Pancake day - what's the normal amount of pancakes to eat??

waitingforautumn · 16/02/2021 18:27

Having a bit of a debate. Family think 6-8 is normal. I have friends who are done after two.

How many do you typically put away??? Grin (hint: make me feel better about the fifth one I'm about to have...!)

Am talking about crepes btw.
@LyingWitchinTheWardrobe You need the Delia Smith basic pancake recipe (sorry haven't done link but just Google) and a non stick frying pan. I made double quantities (twice) around 2 savoury and 3 sweet for 5 of us.
Fab, thank you, I'll find it. I just want an idiot-proof, step-by-step recipe. I'm shocking with Yorkshire puddings too. I'm sensing a theme.

I have a good non-stick frying pan; I didn't use it, used a really ancient one which was my grandmother's and (apparently) made out of an aeroplane propeller. I was talked into using it and what a mess it/I made.

Off to find the DS recipe, thanks! Grin

Justgorgeous · 16/02/2021 23:11

I had a bite of my daughter’s one. I’m not that keen of them.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 16/02/2021 23:20

@rainbowunicorn

Why do people like TatianaBis come on to threads like this to preach at others? Does it make them feel important, better than everyone else. It is quite horrible how a few people can derail a thread that started off as a nice chat about something enjoyable.
I don't know why they do it, it's a lovely thread really. I'm vicariously enjoying the pancakes you all had because - until I try the Delia Smith recipe kindly recommended - I can't have any.

As far as husband being a surgeon... well, they would say that, wouldn't they? People like that need to ride somebody else's imagineary coat tails. I don't believe them. We should smile and nod... and eat pancakes and sausages. Possibly not together though!?

Namethatuser · 16/02/2021 23:21

I had two - kids had 10 each maybe more!

SockQueen · 16/02/2021 23:22

For more years than was sensible, my sister and I used to try to eat our age in pancakes. I can't remember what age I finally admitted defeat but it was somewhere in my late teens. Blush

Grumpasaurus · 16/02/2021 23:23

Oh man did I miss pancake day?!?!

Will be making up for this tomorrow!!!!!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 16/02/2021 23:24

Guys, guys, don’t you know WE ARE IN A PANDEMIC?!

I hope we all think I about that now we’ve ensured that the NHS will quite literally buckle under our pancake-induced obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol. If we are very lucky it might just be able recover in time for Easter. We should all be ashamed, unless we had crepe suzette because that is dinner party fare and won’t cause any of the problems that the lemon and sugar types will.

I was at the hospital today for a routine appointment and there were actually posters warning of going too mad on pancake day because of the problems it will cause when we over-indulge. The NHS guideline is one thin pancake per adult, and half for a child, with a pinch of sugar if you absolutely must. Any more and you’re just greedy, no matter what you’ve eaten for the rest of the week.

happymummy12345 · 16/02/2021 23:25

I have 3, all with sugar and lemon. My husband could eat 4 or 5 with syrup and ice cream. But they are our dinner/ evening meal. We don't have anything else to eat at all, just the pancakes.
Ds doesn't like them at all for some reason so he doesn't have any

happymummy12345 · 16/02/2021 23:25

I wouldn't and couldn't have dinner as well as them

BuggersMuddle · 16/02/2021 23:35

Wish I could eat the ~5 I used to but I am much less hungry for starchy carbs these days, so usually 1-2, then convince DH to make more next week (he’d merrily eat 4/5).

This isn’t a virtue signalling post btw / my appetite for cheese remains unreasonable and unchanged Wink

Pancakes are an excellent vessel for cheese.

Sweetie, you can serve yourself less than you normally would for dinner in order to fit a couple of pancakes in that tiny little tumtum.

I also need to ask what kind of pancakes some people have when they say shit like this. I make incredibly thin crêpes as I hate when they're more than about a mm or so thick. That with a dash of lemon juice and a sprinkling of sugar isn't exactly a dominoes XL with a box of wedges finished off with a pint of phish food.

SpicyTinkle · 17/02/2021 00:55

We didn't have pancakes today, but I go to France fairly regularly and eat approx 357654 of a day. 🐷

My fourteen year old DS came downstairs this morning and we had this conversation:

DS - How come you're working today?

Me - Cause it's Tuesday and I work on a Tuesday?

DS - But it's Pancake Day!

Me - Okaaaaay

DS - (incredulous) Do they not give you a day off for Pancake Day?!

Me - 😆

CharlieParley · 17/02/2021 01:15

As many as we can.

Is the honest answer. I prepare about 2 litres of batter for four, cooked in three frying pans at the same time. That's dinner plus leftovers for next day's lunch. Never made them for pancake day before, because we have them regularly. It was fun. Apart from the fact that I had to use five(!) frying pans today, coz two of my them just produced a horrible sticky mess Hmm

Thin ones btw, main ingredient is water (sparkling), makes for a lovely light batter.

I eat them with applesauce. The kids add sugar to that as well. DH likes them savoury.

(Really rather enjoyed this thread. Until the pancake police turned up. I'm just glad they've never raided our house. Glad for the pancake police. No one comes between my kids and pancakes Grin)

Significantown · 17/02/2021 01:52

One for breakfast, English style with sugar and lemon juice. Not a competitive under-eater, I just only want one.

PADH · 17/02/2021 02:30

We made about 2 dozen for the kids to stand back, staring at the heaped plate looking suspicious, with their noses scrunched up because they don't look like the ones up of the sunburst packet. A grand total of zero were eaten.

Sapho47 · 17/02/2021 02:40

"Pancake day - what's the normal amount of pancakes to eat??"

All of them

LunaNorth · 17/02/2021 02:55

@TatianaBis

Hooray for the pancake-guzzling fat bastards, though, eh?

Without them, you might have to had to be married to a window cleaner Shock

LunaNorth · 17/02/2021 02:56

Not sure where the extra ‘to’ came from. Must be the excess sugar causing brain farts.

Sapho47 · 17/02/2021 03:02

"I have a good non-stick frying pan; I didn't use it, used a really ancient one which was my grandmother's and (apparently) made out of an aeroplane propeller. I was talked into using it and what a mess it/I made."

What part of the propeller and how old?

A lot of older aircraft are made from duralium and other copper alloys of aluminium they may not safe for cooking over the long term

haba · 17/02/2021 04:03

Well, I am just pleased that The.Boy.Who.Eats.Nothing actually ate pancakes today- he hasn't for the last six or seven years.
He ate two with cheese in, two with jam on.
They weren't the biggest, and he's rather on the thin side, so hopefully that's ok Pancake Police?Halo

Nitflux · 17/02/2021 04:08

Unfortunately only two. Idiot over here didn’t make enough batter for more, and then couldn’t be bothered to make more batter. If I could have, I would have had about five. That’s my usual standard. Said to DH when our child is old enough to enjoy pancakes I’ll have to rein in the amount of sugar I put on them because it’s really not normal and she can’t grow up thinking that’s ok.

GreenSlide · 17/02/2021 04:23

Boys are allowed, in fact they're encouraged on MN to eat like horses so this should go down well. Bonus points if he's tall and sporty!
haba · 17/02/2021 04:25

He's not- he's teeny because he never eats Sad
He's 12, and still in age 5-6 boxers.

I just hope nobody want to the shop just because they needed pancake ingredients. We'll definitely see a spike in cases in 14 days time and we'll know who to blame!
