Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

@Eckhart

Where is OP?!
Disappeared.

She just grabbed a cat by the tail, flung it into the pigeon house and buggered off!

fucknuckle · 23/02/2021 11:11

if you ever find yourself thinking about how to ‘bulk out’ a meal you need to take a long, hard look at yourself.

it’s so joyless that even Margaret Thatcher would think it’s a bit much. just cook a proper meal. nobody wants mountains of
kale to plod through.

2021WillBeGreat · 23/02/2021 11:12

Tbh I never even think about how many carbs a meal has. As a general rule we'll have a main, vegetables and a carb but that doesn't change if the main has carbs too.

endlesswicker · 23/02/2021 11:13

@Fairyliz

I’m with you op extra veg with salmon en croute. Looking at most of these replies you can see why 66% of the population is overweight (don’t mention the f word)
What... FAT? Grin
SquirtleSquad · 23/02/2021 11:14

When I was about 7 months pregnant with my twins I went to a restaurant and ordered macaroni cheese, cheesey garlic bread and cheesey chips. It was a heavenly meal of cheese and carbs.

Einszwei · 23/02/2021 11:14

In Peru they often have rice and chips. In Korea they often have a bowl of rice with noodles. In Italy you eat bread along with a meal of pasta to mop up the sauce. So having double carbs in itself is not that unusual, or unhealthy.

halvedfees · 23/02/2021 11:15

Wow! Sorry have been working. So not a judge and run thread. I am not joyless as somebody put it. I am a front-line health care professional who sees and deals with the consequences of a poor diet on a daily basis. I was surprised with the UK having the highest obesity in Western Europe, the effect of covid on obese people etc etc that no-one seemed to mention it.

Obviously it is OK as an occasional meal, or if you have no problem controlling your weight, but as a regular thing? Do we not need to start questioning things like this, if we are to have any hope of saving the NHS in the longer term?

Probably will get flamed again for daring to question what is perceived as normal Grin

@Whatagayday

I understand. I have this dilemma with quiche.

The solution I have found is to serve quite a small portion of potato with quiche that takes into account the pastry. Rather than miss the potato altogether.

You won't like homity pie then?

It's effectively a quiche crust full of potatoes with a pint smear of cream and is bloody delicious!

midnightstar66 · 23/02/2021 11:15

It would be nice for it not to need to be a thing, but lots of people have to do this of it financial reasons so that comment was a little unkind. I'd struggle to fill my dc up on just salmon en croute or a decent pie without bulking out with something else

GreenLeafTurnip · 23/02/2021 11:16

I can't believe you eat salmon!

LowlandLucky · 23/02/2021 11:16

Macaroni cheese, chips and peas, served in many Scottish households, Yum best meal of the week

SquirtleSquad · 23/02/2021 11:17

Has anyone mentioned the holy meal that is the chip butty yet?

MizMoonshine · 23/02/2021 11:17

Don't police my carbs.

This has stressed me out so much that I'm going to need some tea and biscuits to wash down my egg on toast in preparation for my pasta and garlic bread.

cricketmum84 · 23/02/2021 11:17

@BarbaraofSeville

The best is curry and chips rolled up in a big naan

Our latest lockdown find is a local Indian restaurant that does various very nice quality takeaways and heat at home options as a way of surviving during the pandemic.

The best thing is a 'naan izza' which is a naan bread, topped with things like pieces of chicken tikka and onion bhajis, covered in masala chips and melted cheese. At the risk of being accused of being an under eater, it does take me about 3 days to finish one, but they are massive and I just like to make the enjoyment last as long as possible.

Omg that sounds amazing. My mouth is watering so much now!
SquirtleSquad · 23/02/2021 11:18

Ahhhhh you're a front line worker.. ok op GrinBiscuit

Sillyduckseverywhere · 23/02/2021 11:18

Why are people so fucking anti carbs?
I must be an absolute freak as I'm perfectly able to lose weight despite eating those devil's carbs.
Everyone's a bloody nutritionist these days.
I've never met a happy low carber.

LindaEllen · 23/02/2021 11:18

I voted YABU for suggesting that I shouldn't eat lasagna, chips, and garlic bread as one meal. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life!

Hettsie · 23/02/2021 11:19

Ahhhhh you're a front line worker.. ok op

Probably a key worker too.

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 11:20

Who said anything about this being a regular meal? Or that the people eating it are overweight or obese?
No portion sizes are given either.

You’ve just assumed double carbs means massive fatties.

MOTU · 23/02/2021 11:20

brace yourself OP, last night i had for my tea, veg and potato curry, dhal, with steamed rice, and a couple of chapattis.... it was delicious!

Exhausteddog · 23/02/2021 11:20

I cant get upset about how many carbs other people are eating ...unless they have stolen them from my plate!Grin

OldRailer · 23/02/2021 11:21

I keep thinking posts on MN are tongue in cheek.

letsgoandtango · 23/02/2021 11:21

I want to report this for being a TAAT but mostly I'm offended by the anti-carb sentiment

blacksax · 23/02/2021 11:21

I'm having leek and potato soup at lunchtime. With a bread roll.

So there.

(And no, the population as a whole isn't overweight because they have a couple of new potatoes with their salmon en croute. It's because they stuff their faces with buckets of popcorn, gallons of fizzy drink, umpteen chocolate bars and family bags of Doritos as a snack, while sitting on their arses all day).

oldwhyno · 23/02/2021 11:22

Because of the level of exercise I do, I really need a high carb intake to absorb the booze.
