I offered my toddler a drink

And a full on tantrum ensued. Crying, throwing herself on the floor and generally distraught that I'd had the temerity to offer something so shocking!!

YABU - I am a terrible mother
YANBU - Toddlers are crazzzzzy

Obviously this is very light hearted. Hoping and praying that this is a short term phase and that her twin sister doesn't decide to follow suit Confused

Anyone want to offer a hand hold or offer advice, equally baffling reasons for meltdowns would be appreciated

You are a truly terrible person, how do you live with yourself? I got into serious trouble with my toddler for peeling a banana. It was broken!

FossilisedFanny · 18/02/2021 15:50

Have you read the cutted up pear thread ? I think it’s in classics.
My dd used to get so upset if a biscuit (that she had bitten into) was no longer a whole biscuit , same with bananas.

Astraturf · 18/02/2021 15:57

Mine used to scream at having a drink but also not having a drink.

Just lots of screaming.

I got her on the fruit shoots and she turned a bit of a corner.

gigity · 18/02/2021 15:58

Oh god my youngest is crazy like this. If you don't chop the apple up lucifer comes out, if you chop the apple yo too soo, yep Lucifer. The best one recently was a meltdown because he wanted to stay tiny. 😆

mogtheexcellent · 18/02/2021 15:59

YABU clearly. I got screamed at for daring to do a poo once. I took photograhic evidence of the tantruming 2 year old and I am saving it for her 18th birthday party.

Anyone with any sense would know offering a drink is dangerous territory.

bridgetjones1 · 18/02/2021 16:03

It's such a joyful time isn't it. She does the best slow motion dive on the floor. Nothing like her twin sister, who doesn't tantrum quite as much (yet) but when she does they like a nuclear explosion.

oh and can we touch on not just offering a drink is damn right foolish, offering said drink in the wrong colour cup is just plain stupid - obviously

God but you're a terrible human being altogether Grin

CuntyMcBollocks · 18/02/2021 16:10

How I miss those days!! My DD had a full on screaming tantrum once (kicking her legs and diving onto the floor kind of thing), because I said her nappy was soggy.

Esspee · 18/02/2021 16:10

I had two boys (long time ago) neither of them threw tantrums.

I remember one friend’s child who did and the rest of us young mums were completely aghast.
Why does it seem to be so prevalent nowadays?

BrumBoo · 18/02/2021 16:10

I wish I could tell you it ends after toodlerhood, but my 5 year old threw a strop yesterday for not having the green cup. His brother had the green cup, but he wanted the green cup. No other colour cup would suffice for drinking squash from. Apparently the cup he had been given was 'too bright'. There's terrible parenting for you, blinding my 5 year old with a red plastic cup.

Is this one of those bitch plop posts?

Toddlers! A spinning tumultuous sparkling multicoloured cloud of ideas, thoughts and feelings with little more logic, understanding or control than a turnip.

I am not entirely convinced they are human until they hit about six years old, more something ephemeral waiting to fully coalesce into a solid stable form.

My beautiful angelic looking little niece, blonde cherub curls and chubby rosey cheeked face included, use to stand there pulling an icky face saying "yucky, pooey, naughty, yack, nasty" when accused of eating the sugar out of the sugar bowl.

None of us were apparently supposed to notice nor mention her stood on the kitchen chair, up against the counter, next to the tea tray, teaspoon in hand...with sugar on it, the sugar all around her mouth nor the fact she was licking it as she spoke.

SuperbGorgonzola · 18/02/2021 16:15

espee neither of your children ever got upset for silly reasons as toddlers? It must be because parents were just so much better back then. Hmm

bridgetjones1 · 18/02/2021 16:16

@BrumBoo 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Well said!!

3 year old currently has strops over EVERYTHING. Main one is he wants to stay 3 forever, but also wants his birthday to hurry up so he can be 4? Hmm

BirdyBee · 18/02/2021 16:17

Mine is currently having a full on meltdown because she wants it to be dark so she can see the stars like now right now!!

WorraLiberty · 18/02/2021 16:17

I remember laughing for ages when a Mumsnetter said her toddler DD threw a tantrum over getting dressed.

She wanted her mum to help her but she also didn't want her mum entering her bedroom.

The result was a full on tantrum because her mum couldn't dress her from outside the door 😂😂

Probably because we’re all completely shit parents.
Itllbeaninterestingchristmas · 18/02/2021 16:19

Toddler "I want to play dinosaurs"
Me "Yes I'll play dinosaurs"
Toddler " Arrgh I want to play dinosaurs, I want to play dinosaurs". Sobs and throws himself round the floor.
Me" Yes I'm here playing dinosaurs"
Lasted a good 10 minutes.
With mine its because he's always overtired as he fights sleep with great determination.
I hope my second is easier but I suspect not

bfp2 · 18/02/2021 16:20

My toddler screamed on the way home yesterday because he didn't want to go home in our grey car, he wanted to be in a green car. Eventually I told him that we were inside a green car and then he just stopped crying. WTF

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/02/2021 16:20

DH is keeping photographic evidence of DDs naked protests as light-hearted blackmail material when she's a teenager.

She's nearly 8 now and is still rather dramatic.

ThatsnotmyBorishishairistoneat · 18/02/2021 16:20

Bad mummyGrin

randomsabreuse · 18/02/2021 16:23

My now 5 year old (2 at the time) was cross because her bread was too big. I cut it up, the world ended because it was now broken. Clearly toddlers want Schrödinger's bread...

I'm very glad that DC2 (who is now 2) doesn't throw irrational food strops as he just eats the food on his plate. However we do get stuck with him not wanting to walk, get in a pushchair or be carried but also wanting to get home out of the rain...
