To find it odd that she felt the need to correct me

I was asked how old I was at work so I said 25 as I’m 25 in. July. Work fired then say oh you actually 24 not 25. I don’t see what difference it makes as I’m very nearly 25 so simple rounded up.

OP posts:
StrangerHereMyself · 18/02/2021 13:35

The difference is about 6% of your pay on NMW by the way, not huge but not negligible.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/02/2021 13:36

@Leafpile

My birthday is also in july and i also round my age up sometimes when I'm asked, i don't see why that's odd? It's just easier for me to think of it as "I'm x years old this year" and so when someone asks I'll just say the rounded up number. Unless I'm being asked for some kind of official reason, but in those cases they usually just ask for date of birth.
It just seems a weird thing to not just be honest about. How old are you? 30 Ah lovely, did you do anything special for your 30th? I don't know, it's in 6 months time...

Because there is a difference between the question ‘how old are you?’ and ‘what is your DOB’ and even ‘how old will you be on your next birthday?!

If you’re rounding up, do you say you’re 30 when you’re actually 27 as that’s rounding up?!

Karmatime · 18/02/2021 13:36

My DH does this all the time, I’m not sure if he’s trying to prepare himself for yet another year - he’s in his 50s - or he genuinely forgets how old he is.

HallowedGround · 18/02/2021 13:36

My birthdays on Sunday and you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be 54 until then.

Thumbcat · 18/02/2021 13:37

Sorry OP but you're the strange one. I'm 45 in July, no way in hell am I going to start saying I'm 45 until I have to. Your friend probably thought you were having a brain fart and had forgotten your age, nothing weird about that.

OutingMyself · 18/02/2021 13:37

Because when people tell weird little lies like that about inconsequential stuff it's annoying. It also makes people wonder what else you lie about.

Jackie2022 · 18/02/2021 13:37

you know what, I have come across people that do this. I remember talking to this guy when I was 20, he actually got annoyed that I told him I was 20 as my 21st birthday was the upcoming weekend Confused apparently I should have just said 21

SleepingStandingUp · 18/02/2021 13:37

No way am I doing this, I turned 39 I'm Lockdown so it doesn't even count and when I'm 40 I'm rounding down to 30

MustardMitt · 18/02/2021 13:38

This is utterly baffling to me. My mum used to wind me up as a kid, when my birthday was close and she was telling me off about something, she’d always say she didn’t expect that sort of behaviour from an X year old. To which I’d obviously say I’m not X I’m Y!

itsgettingwierd · 18/02/2021 13:38

How old are you?
30
Ah lovely, did you do anything special for your 30th?
I don't know, it's in 6 months time...

🤣🤣🤣

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 18/02/2021 13:38

Being 5 months off 25, you can't even really say nearly 25.

Bluntness100 · 18/02/2021 13:38

Op, if it helps,

If your birthday is in the next few days you’d typically say “nearly 25”. Any more than that it’s the norm to actually say your age Ie 24. Because that’s how old you are. There is no need to round it up. The actual is the answer.

It’s very very odd to lie like this. Ans I get your pissed off you were caught in the lie.

The question is why did you really do it? I assume you wanted to appear older than you are for some reason?

HOkieCOkie · 18/02/2021 13:39

I’m 40 in a weeks time, trust me I’m 39 until the very last second haha

NewScone · 18/02/2021 13:39

You're 24, or if you really insist "25 in July"

OutingMyself · 18/02/2021 13:39

Even if my birthday was next week I'd probably say 'I'm 25 next week'.

BlueTimes · 18/02/2021 13:40

This reminds me of the thread where someone was kicking off because their mother wasn’t vaccinated because she wasn’t old enough. Clearly she just needs to work on the OP’s logic of birthdays and all will be fine. Grin

Bluntness100 · 18/02/2021 13:41

Love these mad threads, where someone behaves oddly then gets pissed off that they were caught out. 😂😂😂

luxxlisbon · 18/02/2021 13:41

You aren't that near 25. Nearly half a year away isn't "nearly 25". I would find it so weird if someone rounded up their age, particularly in a work situation.
This is like when young kids claim they are "11 and 3/4s".

AndPatraWillNeverSayNever · 18/02/2021 13:42

I don't think the odd part is rounding up your age - people do it. It's having an issue when someone corrected you especially in official capacity. Your actual age may have mattered at the time so saying 25 instead of 24 isn't correct. If it was a social situation with friends, it wouldn't matter.

Next time, you could say I'm nearly 25 or I'll be 25 in July or in 5 months time, if you really want to use the number 25. More accurate and the listener can do with it what they want.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 18/02/2021 13:44

Hah sorry this made me laugh. I'm 41 and I'm rounding down to 25 if I can pull it off.

Either the other person is a fact based person and couldn't help themselves or did just think you were being a bit disingenuous and pointed out you were not nearly 25. Are they older than you because I would find it mildly funny that you were still rounding up, I wouldn't correct you because it was a bit unnecessary but I would smile to myself as I wandered off. Reminds me of my 5 year old insisting he is nearly 10 (because he for skmeodd reason insists he will be able to drive then....not sure where he got that from Grin).

My birthday is July and bugger that that I am nearly 42 , nope.

GrettaGreen · 18/02/2021 13:45

You saying you're 24 = wouldn't bat an eyelid. You saying you're 25 and then hearing you weren't = I'd peg you as young and immature.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 18/02/2021 13:45

You’re 24, so why say you’re 25? That’s just a lie.

I’d have corrected you too (and wondered what else you’d been lying about too)

DaphneDuBois · 18/02/2021 13:46

People round up amounts (eg the cost of an item, the number of guests at a party, the miles on a vehicle, decimals) when an approximate number is good enough. But you don’t round up your age because you either are an age or you are not. You are either 18 or you are not, otherwise you can’t vote. You don’t round up your door number from 36 to 40 because it’s either 36 or it’s not.
