How many hours do you work per week if you are full time?

I'm curious about how much extra work people do in their roles. I'm job hunting, and depending on the company culture, sometimes long hours are to be expected.

How many hours do you end up working on an average week?

OP posts:
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 12/02/2021 17:14

I'm contracted 37.5 (9-5 mon to thurs, 9-4.30 fri) 30mins a day for lunch.

I dont do more unless there is an urgent delay on something. Our whole business closes outside those hours and we contract out an Out of Hours service as needed.

Lazypuppy · 12/02/2021 17:16

Contracted to 37.5. Any extra ia clocked on a flexi system, so every few weeks i'll take a day off using my buily up flexi.

If i didn't get the time back i wouldn't work extra

Eeyorehoney · 12/02/2021 17:18

Same as @Lazypuppy

CoronaIsWatching · 12/02/2021 17:18
  1. Would never go back to 37.5 or 40 again.
TheNinny · 12/02/2021 17:20

Officially 37.5 but sometimes stay on 30 mins or so to tie up loose ends

pitterpatterrain · 12/02/2021 17:20

45-55 is more the norm and it can peak a bit higher than that, pretty normal for the industry (consulting)

Not sure what the original contract says per se, no flexi etc it’s more get the stuff done

FredaFox · 12/02/2021 17:20

Contracted for 37.5 most weeks I work 50, some weeks more
No overtime pay, my manager is good with time off if things occur e.g. needing time off for workmen Or doctors/ dentist etc.
I get good gifts at Christmas/ birthday and I'm sometimes treated to getting my nails done etc or lunch

Nacreous · 12/02/2021 17:22

Contracted for 37.5. In normal times I do maybe 40-42 hours a week usually. The odd week when I do maybe 35, and there's no questions asked if I need an afternoon off for a doctor's appointment or whatever, and I wouldn't take leave if I need to leave at 3 one day etc.

Busy times of year up to 60 but then get that back as TOIL in the main. Currently 60 hours a week regularly but that's hideously unsustainable and is slowly starting to come down having complained vociferously over the last couple of weeks.

HermioneWeasley · 12/02/2021 17:23

Contract says 40. Always do at least 50. Bad week would be 70. I’m senior and do what it takes to get the job done

Rhayader · 12/02/2021 17:24

I do 40 hours-ish but at crunch times I have ended up doing more like 60. DH works around 50-60 normally but can end up working 100 when it’s crunch time. I don’t think DHs hours are sustainable but he is very well paid.

DrRamsesEmerson · 12/02/2021 17:25

40-50, depending on how busy I am. Contract says 36. Senior public sector.

PinkPlantCase · 12/02/2021 17:27

Contracted for 37.5 this week was really hard at about 52 hours.

Probably work around 45 hours in a non crazy week.

No overtime it TOIL. I could work less but I’d let people down and would be underperforming.

Currently approaching my third trimester and knackered!

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/02/2021 17:27

Work 37 1/2 hours every other week and 50 hours the other weeks.

Andbearsohmy · 12/02/2021 17:29

I'm expected to be at work 35 hours a week but I work 50-60 hours per week (teacher).

Goostacean · 12/02/2021 17:30

Would be interesting to know what level people are at and/or what industry they’re in (not that you asked, OP). As a pp, I’m in consulting and if you don’t get the job done regardless of the hours, you’ll be managed out. But starting salaries are over 1.5 times the national average salary, so... 🤷‍♀️

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 12/02/2021 17:31

I'm glad to see this is balanced - these threads usually turn into competitive workaholic boasting fairly fast.

I work my hours exactly over the year, but its averaged out so it can equally be a 60 hour week or a 15 hour week. I always know in advance and have some say and some flexibily, give or take an emergency at the end of a shift. I work shifts and log my time. Full time is 39 hours.

DH is full time at 30 hours and senior - while he also has to do what it takes to get the job done he's very efficient and gets things done in his hours 99% of the time. He logs his hours to projects and usually flexi-times his hours to finish by 12 on a Friday and give himself extra full days off when needed.

Mandalakia · 12/02/2021 17:32

Those of you that work overtime for free, why do you do it? Is it to climb the ladder?

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/02/2021 17:33

Im a senior care, in a residential dementia home working nights.

Echobelly · 12/02/2021 17:33

I work 9-5 each day (or eqiuvalent hours) and no more... luckily I don't have a job that's overworked or where I'm expected to put in long hours; as far as possible I don't believe in working unless I am being paid for it, and there's no overtime pay in my line.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 12/02/2021 17:33

*sorry he's full time at 35 hours, 39 for me. He's "senior" and I'm mid level as I career changed but am fully qualified.

Saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousa · 12/02/2021 17:33

Contracted for 35 hours, usually do about 38 to 40

CharlotteRose90 · 12/02/2021 17:34

I do 40 a week Monday to Thursday 8-6 and I love it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/02/2021 17:34

That should have said carer.

MangoWeetabix · 12/02/2021 17:34
  1. Would never do 40 again.
Batshitkerazy · 12/02/2021 17:36

37 hours a week, but probably do about 40 since WFH
