How many hours do you work per week if you are full time?

I'm curious about how much extra work people do in their roles. I'm job hunting, and depending on the company culture, sometimes long hours are to be expected.

How many hours do you end up working on an average week?

Consultant so will do however many hours are required if they pay my hourly rate.

ufucoffee · 12/02/2021 21:04

Contracted for 37.5. Don't take a dinner break unless I'm going out to shop, otherwise just eat at desk. Working later can be saved as flex time but if you build up too much you lose it and it's questioned so I don't note it all down. I don't mind working extra hours to get the job done.

Bargebill19 · 12/02/2021 21:04

Contracts for 25. But I do 60+ most weeks.
Boss has just flipped because I refuse to work through my booked holiday next week.
The first since last March.
Job hunting may be quicker than me actually getting holiday.

Director level, quasi public sector. I try to keep it to 50 hpw. It's been a v hard year and I rarely switch off totally.

Thewishingchair123 · 12/02/2021 21:13

Not officially full time, but may as well be. I’m contracted 34 hours Monday to Thursday.

In reality for the last few months (exacerbated wfh) it’s been very regular 11 hour days Mon - Thurs, plus maybe a couple of hours on Friday, my supposed day off, and have put in time on weekends too.

Trying to stop the weekend work at least, as the week is already so exhausting and I just want some life back and time with my family!
Do it because of sheer work load and lack of similar salary options if I were to move company. But it’s getting to the point where the stress/hours are just not worth the money!

Alwaysready · 12/02/2021 21:15

Contracted 37.5 probably another 4-6 usually. Teacher

Bumply · 12/02/2021 21:18

Senior but not management role in IT.
Contracted 35 hours per week.
Occasionally work extra but get it back as TOIL.
Previous job I also did out of hours support, but that paid fixed fee extra whether you were called or not, so depended whether you got lucky or had a god awful night/weekend.

CosmicComfort · 12/02/2021 21:20

NHS here, contracted to 37.5, work 4 hours a week unpaid overtime on average as I never get a break and normally do an extra shift on bank so normal working week is 50 hours!

hibbledibble · 12/02/2021 21:21

I'm surprised at how low the hours are for many people on full time contracts.

I'm a 'part time' doctor, but I do more than 40 hours a week, sometimes 70+

wirldsgonemad · 12/02/2021 21:35

35

KateF · 12/02/2021 21:41

Nursery practitioner. Officially 41(8-6 x4 days with a lunch hour and 8-1 on the other) but expected to be in early to set up and rarely leave at 6 since a few parents pick up at 6 on the dot so I'm doing handovers until 6.15 or so. Do unpaid extra in evenings and weekends such as preparing activities or catching up on paperwork. Sometimes have extra paid time for training or staff meetings and pre-Covid for monthly open days.

RandyGiles06 · 12/02/2021 21:43

Contracted for 35 and can get done what I need to within that time but wouldn’t mind working over if I needed to as long as it wasn’t all the time. In previous roles (same company) I have needed to work more hours to fit everything in but I was angling for a promotion then so I didn’t mind Smile

I thought 35 hours was standard “office” hours but 37.5 seems to be cropping up more often now so I must be lucky!

QueenoftheAir · 12/02/2021 21:46

50-60 hours. But I’m senior and for my profession, I earn quite a lot (not in the league of banking, law or the Civil Service high earners though!)

LeSquigh · 12/02/2021 21:48

I work shifts, and am contracted to do 48 hours but generally always do 60.

Hyppogriff · 12/02/2021 21:50

I think contract says 37.5. Probably
Average about 50.

BrilliantBetty · 12/02/2021 21:50

35hours paid.
You also have to take an unpaid one hour lunch break each day.

(So it's really 40hrs IMO)

Mamagotskills · 12/02/2021 21:51

No idea what my contract is, i probably do 45ish now. Prior to covid I did a lot of business travel do hard to work out how much counts as actual ‘work’

LilyE1234 · 12/02/2021 21:52

Contracted 42.5. 8-5:30 every day (1 hour for lunch). That extra hour in the morning is noticeable 😑

Bandino · 12/02/2021 21:53

Council. Contracted to do 37. If I do more 8 get it back.

DiamondBright · 12/02/2021 21:54

I'm contracted to work 37.5 but it's very flexible, even more so now we're WFH. There's no formal Flexi at my grade but it's acceptable to finish early the odd day or take a longer lunch break if you've been working extra hours, as long as the work gets done. No one monitors anyone's hours only their productivity.

Stompythedinosaur · 12/02/2021 21:56

I'm paid for 37.5, but I probably work 45 because of understaffed issues.

Really hard to know. I am contracted full time, but I can go weeks working a couple of hours a day, or I could be working 16 or 18 hour days.

JiggeryWokery · 12/02/2021 22:11

37.5. I manage the workflow for a department and don't expect anyone in the team to do any overtime. Salary is pretty average.

waxed · 12/02/2021 22:17

Contracted 40 hours, but I only take about 15 mins of my 30 min lunch break, which builds up to over an hour extra a week, and I stay half an hour/45 mins late probably about twice a week. I would say I work around 43/44 hours extra a week without extra pay.

The reason - I end up losing track of time and I don't like leaving tasks half done, so I work until I've finished what I'm doing (unless it's a large/more significant job). Plus I feel that my salary is reasonable so I don't feel hard done by.
