Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

Where is OP?!

Dressing a quail’s egg with one solitary chive for lunch.

Having garlic bread & pasta at the same time doesn't mean you don't know what a healthy portion is.

YABU, a few boiled potatoes is barely any calories- stop shaming people.

Salmon en croute uses puff pastry- each person gets a bit around their salmon, it’s hardly loads to keep you going until the next meal.

And I’m a healthy size 10, by the way...

@Eckhart

Where is OP?!
Probably eating her one lettuce leaf of the day, then going on a 10km run.
Eckhart · 23/02/2021 10:59

@midnightstar66

just can’t get on board with crisp sandwiches. I love crisps. The crispiness is too much in a sandwich.

If you pair the crisps with a nice cheddar cheese it balances the crunch!

Strawberry jam on white with salt and vinegar crisps is good. If you leave them 10 minutes before you eat them, the jam stops the crisps being too crisp.
Hettsie · 23/02/2021 11:00

Oh no, not carbs

gigity · 23/02/2021 11:01

Probably eating her one lettuce leaf of the day, then going on a 10km run.

and then complaining she's so full up & couldn't possibly eat another thing 😆

OldRailer · 23/02/2021 11:01

In all my years I've never tried any cheese with my crisps. I think I'm too old to change now.

I do love fruit cake with cheese. Wensleydale, Cheshire or Cheddar.

gigity · 23/02/2021 11:01

cheese & onion crisps on white bread with butter is 👌🏼

@HobnobbingAboutHobnobs

Some people would have been shocked at the dinner DH served up last night - stew with dumplings, mash AND Yorkshire pudding! 🤯
Sounds delicious
SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 23/02/2021 11:02

Oh look. A judge and run thread....

Away back to your grass and water. Smile

DoctorBambino · 23/02/2021 11:02

... vegetables are carbohydrates

OldRailer · 23/02/2021 11:03

@ConsuelaHammock so true. They are great nutrition for kids and teens in particular. Much better than pasta imo.

Fiona2020 · 23/02/2021 11:04

@Abouttimemum absolutely. I mean if someone gave me boiled potatoes full stop of be raging!

Ponoka7 · 23/02/2021 11:04

"We don't have two lots of carbs in the same meal, it's one of the joys of having a pie; you don't need to do spuds or rice or whatever."

When I wasn't post menopausal and could eat what I wanted, I loved a chippy steak pie on a sandwich. As for lasagne, we do ours with chopped small, garlic fried potatoes.

I do lower than average carbs, that works for my body now, but not everyone has to watch their carb intake, if they eat in normal proportions. It takes a lot of over consumption for a thin person to get diabetes. It's common in cyclists, runners and weightlifters. They tend to be the normal bmi people in the diabetic clinics, not just you average person.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 23/02/2021 11:05

OP I bet your WhatsApp has been pinging all night with friends trying to arrange a dinner date at yours from 12th April ….

Whatagayday · 23/02/2021 11:07

I understand. I have this dilemma with quiche.

The solution I have found is to serve quite a small portion of potato with quiche that takes into account the pastry. Rather than miss the potato altogether.

Enterthedragons · 23/02/2021 11:07

I totally agree with you OP. I have had to learn a lot about blood sugar due to diabetes and 2 portions of carbs is not good or necessary.

Eckhart · 23/02/2021 11:07

@Defiant

Demonising food groups is disordered eating.

Carbs are the main source of energy for the human body, we need them.

All that green veg you're eating alongside your pastry has CARBS.

People don't get fat from consuming too many carbs. It's about calories. You can lose weight eating nothing but chips and garlic bread so long as you consume fewer calories than you burn!

The biological need for carbs is zero. We can't actually do anything with them except move.

The body uses them preferentially because they're easy, not because they contain essential nourishment.

The carbs is veg is predominantly fibre, which we can't digest, so, yes, the carbs in green veg is different from processed carbs.

You can lose weight eating carbs, yes, but the calorie story is much more complicated than the way you present it. You can get fat from consuming too many carbs, and how many calories you burn isn't the same as how many you have to put aside for fat storage.

Demonising food groups isn't the same as looking at the effects of different foods on your body, and making an informed decision.

You are almost as wrong and judgey as OP, but on the other side of the argument.

Ponoka7 · 23/02/2021 11:07

"where is OP"

Shocked into silence. She's glimpsed into a world she wants no part of. Or she's gone shopping, completely rethinking her weekly menu.

Cheator · 23/02/2021 11:09

Double carbs are my favourite.

Jacket potato with cheese and beans
Curry with rice and naan
Pasta with garlic bread
Risotto with garlic bread
Chip butties

I am a size 6 and weigh 8 stone off, carbs are important for energy and repairing muscles after a heavy workout.

midnightstar66 · 23/02/2021 11:09

We don't have two lots of carbs in the same meal, it's one of the joys of having a pie; you don't need to do spuds or rice or whatever.

The problem with this is then you need more pie which can get boring if you like variety plus expensive, potatoes are a cheap and tasty bulker (as long as their are not plain boiled)

geekone · 23/02/2021 11:09

Mmmm chip butty, garlic bread and lasagne, in fact garlic bread and pizza or other pasta. Mmmm you are missing out, but go ahead and deny yourself and feel good about it.

wheretonow123 · 23/02/2021 11:10

I have no problem the OP making the comment. Sometimes we need (or I need) someone to query what I'm doing - I often take sliced bread and make a butty out a spag bolognese and it's probably not the thing to be doing from a carbs perspective.

Everyone can chose to ignore of course - that's the great thing about threads like this.

dottiedaisee · 23/02/2021 11:11

Who cares ! Have what you like with whatever you like!
