Pancake day - what's the normal amount of pancakes to eat??

410 replies

waitingforautumn · 16/02/2021 18:27

Having a bit of a debate. Family think 6-8 is normal. I have friends who are done after two.

How many do you typically put away??? Grin (hint: make me feel better about the fifth one I'm about to have...!)

Am talking about crepes btw.

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

I'm jealous of you all, I can't COOK the flaming things without them turning into scrambled egg-cake Envy

I'm here to pick up tips. I have told the kids that it's not pancake day at all. They don't believe me.

Don't touch them! Batter in pan. Leave until it's basically cooked through and then flip. If you try and flip too early that's when it all goes badly. And not too much batter in the pan. Unless you are doing American style, which you might find more forgiving because it's thicker.
Okokokbear · 16/02/2021 19:59

How big are the pancakes people eat though? I think that makes a difference.

I've has 2 with cheese and onion. The onion is fried.
Then a sweet one with Nutella and some crushed crispy biscuit things.

@SmidgenofaPigeon

😂 we will have a lot of competitive pancake under eaters because it’s Mumsnet.

I’ll go- I have one, traditional of course, cooked in a tiny frying pan that came with the toy kitchen. But it’s an awful amount of sugar so I actually try and eek it out to the following pancake day next year, otherwise I will put myself at risk of being a size 10 and have diabetes.

Hahahahaha you almost had me for a sec 😂😅

2 for pudding or 4 for a meal

TatianaBis · 16/02/2021 19:59

@FitterHappierMoreProductive

Didn't say you could, but you can from national stats. Not judging so much as genuinely shocked.

It has been a hard year, I don't see what that has to do with pancakes.

Okokokbear · 16/02/2021 20:00

@TatianaBis

Blimey O'Reilly.

No wonder 60% of adults are classed as overweight or obese in the UK.

Oh get to fuck.
PurpleDaisies · 16/02/2021 20:00

Side plate sized because that’s the only pan that doesn’t stick.

waitingforautumn · 16/02/2021 20:01

@SendMeHome

It depends if you’re having them as your main meal or as pudding, I think?

If we have them as our main meal than six or so... today we’re having 2/3 each, because we’ve had Camembert

This is a good point. Yes we have them for dinner too. I stopped at six 🤣

@GalesThisMorning

I had 2 savoury crepes and one with nutella and I am stuffed!! My teeny tiny 4 year old had 4 sweet ones, after eating 2 chipolatas a jacket potato and peas. He only stopped eating because I insisted he take a break.

Apparently some of us are born with a separate pancake stomach Grin

Lol bless 😂

I have not had enough. Made a double batch of batter but clearly the original recipe was written by a competitive undereater. So sad. So tempted to make more.

aLilNonnyMouse · 16/02/2021 20:02

4-8 but it's often the main/only meal of the day. Ours are full plate sized but we do have small dinner plates rather than the massive ones you seen these days.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 16/02/2021 20:02

Lol don’t ask mn folk what they eat. They Licked a pancake with HEAPs of vegetables
No butter
No sugar
A sook of lemon

BoomBoomsCousin · 16/02/2021 20:03

Normally I'd say 3 was a lot. But Pancake day is different. 8 is not at all unreasonable (but it takes an age to cook that many for a family).

waitingforautumn · 16/02/2021 20:03

@MonkeyPuddle

I had two, DS, DP and DSD had 3 each. DS had sugar, lemon, syrup and Nutella on his. Jesus wept. I’ll never get him to sleep now.
LOL how do they do it, all the sugar makes me wanna take a nap

What do people put in savoury ones? Want to try one but no idea what to put in it

waitingforautumn · 16/02/2021 20:03

@justcannotwithyou

Surely that depends on if you have them as your actual meal or as pudding. I would say 2 or 3 if pudding, 6-8 seems reasonable if it's all you're having. But also if someone wants to have 13 of them I don't see what the problem is Grin
Amen to that

FitterHappierMoreProductive · 16/02/2021 20:03

People are describing an opportunity to enjoy a moment of celebration with their families - a rare one in the last 12 months. That’s what eating pancakes has got to do with it. But then you know that, you’re just being obtuse.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 16/02/2021 20:04

Dd won't eat them (weirdo), ds1 will eat between 2 and 4, ds2 will eat as many as I will give him, and ds3 will only eat 1. I can eat 2-3. I make very thin crepes. I make pancakes fairly regularly as a weekend breakfast and when I make whole meal ones people eat less as they're much more filling.

AnotherGuest · 16/02/2021 20:04

We had 4 each. I feel a bit sick now!

waitingforautumn · 16/02/2021 20:05

@Rose789

Crepes there is no limit. Keep going until all the flour and eggs go- that’s the whole point of it so your just being a good Christian. I made American pancakes and only managed 2 with berries and maple syrup for tea and frankly I’m ashamed of myself for being such a quitter
😂😂
OP posts:
MrsKoala · 16/02/2021 20:05

If I have them for pudding then 2-4. If it’s dinner I once managed 27 Shock

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 16/02/2021 20:05

Not judging so much as genuinely shocked.

Oh give over. Do you know the history and significance of Shrove Tuesday?

We should follow the parts of the world which call it Fat Tuesday. It would give some pp a clue.

waitingforautumn · 16/02/2021 20:05

@Georgyporky

Zero.

(a) We're not Christian
(b) They only taste of what is put with them, so leave out the tasteless carrier.

Lol but orange juice and sugar isn't the same without the vehicle...

(Yes, OJ instead of lemon !!)

OP posts:
DrCoconut · 16/02/2021 20:06
  1. But with fruit, Nutella and squirty cream Grin I genuinely can't eat more at the moment because my digestive system is shot due to my ongoing health issues. I'm on a little (ish!) and often regime while I hopefully recover.
FangsForTheMemory · 16/02/2021 20:06

@Happycat1212 when I was little my mum used to sometimes do pancakes with stew and I really loved it. I have had them with ratatouille in, also chicken and mushrooms in cream sauce is nice.
