How many hours do you work per week if you are full time?

I'm curious about how much extra work people do in their roles. I'm job hunting, and depending on the company culture, sometimes long hours are to be expected.

How many hours do you end up working on an average week?

I'm a single parent so I work as close to my hours as possible - 8.30 - 5pm, 8-2pm Friday. I will work more when absolutely needed, but it's not practically possible most of the time. My boss knew this when they hired me. I'm a manager, office based.

Dobedohdahdee · 12/02/2021 20:03

At our place full time is 40 hours ie 9-6 with an hour lunch.

slothpaw · 12/02/2021 20:04

50-60 usually, I'm a teacher

OrangeBananaFish · 12/02/2021 20:07

In my current job I am contracted for 39 hours and work these. I could work 70 hours a week and still not get the work done to the standard that I'd like so I've given up now.

I am starting a new job soon with another company, this one is 37.5 hours a week. Will see how much more I do. I'm happy to do more if its worth it, but in my current job it really isn't

Its sad to see (on this thread) so many jobs that can't be done in the allotted time. That's not because people cant do it, but there is too much work and it is expected that people do this extra work for free. Or is it the case that perhaps some jobs shouldn't be contracted as hours, but work IYSWIM? Or do people genuinely love their jobs or in a dream career?

Scrumbleton · 12/02/2021 20:08

Contracted for 35. Mostly work around 45 but salary is good so reasonably happy - financial services management . DP - civil service management is contracted for 37.5 but work 50-60 most weeks

steph2412 · 12/02/2021 20:11

37.5, but I am considering dropping to 36 from April, pre covid I probably worked 40 most weeks now it's more like 42-45

queenofthelamas · 12/02/2021 20:15

Contracted 37 a week. I regularly do 45

WannabeMathematician · 12/02/2021 20:15

On Mat leave now but normally work about 40h for 37.5 paid. What does a 70h week look like? do you all do 8am until 8.30? every day? Or is it spread over Saturday and Sundays as well?

Oddly, if you were doing 70h weeks in my work I'd think they'd manage you out as no one else wants that culture.

DavidDuchovnysRedPants · 12/02/2021 20:16

37.5. Probably in normal times do about 5 hours a week extra. Quieter times will just do my hours. Currently do probably ten hours over. I'm mid level. Not management. Work NHS. I do extra hours as the work has to get done and we're painfully short staffed.

Catchingfire123 · 12/02/2021 20:17

When I was full time it was 37hr but would work anywhere between 35-50 depending on work peak and troughs. Company are quite good for delivery’s / doctors / dentist appointments so can’t complain. Most managers have seen it as give and take a bit. If they treat us well we are more likely to work those extra hours when needed without hesitation

lovelyupnorth · 12/02/2021 20:19

Currently furlough before was doing around 50. Once we can operate again will be doing 70-80 as won’t be able to afford staff so will need to do 7 days a week this year. At least till October. Assuming Johnson gets his act together and ends the lockdown at some point.

Somanysplitends · 12/02/2021 20:28

Contracted 37.5, some weeks only do about 20, others 60. Reckon it probably equals out across the year. Just depends what we've got on. I used to always make sure I did at least 37.5 every week but just ended up picking up other people's work on my quiet weeks but they never picked up mine on theirs so I just do my own shit now Grin

QueenPaw · 12/02/2021 20:30

Car aftersales. 40hrs (not including breaks)
Don't work a minute more as no work to do when we close!

Boopeedoop · 12/02/2021 20:32

Minimum of 60 hours. Ambulance worker. That's 5 shifts a week.

Musicalmistress · 12/02/2021 20:37

My contract says 35hours (full time Mon-Fri) - the only time i was close to this was when I was coming treated for 3 days a week. 🤷🏼‍♀️

multivac · 12/02/2021 20:41

Contracted 37.5. Currently averaging 45-50; there's a lot to do, I can't delegate, and I am excited about the projects I'm working on. WFH makes the longer hours much more sustainable. Senior management do not expect or even condone excessive hours (indeed, due to the pressures of WFH and homeschooling etc, they recently announced the working day would finish 39 mins earlier for everyone until April) - but they don't really know how much it goes on at my level (senior but not too level).

teenagetantrums · 12/02/2021 20:44

Contracted for 35. Probably do about an average of 40...that's my choice though l could stick to the 35.

sbhydrogen · 12/02/2021 20:45

I do 9:30 - 6pm with an hour for lunch, plus various breaks during the day.

Scandie · 12/02/2021 20:49

60 hours. By choice.

blue25 · 12/02/2021 20:49

36 officially, but often work less as I can often get my work done quickly.

RedcurrantPuff · 12/02/2021 20:50

@TheNinny

Officially 37.5 but sometimes stay on 30 mins or so to tie up loose ends
This exactly
canipressthebackbuttonplease · 12/02/2021 20:54

35 hours is the contract, but it takes about 15 hours to actually do the work.

user85963842 · 12/02/2021 20:57

36, I don't do more. Actually only working about 26 hours atm but being paid full time because I am taking special leave most days to homeschool. Civil service.

CatherineCawood · 12/02/2021 20:59

Contracted.37.5 rarely do less than 50

notforonesecond · 12/02/2021 21:00
  1. Don’t often do more but it’s full flexi with no core hours so any extra time I get back as flexi leave.
