My DH being told to fuck off back to Poland by emboldened shitheads

Yup, there was no racism in the UK before the Brexit vote was there.

linerforlife · 25/02/2021 13:06

I can now drive through Dover easily as there's fewer lorries on the road at any one time. It's excellent!

Yup, there was no rise in expressions, reports or experiences of it it directly after the Brexit referendum Hmm
TheRedBalloon · 25/02/2021 13:15

I haven't noticed any changes tbh. I had stockpiled food and medicines as I was half expecting empty shelves but all has been OK. DS is on specialist medication produced in the Netherlands and there's been no issues with the supply. Confused

peaceanddove · 25/02/2021 16:17

Absolutely no change here. All the fresh fruit and herbs you could ever want in Waitrose at the weekend and the shelves were all full.

DH owns a construction company and business is through the roof and beyond, hence shortages of building materials. Nothing to do with Brexit.

hatedbytheDailyMail · 25/02/2021 16:20

Thank GOD for brexit or we’d be stuck in the eu vaccine program which has been exposed as woefully lacking

If you cab't make your point without lying, do you have a point?

Nope, is the answer.

sneakysnoopysniper · 25/02/2021 16:25

I run an online business so I buy goods abroad, many in the EU. Ive noticed that whereas before sellers did not charge me VAT but they are now doing so. I am VAT registered and can get the money back but its one more layer of paperwork.

So far as sending items out to customers in the EU there is no difference for me as the platforms I sell on handle the VAT. I have been attaching customs labels to EU packages for over a year now and inputting electronic customs information so there is no difference there.

This must be a pain for individual people (not businesses) buying on the likes of Ebay and having to pay quite a lot more. There are ways around it but Im not going to discuss them on a public forum.

Maybe not today maybe not tomorrow but “Bank of England expects the City of London to lose £25 trillion to £89 trillion in European derivatives trading business over the next year” as UK becomes a competitor rather than partner. Financial Times today.

Plumedenom · 25/02/2021 22:16

My nuclear family live in mainland Europe, rest of my family in the UK.
I have had pay to convert my driving license to eu, pay for sworn translations proving my new married name because I needed to apply for Italian citizenship now because I am still worried about future decisions, I had to get two new documents for my residence here with the word UK on (another 60 quid), I paid 8 pounds at the door to receive a parcel my mum sent from Amazon UK as a gift to Italy, my parents can't come as much as they also have a house in France and they can only ever be away from UK fo three months now or go through an as yet undefined visa proces, I have to carry a proofnof residence when I travel now to stop the Italians stamping my UK passport.

Plumedenom · 25/02/2021 22:43

Reading @Xiaoziong has made me realise that actually, I will pay the bloody 8 quid custons charge and the driving licence conversion and stay here in Europe thanks. Sounds like the finance sector is absolutely screwed in the UK. Brexit is a wrecking ball, and anyone who can't see it yet is either in denial or not that clever I'm afraid. It's a slow process, but the wheels are coming off one by one, and if logistics and finance don't work anymore, what's left of industry exactly?!

BalancedIndividual · 25/02/2021 22:52

@CherryRoulade

Price rises Pet passports More far right, xenophobic culture acceptance Increased building costs due to wood imports Travel delays on A31
Definitely experienced more far right xenophobic culture discrimination and abuse. Basically everyone who was is BNP, UKIP and EDL now feel free to demonstrate and act out their intoletance of others.
England101 · 25/02/2021 23:29

@unmarkedbythat

Lots of our friends leaving/ planning to leave

My kids being afraid our surname will be 'not safe'

My DH being told to fuck off back to Poland by emboldened shitheads

Significant extra costs on things ordered from abroad and delays to delivery

Some firms refusing to accept orders from UK customers due to the delays and customs charges issues

Unfortunately racism has been prevalent in the UK for a long time. Brexit may have increased this, but for some white people I don’t think they saw it as an issue until it affected them. As a black person I have been called a n**r by Polish people, presumably because they were white and in the UK they thought they were accepted but got a massive shock to the system when brexit happened.
littleloopylou · 26/02/2021 00:16

I'm American. Someone just unleashed a spew of xenophobic garbage on me at work recently. Literally said I don't speak proper English, told me to go back where I came from, and said I'm clearly not qualified to do my job

Obviously there's no way to know whether she felt empowered by Brexit, but I received zero abuse like this before Brexit and have gotten it multiple times since.

LookItsMeAgain · 08/03/2021 09:24

I haven't seen this happen before - British shop in Belgium is now being stocked with Irish products due to Brexit issues:

PrincessNutNuts · 30/03/2021 15:45

Due to ignoring everything my DH has tried to do for them over the last four years my in laws are coming to stay with us. For MONTHS.

Every time he has tried to get them to get ready for this they have laughed at him and quoted Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, David Davies or Nigel Farage at him.

They're telling people it's nothing to do with Brexit, they're just coming over to get their jabs and see the family.

But it is to do with Brexit. Their time is up. They are illegal immigrants. They don't want residency, they don't want private health insurance. (They still use the NHS.) They don't want to pay taxes there. Or anywhere TBH.

And I can't imagine they're going to follow the covid rules either.

Me and the kids want to leave home. (So does my DH.)

SadSadSad

Chloemol · 30/03/2021 21:14

None

SunscreenCentral · 30/03/2021 21:21

So you’re just taking them in? @PrincessNutNuts ?? Is this going to be an annual event? 😳

Dontevenstart · 30/03/2021 21:27

Listening to right wing idiots thinking they’ve won something, like it’s a football match.

SprungisSpringYaY · 30/03/2021 21:45

Certainly nothing negative, yet.. However, covid may have masked any immediate issues?

And I have a jab in my arm without any torturous issues wrangling whether we should or shouldn't go alone.. Etc. We could simply. Do. It

Skysblue · 30/03/2021 22:52
  • Lost some major work contracts as a direct result of brexit. Cost my family at least £50k perhaps more, so far.
  • Huge section of the M20 is on narrowed lanes and speed limit of 50mph. Deeply annoying. This was supposed to provide lorry queues space to park while customs stuff is sorted but there doesn’t seem to be many lorries anymore from what I can see.
  • Some products I used to buy cheaply from Europe are now very expensive.
ElephantsNest · 30/03/2021 23:16

Funding opportunities for DH’s work are now much more limited and people in his department have been let go. My game order for DD from Germany was cancelled due to Brexit.
