Glad we were not coopted into the EU vaccine procurement.

No EU country had to be co-opted.

Insertfunnyname · 16/02/2021 18:27

@LillianGish don’t be ridiculous they’ve even apologised for how the handled it! The EU were about 3 months behind the U.K. in ordering. Do you really feel the U.K. had 3 months to play with?

Thank GOD we were out of the eu shackles and could order our own supplies.

didireallysaythat · 16/02/2021 18:29

Candidates pulled out of interviews 3-4 years as the vote went through. We have seen the number of Europeans who would consider working for us drop to practically zero. We have had positions remain vacant for months, we can't give work/case studentships as they are no longer eligible for funding. Friends have seen grants dry up as noone wants a UK partner in them anymore. The UK is no longer a leading destination for study in science. And this will hurt us.

ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2021 18:35

Lex
A lot of these issues will decline as we get new supply chains into GB and NI.
How?
German made goods have to come from Germany.
Spanish grown foods have to come from Spain.
French grown wine comes from France.
Tea comes from India.
Bananas come from the tropics.

You cannot "supply chain" geography away.

ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2021 18:36

Glad we were not coopted into the EU vaccine procurement.
And when we are all vaccinated,
the damage to UK business caused by Brexit will remain.

Brefugee · 16/02/2021 18:37

Oh Redpencil - you won but you don't sound very happy. In fact you sound rude and angry. Why should someone born in NI leave just because leave voters had no idea what they were voting for?

The EU were slow off the mark with the vaccine, but we'll see how it all is this time next year. I've been banking on 2 years for everyone to get out of the Covid situation so we still have time.

I live in Germany, I have found it really hard to buy Cheddar cheese ( my kids will only eat cheddar no other cheese)

I am grateful every week when we go shopping and there is still Cathedral City in my local Kaufland. But there are now brands of Irish cheddar coming in so i guess they've been getting ready.

We'll see how it goes. Right now there's a lot of mess.

Thimbleberries · 16/02/2021 18:37

Lots of the shops I used to use have just stopped selling to Britain, and the few that do charge exorbitant shipping rates now, and no guarantee that you won't pay extra taxes on arrival.

I notice it with small specific things like bike parts, as well as things like shoes or clothes that were readily available from european sites.

jasjas1973 · 16/02/2021 18:38

@Insertfunnyname

Its fantastic that the UK is vaccinating at such a rate and tragedy the EU isn't.
The EU messed up ordering too late, as i believe they have now acknowledged.

However, the UK wouldn't have been part of the EU's procurement program, we have never been keen on EU wide schemes.

Sunshineandcoffee · 16/02/2021 18:38

Two hours extra work every day form filling for the business. Not teething issues we were prepared and have no more efficiencies to make. Goods that we move worldwide for the last 40 years suddenly "failing" customs clearance to the EU as they are drowning under paperwork too . We are experienced exporters with most countries too

LastTrainEast · 16/02/2021 18:39

At this rate I can see people in the UK being forced to buy from other people in the UK. That will be awful won't it.

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 16/02/2021 18:39

Just cited and the current poll is 48/52 🤨

Iflyaway · 16/02/2021 18:41

my husbands parents got the vaccine super quick - if we were in Europe they wouldn’t have.

My sister in Europe has had hers. And not in a vulnerable group.

"Europe" is made up of many different countries, each who can make their own rules on myriad stuff. It really isn't a "one fits all".

LastTrainEast · 16/02/2021 18:43

"Tea comes from India."
"Bananas come from the tropics."

Pretty sure those places are not in the EU either and probably haven't changed location.

It's not that simple. Plenty of small UK businesses are struggling. Sure we can all buy from the UK, but that's no good if they can't get the stock they need to sell their own products and a large amount of their customer base has stopped buying. Please read @SinkGirl post, this is the reality for many.
LastTrainEast · 16/02/2021 18:46

"Europe" is made up of many different countries, each who can make their own rules on myriad stuff. It really isn't a "one fits all".

