Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

Carbs (and double carbs) are a religion in the UK

Dare to mention that they end up making you sick and the vitriol is real.

Carbs can absolutely be a part of a healthy diet. Some people seem to have been totally brainwashed into thinking all carbs are bad.

Plus, you can be healthy and a healthy weight without eating healthily every single meal time.
@Cheator, i lift, so do my DD's. Protein is better for muscle repair and getting your energy from protein is better. We don't weigh eight stone, I've never met a female weight lifter who does. Likewise female boxers etc are a size 6/8 but at least nine stone. Carbs are useful for calories. When my DD is in full training, weights and Muay Thai she can eat 3000 calories a day. But they aren't the best for muscle repair.

Anyway just a thought @TheOrigRights, how to you have Christmas Dinner or a special beef roast without multiple carbs? I'm from the land of Scouse, which has to be eaten with pickled beetroot/cabbage and crusty bread. How can you avoid multiple carbs?
Christmas dinner and special beef roasts are not regular daily dinners.
I will naturally balance out a meal rich in carbs over the day or a few days.

@ancientgran

You better get in touch with Boris, he loves slogans like this. His new mantra can be, Avoid potatoes, save the NHS.

I'm not sure I could do it to be honest.

Me neither. As I said above, I love potatoes in virtually all forms.

When people give things up for Lent, I think I could give up chocolate or whatever fairly easily.

But not potatoes (or irrelevantly for this thread, cheese).

halvedfees · 23/02/2021 11:35

@midnightstar66

No I don't assume that. But given that at least 40% of the adult population is overweight .... I don't apologise for questioning accepted diet norms. We need to do something in order to save the NHS in the longer term. That is a given.

But do you not recognise that a pie or en croute eaten with potatoes would mean a smaller portion of the main eaten, which is fatty pastry and creamy sauce along with the protein. This could be done for variety or for financial reasons but the end fullness is probably achieved after a similar amount of calories

That is my point. It wouldn't necessarily mean a smaller portion of salmon en croute. For one reason, it is sold in fixed portion sizes and people tend to finish what is on their plate. Secondly, the potatoes, judging by the other thread, would have to be slathered in butter to make them palatable. If you are a healthy weight, no issue. But even then wouldn't a extra portion of veg be better for you?

Can't I have potatoes AND the extra portion of veg?

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 11:36

But even then wouldn't a extra portion of veg be better for you?

Life’s not all about eating only what’s better for you at every meal. You have to enjoy what you’re eating too.

I grew up with potatoes with every meal. I have never been overweight (In fact I'm underweight). I eat pie and mash at least 3 times a week. It's not what people eat, it's how much they eat. The 'dinner' plates of the 70's are today's sandwich plates. Also, cheap carbs are necessary for lots of families - we can't all afford - or want to eat salmon in pastry.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/02/2021 11:37

@inmyslippers

You'll never take my carbs
Is it just me, but shouldn’t that have a precursor? “You can take my pasta maker, but you’ll never take my carbs”.

I'm surprised as a health care worker who seems to think you are clued up, that you think carbs are some sort of issue.

Are you not aware of calories and macros? If you want to start being ridiculous, then if the carbs from that meal fits in someones macros there is no issue with eating it. If they are within their calories for the day going by their tdee there is also no issue. Maybe go read up a bit more in depth on nutrition. Carbohydrates arent the devil. No food group is bad.

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 11:38

I totally agree with you.

So why the judge thread about potatoes with salmon en croute?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/02/2021 11:38

I am one of them😁 I got fat on the huuuuuge salads everyone is talking about here😂

ancientgran · 23/02/2021 11:38

I'd give up the salmon before the potatoes.

MrsDThomas · 23/02/2021 11:38

Carbs with a meal is only an issue if you’re on a diet.

Imagine being at mine eating my favourite meal of 2 fried eggs, homemade chips cooked in lard (yes i do this) and lashings of bread and butter.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/02/2021 11:39

So if you agree, why the thread?

BlooperReel · 23/02/2021 11:40

Don't go to an east end pie and mash shop OP, pie and double mash would give you a seizure.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/02/2021 11:40

Why if you don’t like veg?

Haveyouallgonequitemad · 23/02/2021 11:40

You saying my cookings unneccesary???!!! Wanna fight? Have some cake and sharrrup Cake

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 11:41

Double mash?! Is that a double portion or is there some other kind of mash available?
GaryUnicorn · 23/02/2021 11:42

Anyone remember the lasagne sandwiches Tesco sold a few years back? They were surprisingly good. And there’s nothing quite like a crisp sandwich.

Chemenger · 23/02/2021 11:42

The OP is throwing assumptions around like confetti to justify a very judgy and goady TAAT.

MacDuffsMuff · 23/02/2021 11:43

Apologies OP, you've answered my question.

I still disagree with you, or rather, the condescending tone of your original post. Most people don't eat double/triple complex carbs every day. We might have garlic bread with pizza on a Saturday night but that doesn't mean we do it every day. Self-righteousness is such an unpleasant trait tbh.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/02/2021 11:43

For one reason, it is sold in fixed portion sizes and people tend to finish what is on their plate.

You mean... It's not... Homemade😱
Faints

Okbussitout · 23/02/2021 11:45

@Livy178

When I have lasagne , I also have a baked potato, salad and garlic bread 😄
This made me chuckle I hope its true.
