Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

Personally, I plan to dine on a cheeky glance at the lawn and a drop of rainwater freshly caught on its way down my window. There's absolutely no need to be indulging in either protein or carbs.

unmarkedbythat · 23/02/2021 15:39

It is because it is covered in pastry that you have [n]o choice with

I think you probably have the choice as to whether or not you buy it in the first place.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 23/02/2021 15:40

I'd give you a biscuit but there are too many carbs !!!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 23/02/2021 15:42

Jaaaaaaysus who gives a fuck.

Today I had a crisp sandwich between delivering Zoom lessons to pupils.

I don't know anyone who even thinks about these things beyond getting 5 fruit and veg a day.

ConorMasonsWife · 23/02/2021 15:43

I bloody love double carbing. Sometimes even triple carbing. What's my eating got to do with you? Smile

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 23/02/2021 15:44

Just a genuine question from someone who sees the effect of diet on people's health day in, day out.

I highly doubt that people are having to have the sides of their houses removed just to nip to the shop because they are some potatoes with salmon.

It's FAR unhealthier in the long term to have complexes about food and food groups

midgedude · 23/02/2021 15:46

Surely it depends on how much pie and how many potatoes? Potatoes are simple cheap way to make expensive ingredients go further

SquirtleSquad · 23/02/2021 15:46

How worrying that a front line health care professional has that sort of distorted view on food, lifestyle and obesity.

Me too.

When I make lasagna I make chips and garlic bread too and dip both my carbs in the bastard thing. It tastes amazing, it's the perfect accompaniment to an unclenched bum.

And no I'm not overweight, not even close, I'm a size 10 with a big appetite, a fast metabolism and and lassiez-faire approach to potatoes.

Oh it's quite obvious. You, and the rest of us carb fiends, are running the nhs into the ground with our despicable ways.

Now I want lasagne with garlic bread but can't make either due to shielding DH and no delivery till the end of the week. Great!

nokidshere · 23/02/2021 15:48

@SmidgenofaPigeon Don’t you ever have crisps with sandwiches

Crisps WITH sandwiches? The only way to eat crisps is IN the sandwich Grin

Oohhh or mashed potato butties - the food of the gods

ToDoListAddict · 23/02/2021 15:52

@2021WillBeMyBitch

What about garlic bread being served with lasagne AND chips?

Yum 😋

@2021WillBeMyBitch OMG I could so eat that right now 🤤
TwunchOfBats · 23/02/2021 15:55

Pizza/pasta with garlic Fred is a no-no

Who's garlic Fred and why is he coming to dinner? Grin

VettiyaIruken · 23/02/2021 15:57

🤷‍♀️ nobody needs salmon en croute full stop. What's wrong with mackerel and carrots?

It's ok to want to have a meal of your choice, even if it has more carbs than someone else would choose to eat.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 23/02/2021 15:59

May I heartily recommend the lasagna sandwich too 🤤

ChristOnAPeloton · 23/02/2021 16:00

That’s what we call him here TwunchOfBats Smile

He’s allowed round for dinner when we have Greek salad too. He goes lovely dipped in that tangy tomatoey slop you get at the bottom of the bowl.

He’s not even allowed over the threshold if we have pizza tho. Bread with bread.... just nopey nope. Coleslaw and crudités on the side with pizza here.

I seriously doubt the effects you see are down to someone having boiled potatoes with their salmon en croute.
I often double carb. I am thin, fit and healthy because I don’t eat more calories than I burn and because I do regular exercise, and because I am lucky enough not to have a medical condition that affects my weight or a mental health condition that means I struggle with food for any reason.
Anyway, off to make curry, rice and naan for dinner!

MrsKoala · 23/02/2021 16:03

I serve Salmon en croute with buttered new potatoes, steak and onion pie with mash, and beef Wellington with dauphinois potatoes (all with buttered green veg too of course). If you have the middle slice there isn’t —anywhere near— enough pastry and you’d definitely need extra spuds.

The thing I find odd is serving potatoes 2 ways, like mash and roasts (although from what I understand that tradition started with smaller ovens and bigger families), or fish cakes made with mash and then chips/new pots on the side. But I know lots of people who do and they seem quite sane and normal in all other ways so I’ll let them off.

I am usually a low carber, but that’s just because I feel sluggish and bloated, loads of people don’t and I envy them. Double or triple carbs are a delicious combination, just sadly not for me too often. (Thinking of Bombay aloo, pilau rice and naan bread all together - sigh)

JaneJeffer · 23/02/2021 16:04

I don't like spuds and pastry together. They don't complement each other. However spuds and pasta are delicious together.

Thomasina79 · 23/02/2021 16:08

Well I love potatoes, roasted, cheesy mash, jackets with butter, cheese and beans, or tuna, and those lovely New Jersey ones with butter. Yum.

I can see I have issues with butter and cheese. Does that mean I might go to prison?

Each to their own!

SpilltheTea · 23/02/2021 16:09

Excess calories make you fat, not carbs.

Choppingandchanging · 23/02/2021 16:10

If that's the case, why sneer at the potatoes rather than the pastry? The pastry is higher in calories and lower in nutrients. Fat has 9 calories per gram iirc (it's a long time since school) and carbohydrate 4. So if obesity really is your concern, you'd be better to spend your time fretting about people buying salmon en croute rather than a piece of salmon. It's an excess of calories which makes people fat.