But isn't the aim though to make the EU a one size fits all? Isn't that the goal they are working towards? With fewer pesky decisions for countries to make as it is all sorted out for them.

It is surely the philosophy behind having an EU in the first place.

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 18:46

@ListeningQuietly

I'm not saying it is optimal. But I think this government would not have done half the things it did if was interested in building any trade with EU countries. I understand that this builds costs and difficulty - but really, the message of Brexit is "don't trade with the EU". The government is working quite hard to loosen those ties further. I am a remainer but I am not foolish enough to imagine that there will be a reversal of what has happened any time soon or within the next decade. We are going to diverge more and more from the EU. That is the aim for a lot of Brexiteers. And they are in charge of this.

I didn't want Brexit at all but business will adapt. What's the point in moaning about it? We won't be rejoining any time soon.
snowydaysandholidays · 16/02/2021 18:47

Nothing at all. I order Italian clothes online, all have turned up as normal. I can't see any difference whatsoever, and I am not really expecting to now.

I am so glad it is over and done with now more than anything. I am sick of it. Happy to never hear or see the word ever again.

Iqqq · 16/02/2021 18:48

We work on life safety systems for many hospitals and are struggling to get spare parts. Without these parts, hospital wards will start to be shut down as they can't operate without the systems being operational.

AintPageantMaterial · 16/02/2021 18:49

@redpencil77There’s always fruit picking. But I suppose that’s not good enough for your precious little one

My “precious” little one works as a cleaner to support herself through university. Neither she nor I think she is too good for any kind of work but she she had arranged internships in Europe to give her a grounding in the sector she wants to work in and now those offers have been withdrawn thanks to racists, liars and racist liars.

lulalalala · 16/02/2021 18:50

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale

I've unsubscribed from boden mailing list. Will no longer order anything from the Uk as if it costs more than 8 quid including packaging I have to pay VAT (no big deal) and a handling charge of 20 quid. So a book that costs £9 from book depository will cost me 41.

Have changed amazon settings to .de.

If I travel I now need extra documents.

This is almost how I feel re all the French, Dutch and Danish companies whose mailing lists I am on. It's sad as I love these brands and used to buy stuff from them regularly. The cost of VAT and custom charges is really off putting and makes me think twice.

Also I've had to tell one of my closest friend's who lives in France (is French) not to send me any more presents for me or the kids (and for her vice versa) because of the custom charges/VAT. She sent me a parcel for my birthday (before Xmas) which arrived between Xmas and NYE (so later than expected). It had 2 bottles of wine and some crafty bits for the kids. If it'd had been even later we would've had to pay VAT and customs clearance on it Sad.

We've been friends for over 20 years and met on an Erasmus scheme between our two universities. Gutted for my children that they might not have these same chances.

For me personally I am yet to see the positives of Brexit!

ZenNudist · 16/02/2021 18:50

Bought ds birthday present off playmobil UK site. Turned out it was coming from the EU. Took weeks and eventually DHL told us we could have it if we paid £35 customs charges. Still trying to sort out the return. Ds birth day was end of Jan and bought with 4 weeks notice.

Dh is having awful problems exporting to EU. The business is really struggling. This week he made one of his staff redundant because of downturn.

My father's friend is shutting his fish processing business that he's run for the last 40+ years. It's a big factory so lots of jobs lost in north west of England in a town not burgeoning with jobs.

I have done loads of business transfers to the EU as part of my job. Just last week I quoted to an automotive sector client who is now looking to move successive parts of their businesses out of the UK as part of their long term strategy.

LastTrainEast · 16/02/2021 18:50

AaronPurr I'm sure the changeover will be very hard, but in the long run it can hardly be sensible to buy everything from another country while your own businesses fail. Especially not a lot of the trivial stuff people named.

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 16/02/2021 18:51

Yes lord forbid we should become more self sufficient as a country. We might actually have to start making and growing more things.

Over and done with. It will be going on for years.
