're eating alongside your pastry has CARBS.

People don't get fat from consuming too many carbs. It's about calories. You can lose weight eating nothing but chips and garlic bread so long as you consume fewer calories than you burn!

That looks so good.

The Real Greek to an amazing kebab thing in a thick pitta filled with chips as well. I would kill for one right now.

@BarbaraofSeville

Quadruple carb menu du jour

Macaroni cheese pie with chips and garlic bread

Traditional Cornish meat and potato pastie with chips and beans

Lasagne, chips, garlic bread and mac n cheese bites

All served with suet pudding and custard for afters

That should set the OP and all the other carb fearers off rocking in a corner.

PLEASE CAN I COME?! PLEASE CAN I COME?!

They all sound banging.

midnightstar66 · 23/02/2021 10:43

Still no answer to the question of what garlic bread can be eaten with if not pasta I see... somebody did suggest it as a starter, but I didn’t see what difference that makes...it’s still ‘with pasta’ if pasta is your main course, isn’t it?
Anyone got any ideas?
I had it with baked camembert a couple of days ago. It was a carby gooey cheesy heaven

Ah yes I've had that as a starter and then eaten less of the main as a result, I'd not have garlic bread as a starter on its own as why eat it dry on its own when I can come as a side and be dipped in the sauce. I do like it one a cheese/meat board platter though - garlic ciabatta is Devine spread with a nice pate 😋

Inpersuitofhappiness · 23/02/2021 10:43

@cricketmum84

Unfortunately I have to eat very low carb for health reasons.

You are all being vvvv unreasonable to make me crave all the carbs with your triple carb meals Grin

Me too! I'm sat here watering at the mouth, wondering how much carb I could get away with right now! Ugh.
MsRinky · 23/02/2021 10:44

I really miss the hangover-busting lunch of macaroni pie in a bun with chips of my student days. Irn-Bru on the side for some extra sugar carbs. Tunnocks teacake for afters. Right as rain in no time.

TheOrigRights · 23/02/2021 10:44

We don't have two lots of carbs in the same meal, it's one of the joys of having a pie; you don't need to do spuds or rice or whatever.

checkingforballoons · 23/02/2021 10:44

‘Memory of a cucumber’ has made me laugh a bit too much.
I also feel the need to confess. I was miserable and hormonal last night so I made a crisp sandwich. Salted butter on two slices of thick white bread, ready salted crisps. It was glorious.

Noshowlomo · 23/02/2021 10:45

My meals are carbs with carbs and then stodgy carbs

Yabu, carbohydrates are delicious.

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 10:45

I like garlic bread with chilli and rice. Or shepherds’ pie.

please can I have a generous helping of peas and sweetcorn with items 1 & 3 to make quintuple carb? (jam roly poly for me please)
joystir59 · 23/02/2021 10:45

Burger and chips. Can't stand a burger bun and chips

fashu · 23/02/2021 10:45

I get stressed when people eat rice with Naan.
I mean I DO eat naan and rice in the same meal but it goes through me when people put rice on their naan! I eat the curry first with naan and then pour the rest of the curry on my rice.

SaucyHorse · 23/02/2021 10:45

Yeah and why does a burger always come with chips when the bun is already made of bread? How unnecessary. shakes head sadly

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/02/2021 10:46

@Shantotto

Ooh yay a competitive under-eating thread!
PattyPan · 23/02/2021 10:46

I would consider pastry more a serving of fat than a serving of carbs tbh.
