Myself and a friend’s small business are really struggling - drop in EU customers plus difficulties when some supplies come from EU.

I was about to start a range of new products - can’t find a wholesaler for the very specific items / brands I need in the U.K., so it’s no longer financially viable at all.

babybythesea · 16/02/2021 12:24

Friend who worked in cancer research has gone to Germany to carry on his work. The funding was from the EU and when it came up for renewal last year, they said they supported the project but the condition was that it took place in an EU country. The choice was for another scientist to pick up the research or for him to carry on with it in another country, so he left (his mother is German so it was easy for him to do.)

@AbsitivelyPosolutely

Garage doors are a nightmare at the moment.

I work for a house builder.

This probably isn’t Brexit. It’s the container issue caused by COVID. See also slabs, raw materials etc. Massive issue in shipping from Asia.
Beketaten · 16/02/2021 12:32

Something I wasn't expecting is that now VAT is charged on all purchases under £135 from outside the UK, not just the EU. So goods I was ordering from China are now 20% more expensive. This applies to private sales and second hand items too.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/changes-to-vat-treatment-of-overseas-goods-sold-to-customers-from-1-january-2021/changes-to-vat-treatment-of-overseas-goods-sold-to-customers-from-1-january-2021#:~:text=OMPs%20must%20register%20for%20UK,at%20the%20point%20of%20sale.

bluechameleon · 16/02/2021 12:33

Playmobil I wanted to order for DS2's birthday was going to take 2 weeks to arrive on Amazon Prime so I ordered something else. Not really a big deal.
More seriously, I have seen several very small retailers of Scandi clothes being hit by huge unexpected customs and delivery charges, which I suspect may mean businesses closing as they surely don't have the wiggle room to absorb significant extra costs.

OlympicProcrastinator · 16/02/2021 12:35

Nothing at all.

TotorosFurryBehind · 16/02/2021 12:39

Not being able to order toys online for DD from some suppliers. Some have stopped shipping to UK entirely due to red tape caused by Brexit eg LoveEvery

ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2021 12:40

Just wait till the UK starts obeying WTO rules from April Wink

Shantotto · 16/02/2021 12:48

I can’t buy clothes from my favourite websites as they’ve stopped shipping here. I’m so cross as you just can’t get the full range or it’s more expensive here.

Mamibaer · 16/02/2021 12:50

I live on the continent and it now costs me duties to receive packages from my UK family

Springersrock · 16/02/2021 12:58

The company I work for use parts imported from Italy, Germany and France - huge shortage and massive lead times to the point production has ground to a halt. Bosses are considering whether they’ll have to put shop floor staff on (unpaid) lay-off - we can’t use furlough as it’s not a downturn in work related to COVID - our books are full

We had stockpiled parts that in previous years would have lasted 6 months, but have been a lot, lot busier than usual so have burned through the stock like no bodies business.

Big increase in price on parts where they’re made in Europe, or are made in the UK using materials imported from the EU - in some cases prices have doubled.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 16/02/2021 13:02

The vaccine stuff has nothing to do with brexit. Within the EU you can choose your own vaccine procurement policy in times of national health crises.

SweetPetrichor · 16/02/2021 13:07

Can’t get tarantulas from European breeders and some CITES species can’t be delivered from N. Ireland. Not the end of the world, I would rather order from closer to ensure they spend less time in a box, but it does reduce what you can get a bit.

Also been waiting on a replacement part for a broken loom for two months...the UK distributed is waiting on a delivery getting in. Again, not a big deal really.

Can’t justify buying lovely clothes from Blackmilk cause I’d need to pay additional costs on top of the normal import costs. It was already an expensive treat, now it’s just too costly to justify.

Have to limit my Etsy purchases based on UK only, which again, is sad cause there’s a lot of great stuff from European creators.

I haven’t seen any benefits though.

Brexit is shit.

Insertfunnyname · 16/02/2021 13:11

My parents have both had the covid vaccine

Thank GOD for brexit or we’d be stuck in the eu vaccine program which has been exposed as woefully lacking.

2bazookas · 16/02/2021 13:15

My online Tesco order delivered no aubergines two weeks running.
That's the only time Tesco have ever missed an item from my weekly order. Shock horror.

We managed to survive and thank god, last week they delivered my aubergines.

EileenGC · 16/02/2021 13:16

Parcels being held up at customs until you pay the extra tax on it. A friend was asked to pay £14 import tax for a book that had originally cost £6.
I used to order a specific item I buy regularly from a small family business in the UK, they were cheaper and quicker to ship to Europe than big continent-based providers. Now it costs me too much when you add tax on it, so I’m ‘supporting’ the big online provider instead.
I had to turn down an offer for a masters in the UK, so have numerous friends from EU because now they won’t be able to afford it anymore.

ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2021 13:20

And once we re all vaccinated and getting used to living with COVID, what upsides to Brexit do you envisage ? (so June onwards)

That isn't true.

All member states were given free choice to opt in to the EU vaccine procurement scheme or to source vaccines on their own.

In addition, each state who opted into the scheme is allowed to make independent deals with any provided who hasn't signed a contract with the EU.

sluj · 16/02/2021 13:23

I have discovered some really lovely British cheeses which I will be buying in the future to support my local economy.

BLToutanowhere · 16/02/2021 13:23

Friends of mine work in building supplies. They put price increases down to massive spikes in demand caused by lockdown building works and nothing to do with Brexit.

The local economy remains depressed but frankly that's no different to how it was under the benevolent gaze of the EU.

Other than that, we've seen no issues with deliveries from anywhere and most other things going on are probably to do with a certain virus.

Sorry to not toe the line on this one.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/02/2021 13:24

I've unsubscribed from boden mailing list. Will no longer order anything from the Uk as if it costs more than 8 quid including packaging I have to pay VAT (no big deal) and a handling charge of 20 quid. So a book that costs £9 from book depository will cost me 41.

Have changed amazon settings to .de.

If I travel I now need extra documents.

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 16/02/2021 13:25

Pro EU here, but lots of EU countries exhibit far more xenophobia than the UK, before or since Brexit! Customs like 'Black Pete' at Christmas would not be accepted in the UK and we have no far right parties in power. Brexit was a huge mistake, but to pretend that the EU is a racially tolerant utopia is inaccurate.

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 13:27

Cheaper lobster! An actual upside. Otherwise, not much.

user1471448556 · 16/02/2021 13:27

Two families that were close friends have left. One back to Poland and one back to Iceland. Combination of the initial woeful Covid response here and a general feeling of being unwelcome due to Brexit/settled status, etc.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 16/02/2021 13:29

Ordered something from Germany- a retailer I have used many times in the past because of their very competitive prices. No mention of VAT on the website. When I got the confirmation it said VAT would be added and a handling charge when it was delivered.
I cancelled the order and got it from a UK supplier.
