Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

Vegetables are bloody delicious and enjoyable to eat

What a weird blanket statement. ‘Vegetables’ aren’t just one homogenous mass. They all have different tastes and textures. Saying they’re all ‘delicious’ is as odd as saying they’re all horrible. I love some types of veg, don’t like others

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 23/02/2021 13:15

That is my point. It wouldn't necessarily mean a smaller portion of salmon en croute. For one reason, it is sold in fixed portion sizes and people tend to finish what is on their plate

Are you the Dietician I encountered once who made a point of telling clients who made food from scratch that they should stop eating 4-6 portions of steamed, microwaved or boiled vegetables with their lean meat/fish/protein and should either eat solely Ding Dinners or fill their plates with pasta if they wanted to lose weight?

Solina · 23/02/2021 13:16

Carbs don't make you fat. Fat doesn't make you fat. No food in itself makes you fat. Eating more calories than you burn continuosly makes you fat.

Thank you! Flowers @SchrodingersImmigrant

HighlandCowbag · 23/02/2021 13:18

We are having lasagne today. With chips AND garlic bread. Triple carbing to an early grave no doubt, no fucks to give.

SofiaMichelle · 23/02/2021 13:19

Anyone for a chip butty?

DH is making me one right now!

Dp has a round of bread with pizza and makes a pizza sandwich. I kid you not 🤣

DishingOutDone · 23/02/2021 13:21

I love this, 18 pages of meal ideas and an outraged OP. I wonder what they're having for lunch? Ham and mustard on brown air maybe.

Never tried that, but Pot Noodle sandwiches..? Oh yes!

Untrue - Aldi salmon encroute comes in a giant slab that says serves 4 (not in my house it wouldn't) if I'm full I stop eating though.

Joinedjustforthispost · 23/02/2021 13:22

You wouldn’t approve of my carb curry’s then op? Usually my curry’s contain chickpeas, sweet potatoes to bulk them out so I use less meat served with basmati rice! Carbs are life Grin

Joinedjustforthispost · 23/02/2021 13:24

Oooh op you would spit feathers at my dh he is gross he eats pie or pizza sandwiches! Anything goes in between bread here!

Macaroni cheese in a baked potato is one of
Gods gifts... double carbs and fat shocker!

Snowisfallinghere · 23/02/2021 13:24

FFS, this carb phobia has got to stop. Healthy eating is not that difficult: you just eat food, not too much of it, and plenty of variety. Stop going nuts about how many 'carbs' there are on one bloody plate, and just fucking eat... SMH. It doesn't matter if you serve potatoes, pasta AND garlic bread in a massive great big heap on your plate, you will be absolutely fine as long as you're not stuffing your face with a thousand calories every single time. In fact, you could even eat this combination every single day in a sensible portion size, it still wouldn't make you fat and you'd be perfectly fine as long as you're getting variety at your other mealtimes. Hell, I've had Nutella on toast for my breakfast every day for 6 years and I'm slim and healthy.

It's really not that hard. Carbs aren't poison, fat isn't poison, sugar isn't even poison. No food is unhealthy in moderation. Just eat, in moderation, and enjoy food without obsessing about macronutrients.

with extra green veg to fill everyone up
I'm sure there is a mumsnet bingo here.

I'm sure a MASSIVE salad has a place here

midnightstar66 · 23/02/2021 13:27

Secondly, the potatoes, judging by the other thread, would have to be slathered in butter to make them palatable. If you are a healthy weight, no issue. But even then wouldn't a extra portion of veg be better for you?

Well the OP you're referring to, the potatoes were just plain boiled potatoes so you should approve! Also an extra portion of veg in place would mean I'd be hungry again later and snack where as eating some potatoes on top that would do me for the night

Illberidingshotgun · 23/02/2021 13:27

When I was growing up in the 70's we'd have pie and potatoes, sausage plait and potatoes, cottage pie and chips. There would be a roast for Sunday lunch, followed by toast and dripping for tea. Lunches were generally sandwiches and crisps. Food was cheap, filling and tasty. People were generally a healthy weight and anyone overweight was definitely not the norm.

I therefore really don't believe that double carbs = obesity. There days people are doing low carb, ketogenic diets, vegan, intermittent fasting etc etc, and yet the population is heavier than ever.

I don't profess to have the answers, but suspect that stress, more disposable income, abundance of takeaways and fast food, sedentary lifestyles and media/advertising all play a part. I don't think that a family sitting down to salmon en croute with some new potatoes is damaging the nation's health. Indeed, if they are burning the calories through the day whether because of exercise and/or work, this will provide necessary nutrition.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/02/2021 13:28

It wouldn't necessarily mean a smaller portion of salmon en croute. For one reason, it is sold in fixed portion sizes and people tend to finish what is on their plate . Op are you saying you don't make it all from scratch?? Surely you make it yourself, then do variable sizes individual portions dependent on the individuals dietary needs?

TwunchOfBats · 23/02/2021 13:30

Huh?

I grew up in Hull where patty and chips is a normal order from the chippie.

Chips = deep fried slices of potato
Patty = deep fried herby mashed potato

Together! Nothing else.

Now THAT'S a carb on carb crime. Potatoes with pastry is low level carbocrime territory.

Choppingandchanging · 23/02/2021 13:32

I still don't understand what the OP is so fussed about potatoes, but the pastry gets a free pass. Is it because it's 'en croute' so it's not as common as a potato? Because anyone with a basic knowledge of nutrition would tell you that if you're concerned about obesity and empty calories, the pastry should be ditched first.

bathsh3ba · 23/02/2021 13:34

Fill up on green veg? Confused Hmm Grin

This.

OP: boiled new potatoes are neither unhealthy or particularly calorific.

Even if you add a teaspoons-worth of butter (34 Cals) to each portion.

There IS an obesity crisis, yes, but boiled new potatoes are not the cause.

In our house, as it happens, at the moment I would not eat pastry and potatoes because I am losing weight, so I would drop one to create a calorie deficit. The adult and growing males in the house who do tons of physical activity actually need calories and carbs. They do eat big portions of broccoli, cabbage, beans etc, but neurotic low-carb eating fads are simply not appropriate.

Don't demonise food.

UnderCaffeinated · 23/02/2021 13:35

Fucking love carbs, give me all the pasta, potatoes, and rice and I am happy. I would happily give up meat if it meant I could eat unlimited amounts of those foods. I see nothing wrong with double carbs if that's what you want to eat.
