To find it odd that she felt the need to correct me

I was asked how old I was at work so I said 25 as I’m 25 in. July. Work fired then say oh you actually 24 not 25. I don’t see what difference it makes as I’m very nearly 25 so simple rounded up.

OP posts:
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 18/02/2021 13:48

I think you are actually 24, so she's right. Unless this is part of a bigger issue or her correcting you often on insignificant issues, YABU.

Ninkanink · 18/02/2021 13:48

You tell people the actual age you are, because that’s the age you are.

You don’t round up because you’re not doing maths.

LadyDanburysCane · 18/02/2021 13:48

You’re 24 or “25 next birthday” if you must. But you are definitely NOT 25 now. July is months away!

LubaLuca · 18/02/2021 13:48

Why wouldn't she correct you when she thought you'd made a little mistake? She knows how old you are and people don't tend to round up to the next year - you're so many years old until you tick over to one more on your birthday. There's no estimating with age.

Howshouldibehave · 18/02/2021 13:48

This is such an odd thing to post about! You lied about your age and rounded it up for some inexplicable reason and are cross someone commented on it?! They probably thought it was a really weird thing to say!

getmeacupoftea · 18/02/2021 13:48

Wow, some very strong reactions on here! I don't particularly see it as a huge issue, unless it hinders some kind of legalities. I had a baby at 19, and if somone directly asked my age, I'd round it up by a few months to save judgment. (Judgement that was probably never there, but in my head it was). I still do it now to be honest.
My boss, bank, family and doctor know my birthdate, I don't think rounding up by a few months really matters in any other case. My age isn't some big secret either. If anyone probed me further I'd just explain what I have here.

MagnoliaBeige · 18/02/2021 13:48

This is bonkers, as nutty as those people who say their 3 and a half year old is 42 months old Grin

MrMeSeeks · 18/02/2021 13:49

You’re 24, not 25.

purpleme12 · 18/02/2021 13:50

It's true that people who lie about little things, even though they're not massive things, it does make you wonder what else they lie about and if it happens often enough you just don't trust them
My ex was like that

Justmuddlingalong · 18/02/2021 13:50

Will work be taking back your key to the stationary cupboard until July?

horridhorrid · 18/02/2021 13:52

Why did they ask you in the first place if they already knew how old you are? Confused

MissCalamity · 18/02/2021 13:52

Just laughing with all the other posters who would definitely not round up their age at 40 plus, my thoughts exactly!

Perhaps this is done when a baby moved into toddlerhood, but surely not once they're over 4!

My birthday is also July, no way am I adding on that extra year until 7.30am on that day. WinkGrin

Leafpile · 18/02/2021 13:53

I wouldn't think of it as a lie because i genuinely forget how old i am a lot of the time and say the rounded up number without thinking about it. I don't see why it's a big deal if I'm not being asked for an important reason!

I can't see the OP's job asking for NMW reasons, they would presumably just look at her DOB. If employers just asked everyone how old they are to work out their pay, everyone would say they were over 25!

HarrietOh · 18/02/2021 13:53

My ex-H used to do this all the time, make himself a year older when his birthday was months away. I never understood why!

NuniaBeeswax · 18/02/2021 13:54

My birthday isn't until July and I wouldn't round my age up...

Jacketpotato84 · 18/02/2021 13:55

Life goes by so quickly, before you know it youll be in your 30s maybe by correcting you they are trying to say dont wish your life away.
Id love to be 24 again enjoy being young :)

Freshprincess · 18/02/2021 13:56

I’m 49 and birthday is in July. I’m not rounding that up. July isn’t ‘very nearly’ It’s months away.

If I could get away with telling people I’m 24, I definitely would Grin.

TheCovidHalfStone · 18/02/2021 13:58

I round up mentally as soon as the last birthday is behind me, no idea why I guess preparing myself for it, I don’t really consider it lying. I suppose you are in your 25th year.

badacorn · 18/02/2021 14:01

I round up too op - but never when it actually matters.

In the context of some nosey person at work asking me how old I am because they have been trying to guess just for fun, who cares if I round up. They aren't my friends, I don't care about giving them accurate personal details.

Janleverton · 18/02/2021 14:01

It reminds me of my late great aunt. When she was 80 she’d say I’m 81 this year, when she was 83, it’d be 84 this year.

It was always said in a jokey “I’m almost 85 you know” kind of way.

I will be 47 in June. I’m not 47 now. I’m 46.

problembottom · 18/02/2021 14:06

This takes me back. I moved to East Yorkshire from the North West in my 20s and my job involved asking everyone's age. They'd always reply "56..." and I'd write it down but they'd then go "in September". It drove me potty! Back home we'd just say 55, you know your actual age.

Dearymesheila · 18/02/2021 14:07

Christ you can tell it’s some on in their 20s!

This won’t happen as you reach your 40s love - you will cling on to every last hour Grin

Shinyletsbebadguys · 18/02/2021 14:08

@MagnoliaBeige

This is bonkers, as nutty as those people who say their 3 and a half year old is 42 months old Grin
Ooh that's a point . Ok I will firmly admit that I did round up my DC age between 18 months old and 2 years old because I could never get my sleep deprived brain to figure out how many months it was. They seemed older than a year but could never think fast enough because my DC were tiny little evil sleep thiefs love them as I do to remember the months.

So they were nearly 2 for 6 months. I request dispensation from the MN court for this though on the grounds at the time I could also barely remember my own name.

AnnLouiseB · 18/02/2021 14:08

You’re not very nearly 25. Your birthday is months away. Why lie / round up? It’s not like it makes a difference which you are - just tell the truth about it.

SeasonFinale · 18/02/2021 14:09

A PP has hit the nail on the head.

If you are on minimum wage then the rate is higher for a 25 year old than someone between 21-24.

Thus if they have been paying you as a 25 year old your false statement was fraudulent.

Even if you are on a higher rate than NMW if there is any element of insurance they need to pay in respect of you to carry out your job your false statement may have led to them unknowingly committing fraud
