Do you think the English, if given a vote, would vote for independence from the rest of the UK?

Yabu - No they wouldn't
Yanbu - Yes they would

The break up of the UK seems high chance to me, maybe 60/40 to be voted for within the next ten years. They don't ever seem to ask the English what would you personally vote?

I think its a bit much to say that English people hate Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP. They are just annoyed with the continuous discussion on independence as an idea which they don't actually care about. The one odd thing about Scottish independence is how much the English have to hear about it. Given the relative ratio of population, it seems odd.

SuperheroBirds · 15/02/2021 17:04

I wouldn’t, but given Brexit and other votes, I suspect other people would vote for an Independent England

DioneTheDiabolist · 15/02/2021 17:07

Can you give an example of a referendum where this happened?
The GFA. This page gives more examples and the democratic reasons for Qualified Majorities. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermajority

I'm English, and I don't.

Oh, hang on. Just remembered, I'm half English (as gets pointed out a lot of late).

So what I think doesn't matter.

HirplesWithHaggis · 15/02/2021 17:07

@voluptuagoodshag thanks, but you gave far more detail. Grin And the SNP being irrelevant after indy is an excellent point. (Not so much the current Greens being in charge, though. :( )

Agree with this. It’s also akin to someone going on about how they want to leave, there’s no reason for people in England to want them to nor think about it much.

LOndon leaVE, we can have LO-VE as our slogan,
Vote for LOVE.

partyofsixteen · 15/02/2021 17:12

@araiwa

Whichever annoys the Scots and Welsh the most- I'd do that
God me too. They’re a pain in the ass. Let them go.

I think our slogan should be Legxit

GreenClock · 15/02/2021 17:16

I think that the union is a dying concept and that it will break up over the next 25 years. I suspect that Scotland will go, then NI (reunification), then Wales will gain independence. I think that the pandemic has played a role in this. If asked 12 months ago maybe I’d have written something different.

StCharlotte · 15/02/2021 17:22

I wouldn't vote for it but I sadly believe the English as a whole would.

TableFlowerss · 15/02/2021 17:31

I think most English people are indifferent, in that they wouldn’t have wanted Scotland to leave the UK in the last independence vote, however they wouldn’t be devastated if they did. It’s up to the Scottish citizens and the English can relate to that regarding Brexit.

I do find it ironic though that those that want independence for Scotland, would rather be governed by the EU....

I used to work in a hotel in Manchester years ago and we had to get guests write down their nationality. Very rarely did anyone English not write British. Loads of Scottish guests would not use British but would write Scottish. Again a lot of them did, compared to English who seldom did.

TableFlowerss · 15/02/2021 17:32

I’m particularly referring to Scolded as there’s talk of them wanting another vote - not that I think they’ll get it

TableFlowerss · 15/02/2021 17:33

Scotland

anniegun · 15/02/2021 17:34

Wales has been ruled by the same Kings and Queens as Southern England for longer than parts of Northern and Western England. The history of the UK doesn't neatly divide it into its current 4 parts. Splitting it up probably is not a good idea and you could make a case for (broadly) southern England being a different country historically from the rest.

tara66 · 15/02/2021 17:34

London would leave the rest behind if it could.

I see this comment a lot.

A majority of Scottish voters want to be part of the EU.

I'd certainly take adhering to EU law any day of the week over being ruled by an increasingly right wing England.

It's interesting that Washington D.C. is not actually part of the state(s) it sits in.
Stripesnomore · 15/02/2021 17:39

It would be interesting to see what London would be like as a financial district once the national museums, art galleries, cultural centres, libraries, research centres, BBC and government had gone. It would be a massive cultural boost to all the cities that received those institutions.

Dione you’ve lost me did you mention this in your post? I may have missed it.

I find your idea of minimum majority interesting. Certainly I would have welcomed that.

@Stripesnomore

I really don’t think the Welsh in general dislike the English. There sense of themselves as a nation is far more about the strength of their own culture and political contribution, not who they are in relation to the English.
We truly adore how the English tried to eradicate our language, we have the fondest memories of villages they drown for drinking water oh and we all have a chuckle about how the English have priced most people out of their local communities so that they have a 2nd home where they can look down on us and think that were talking about them when we speak in our own language

London was a cultural pool long before the state came in and funded things and declared institutions. It's people who make a place and the ideas they generate and I think London would be fine - as one of the most innovative parts of the UK with a great cosmopolitan atmosphere. An independent England isn't going to change all of that overnight!
