I offered my toddler a drink

And a full on tantrum ensued. Crying, throwing herself on the floor and generally distraught that I'd had the temerity to offer something so shocking!!

YABU - I am a terrible mother
YANBU - Toddlers are crazzzzzy

Obviously this is very light hearted. Hoping and praying that this is a short term phase and that her twin sister doesn't decide to follow suit Confused

Anyone want to offer a hand hold or offer advice, equally baffling reasons for meltdowns would be appreciated

I didn't put my DD's cutlery in the right position. Terrible mother I was.
@Esspee securely attached children feel confident in expressing their emotions in the "safe space" of their parents' presence. Insecurely attached children, or those that don't feel safe with their parents, tend to be much more controlled at a much younger age, for fear of reprisals. The emotional repression has serious repercussions as they get older.
Very true!!

Looks like the rest of us are doing it right after all..... WinkGrin

DS (14 months) cries every time he hears the word no. This is a new development which I hope doesn't last because the word no is pretty common...

Serenity45 · 18/02/2021 16:52

3 year old niece outraged that the sun was in the wrong place when we had a 'pre lockdown' picnic in our garden. Cue full on sobbing and histrionics while we all tried not to laugh in her face Grin

DareDevil223 · 18/02/2021 16:53

My DS (now 26) was obsessed with vehicle registration numbers as a toddler and once threw a spectacular tantrum, screaming and refusing to get on the bus to town with his gran as it was "the wrong bus". He was inconsolable bless him Smile

1Morewineplease · 18/02/2021 16:54

I, stupidly of course, let a drop of baked bean juice drop onto my youngest's plate and ( HOW DARE I ) forget to wipe it off!!!

Child is mid twenties now and eats an extraordinary variety of foods but NOT baked beans!

Mrsmummy90 · 18/02/2021 16:57

@DennisTMenace

You are a truly terrible person, how do you live with yourself? I got into serious trouble with my toddler for peeling a banana. It was broken!
My daughter also loses her shit if I dare to peel a banana.
SaucyHorse · 18/02/2021 16:57

I think toddlers find it hard to come to terms with the fact that their parents aren't all-knowing and all-powerful. They expect you to be able to both read their minds and perform miracles such as changing the weather, fixing a broken banana, conjuring a biscuit out of thin air.

It's actually quite touching how much misplaced faith they have in us.

Sue81 · 18/02/2021 16:58

I remember one occasion when my daughter was about 2 - the cat had the nerve to go out of the cat flap and she was beside herself!

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 18/02/2021 16:58

Oh I got screamed at and kicked because there was too much water in the puddle she was jumping in. Full on heartbroken howls.

PopcornAndWine · 18/02/2021 16:58

This thread has made me laugh! How funny that @Esspee didn't come back yet...

GirlInterruptedAgain · 18/02/2021 16:58

Not a tantrum, but I do remember leaving the house with my maybe 3/4 year old, taking hold of her hand and she said “ I’m not wearing your perfume mummy”. Yup. Massive wet spot in middle of her t shirt. I miss those daysSmile

georgarina · 18/02/2021 16:58

God, yes. If he doesn't want one, it's essential that he screams and flails to make me absolutely sure it's a no.

17caterpillars1mouse · 18/02/2021 16:59

My dd 2 had a full blown tantrum this morning because she wanted to eat her croissant that she'd eaten 5 minutes earlier but had forgotten she had eaten

SnugglySnerd · 18/02/2021 16:59

Ds has had some corkers but my favourite was when his banana had "gone all small". Yes, because you have EATEN some of it Grin

Same4Walls · 18/02/2021 16:59

You're right it's very cute but 100% misguided. This morning I put my top on back to front. I can't even adult properly, the poor child stands no chance does he. Grin

surfingwolf · 18/02/2021 17:00

Before I became a mum I was dreading the toddler phase but it absolutely my favourite phase so far!

homeschoolingyay · 18/02/2021 17:00

@Esspee

I had two boys (long time ago) neither of them threw tantrums. I remember one friend’s child who did and the rest of us young mums were completely aghast. Why does it seem to be so prevalent nowadays?
I didn't tantrum as a kid, because the default method dealing with tantrums was a clout round the ear from a parent that made you see stars and your head spin. I'd like to think that parenting has moved on since then, and short term upset of a tantrum is far better than the long term damage of 1970s parenting.
Noshowlomo · 18/02/2021 17:01

I’m so glad you posted this... my toddler is being a right knob!! He hates baths he hates getting dressed he hates getting undressed. He hates me and then hates his daddy.
He’s mental.
Good job he’s so flipping stonking!!!!

Whydidimarryhim · 18/02/2021 17:01

My 4 year old sobbing as he didn’t need glasses!!!

Those rose-tinted glasses are very becoming!

Didn't we once see Princess Charlotte have a strop walking to an aircraft and her mother giving her the wagging finger? If it's good enough for them.................................!

hansgrueber · 18/02/2021 17:02

@MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes

I really really want to vote YABU for daring to offer a toddler the wrong colour cup. Bad mummy. Grin My 8 year old sometimes still kicks off about that.
My brother and I always fought to have the green Penguin biscuit.
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/02/2021 17:03

Glad you had two little saints. Now off you pop to Facebook and do your bragging on there. This thread is certainly not the place for it. Angry

MirandaWestsNewBFF · 18/02/2021 17:03

I sliced an apple once for my son. Three years later and the memory of this heinous crime against toddlers is still fresh in my mind

Latenightreader · 18/02/2021 17:03

My toddler had a tantrum because I didn’t hold her hand whilst walking upstairs. I didn’t hold her hand because she ran ahead of me chanting ‘you can’t catch me’... We have also had a tantrum because I held her hand incorrectly and the only solution was to walk downstairs and do it correctly. Sweetness and light after that. Baffling, but so important to her...
