Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

For one reason, it is sold in fixed portion sizes and people tend to finish what is on their plate.

You buy your salmon en croute? With all the unnecessary additives that comes with buying a ready made convenience food? Goodness OP, if you made your own, it would be so much better for you. Maybe you could try to cut down on convenience foods, it'll help the NHS in the long run.

ScepticalBandicoot · 23/02/2021 13:42

Am I the only one who finds the (overuse of) the word "carbs" annoying? Caaaaaaaaarbs. They're just different kinds of food. Starchy food, if you must. Calling them "carbs" always makes it sound as if everyone is on some sort of weird food-by-numbers kick.

MacDuffsMuff · 23/02/2021 13:44

"Pick veg you like then"

I pick potatoes.

@00100001 🤣🤣🤣

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 13:44

Never tried that, but Pot Noodle sandwiches..? Oh yes!

Beef super noodles are the king of sandwich fillings. I spent a lot of time as a student researching this.

DeeCeeCherry · 23/02/2021 13:46

"salmon en croute" ooooh

I'm having Cod d'Mer & pan-fried medium Potato strips with a mere dash of Himalayan salt, tossed in vinegar tonight

aka Fish n Chips

I might even have a jacket potato later in the week but I'm afeared The Food Police may come for me👀

DrCoconut · 23/02/2021 13:47

Some of this stuff is making me hungry. I sooo wish I could eat gluten now Sad (it's medical not a fad diet).

*I get stressed when people eat rice with Naan. I mean I DO eat naan and rice in the same meal but it goes through me when people put rice on their naan! I eat the curry first with naan and then pour the rest of the curry on my rice*

Why do you care what order other people eat their meals? DD mixes her curry and rice together then spreads it on her naan like a pizza topping. I like to alternate between a mouthful with rice and dipping the naan. There's no set way you must eat it!

yes, no set way to eat it, but I just said it goes through me. It's personal preference.

Secondly, the potatoes, judging by the other thread, would have to be slathered in butter to make them palatable. If you are a healthy weight, no issue. But even then wouldn't a extra portion of veg be better for you?

You have to put even more butter on green veg to make it palatable. Plain boiled cabbage? No thanks.

MustStopSnacking28 · 23/02/2021 13:51

I love carbs and won't give them up without a fight! Also salmon-en-croute of a random Monday is extra, unless you have a ready meal version, in which case there's other diet issues....(not slamming ready meals by the way, I love those too Grin)

DrCoconut · 23/02/2021 13:51

All this talk of naan and chips takes me back to Manchester in the 90s. Abduls on Oxford Road or the place on the curry mile that offered special sauce with your carb fest. No one 100% knew what herbs were in the sauce but it made you feel great! Maybe it was just the heady combination of stodge, alcohol and youth.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/02/2021 13:59

I remember Abduls from the 80’s!

ArabellaScott · 23/02/2021 14:04

I haven't rtft, am just hoping nobody has mentioned chip butties.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/02/2021 14:05

I just enat to point out since it's being quoted that people CAN eat potatoes with butter EVEN WHEN THEY ARE NOT HEALTHY WEIGHT! Just don't make it part of your every meal and consider having next meal lighter😁

Lilbas · 23/02/2021 14:10

I love double carbs, there's a cafe I like to go to that does mac&cheese in sandwiches and wraps, delicious!

LondonJax · 23/02/2021 14:11

Apart from the fact that, if you buy the salmon en croute you're getting all sorts of 'extras' that increase the life span of the ready meal, why do you think anything in pastry is somehow better than a big plate of potatoes? There's probably more grams of fat in the pastry than you could possibly plonk, butter wise, on a dish of potatoes!

I know you were bringing up the 'pie and potatoes' being double carbs. But, as an NHS person dealing with the aftermath of obesity, you would surely know that if you bought some nice, fresh salmon fillets, popped them in foil with a little olive oil and/or lemon juice plus sprinkle of pepper then served them with new potatoes and the veg you'd have less fat and less carbs. With olive oil and lemon on the salmon you don't need butter - the potatoes are coated in the little bit of lemony olive oil from the fish.

I just can't get around the fact that someone who doesn't think double carbs is a good idea still believes eating pastry with their salmon is better than some nice new potatoes soaking up the lemon/olive oil juices from a fresh piece of fish.

I often slather my veg in butter too to be honest 🤷🏻‍♀️. Makes it taste better (in my opinion). But maybe I’m ‘allowed’ as I’m not overweight?

There are enough Police about, now we have Carb officers too.

LizzieBirmingham · 23/02/2021 14:16

We need to do something in order to save the NHS in the longer term. That is a given.

I suppose we could consider funding it properly, rather than shaming people for daring to let a carb pass their lips...?

CaravaggioLover · 23/02/2021 14:17

Is it ok for me to continue mixing my voddies 'n' coke ( full sugar) with extra Tia Maria?

My husband also makes epic enchiladas with rice and spicy fries.. is that triple carbs?

How unreasonable. You need to be slugging it back neat or at least adding Avocaat to it for the protein.
OldRailer · 23/02/2021 14:22

Avocaat for the protein, I'll remember that.
