How many hours do you work per week if you are full time?

I'm curious about how much extra work people do in their roles. I'm job hunting, and depending on the company culture, sometimes long hours are to be expected.

How many hours do you end up working on an average week?

Contracted 35, rarely work over this but will do if needed. I work for a charity so have also given free time at weekends occasionally e.g. marshalling at sporting events. This isn't expected and we're treated very well, so I'm happy to be flexible and show some goodwill.

MatLeave · 12/02/2021 18:09

35 hours per week.

Newnamedillydally · 12/02/2021 18:10

Contracted 37.5 hours currently doing about 50 hours a week. Work in a specialist role in Pharma. No direct reports etc but some input into head of department projects.

Marmite27 · 12/02/2021 18:13

35 is full time with my company. I don’t need to do any extra. Occasionally with big projects we’ve done a very early morning (4am/5am) but not for years.

Due to childcare I currently start at 6am so most stuff falls into that.

Oblomov21 · 12/02/2021 18:15

This thread is so sad, so wrong. Those that think this doesn't go on, across the board, across all industries, only need to read thus thread. Sad

MustardMitt · 12/02/2021 18:16

I am contracted for 35 hours, but may do more if business needs it.

Even during the busiest Covid times I never did more than an extra hour. This week I’ve done significantly less. Lots of flexibility so can start and finish early if needed.

LadyofMisrule · 12/02/2021 18:17

Contractor. Usually about 60 hours a week.

MrsPworkingmummy · 12/02/2021 18:23

I work on average 7 hours per day, sometimes up to 9, sometimes as low as 6. I get paid close to £50,000. My role involves teaching and supporting vulnerable teenagers who are at risk of extreme criminal behaviour. Fortunately, because of this role, I also get teacher holidays and pension. The job is not for everyone, can be frightening, is very literally hands on but I LOVE it.

HollyGoLoudly1 · 12/02/2021 18:24

I'm contracted 35 but work around 40. Sometimes less, sometimes more. I do it because I don't find it possible to do my work to the standard I want in the time I have. Something always crops up and the extra time is necessary.

2ndAugust · 12/02/2021 18:25

37.5 contracted. Actually work every lunch hour too and maybe 2.5 hours per week extra. In an admin role but training for a position within the company. High stress low pay. Looking for another job daily, been there just shy of 2 years and worried to make a fuss incase they get rid of me. There are hardly any jobs out this in this area. (South)Salary will double when I’m qualified.

Heyahun · 12/02/2021 18:27

35 never more than that

Whatapalavaa · 12/02/2021 18:29

Contracted 35. End up doing 40-45.

FreakinFrankNFurter · 12/02/2021 18:31

I’m not full time, I do 4 full days which is 29 hours. It’s flexi so any extra I do i can take off later. Those in my role who are full time do the same. No one is really doing above their contracted 36 hours without taking it off as flexi

Public sector role at non managerial level but well paid

nevernotstruggling · 12/02/2021 18:33
  1. Sw. In previous service I regularly accrued crazy amounts of toil. I wrote off 40 hours when I left.
CherryRoulade · 12/02/2021 18:34

Contracted 37.5 but do far more usually. Ours is peaks and troughs - sometimes only 40 but other times nearer 70.

AlwaysCheddar · 12/02/2021 18:35

Contracted 37, do 45 easily, sometimes cover 50/60.

lockdownalli · 12/02/2021 18:36

Contracted to work 35 which is FT. Not permitted to work longer. If we absolutely have to work longer hours, we have to take back as Time Off In Lieu the next week.

I work in Legal sector.

notalwaysalondoner · 12/02/2021 18:36

I work in top tier management consulting and I'd say I normally do 8am-7pm 3 days a week, 730am -10pm 1 day a week, 830am - 6pm day 1 day a week. It varies a lot though - good weeks are all 815am - 630pm, bad weeks can be starting at 0730 and finishing at 2230 or later every day, although those are rare for me. I do normally have at least 30 mins for lunch but no other real proper breaks beyond grabbing a coffee.

Until I got promoted to management level last year though I was able to keep it more to 9am - 7pm 5 days a week most weeks.

It's very much expected long hours are part of the job, we are paid extremely well and get all kinds of perks, although they recognise burnout is an issue particularly for the mid management layers and are trying to address this. I don't think they'll succeed though, it's so ingrained in the culture that 'clients come first'.

It certainly would be regarded with disbelief if you announced you only ever worked 9-6. Even those with children are expected to go offline from 1800-1930 while they put the kids to bed then do 3-4 hours more work after that. The exception is some of our internal business support colleagues - I'm planning to switch to an internal role after I have my baby in the summer as it's not the life I want after children.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/02/2021 18:40

I am part time but the full time staff do 37 hours. No one does extra. We are an admin team in the manufacturing industry.

christmasathomeagain · 12/02/2021 18:42

I'm contracted to 37. A normal week is easily 40/42 but also 45/50 plus happens once every 4/6 weeks then in sept/oct 50 plus is every week.

In school hols I usually just work the 37 though and sometimes less.

RevolutionRadio · 12/02/2021 18:51

37.5

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 12/02/2021 18:56

Contracted 37.5 but usually do 40-45 & end of year will be approx 50-55 - anything over 40 is paid at my equivalent hourly rate.

I work from home 4 days a week in non-covid times, have flexible start/finish times & there's no issue with me logging off for an hour or so during the day for doctors, dentist, school appointments etc - when shops started limiting numbers during the first lockdown I booked out my Asda shop in my diary every Thursday 1-3pm.

I manage the payroll department in a private accountancy practice.

RichPetunia · 12/02/2021 19:03
  1. Working from home so sometimes work a little less, sometimes work more. I’m feel I’m fortunate with my work situation so don’t mind doing extra if I need to.
Tanfastic · 12/02/2021 19:04

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

I'm contracted 37.5 (9-5 mon to thurs, 9-4.30 fri) 30mins a day for lunch.

I dont do more unless there is an urgent delay on something. Our whole business closes outside those hours and we contract out an Out of Hours service as needed.

Same.

DisneyMillie · 12/02/2021 19:08

I’m contracted to do 3 days a week so 22.5 hours - normally probably do a day extra -currently I’m not doing much more than contracted as homeschooling too but I’m falling behind so need to find some spare hours in the day somewhere! - realistically you always need to do more hours in a lot of “management” level jobs - I’m an accountant - all my colleagues at my level or above work extra hours. It’s part of the expectation.
