How many hours do you work per week if you are full time?

I'm curious about how much extra work people do in their roles. I'm job hunting, and depending on the company culture, sometimes long hours are to be expected.

How many hours do you end up working on an average week?

35 and I try and do just that. When it is busy I will work extra to get work done but we have flexi so I just take the time off in the less busy periods.

waxed · 12/02/2021 22:18

Oops i meant 3/4 extra - 43/44 total.

CrochetOrBust · 12/02/2021 22:42

35 hours contracted, normally do between 35 and 40 hours. Used to do more when meetings involved travelling around the country!

Animum2 · 12/02/2021 22:43

Mine is 35 contracted but I also collect daily figures from the team, to give to management, but I don't always get them by the time I leave work so I do them when i get home so an extra 20 mins a day

Dee03 · 12/02/2021 22:46

I'm contracted 48....4 12 hr shifts but mostly do 60.....get paid time and a half for overtime

RosesAndHellebores · 12/02/2021 22:59

Aah you see @Dee03 as a senior member of staff, no overtime is payable.

Dee03 · 12/02/2021 23:03

Oh that's no good Roses.....

toocold54 · 12/02/2021 23:37

Teacher - contracted 35 hours but do at least 50 per week

JaceLancs · 13/02/2021 00:40

I’m salaried - based on 37 hour week
I would say on average I do 50-55 hours

DustyMaiden · 13/02/2021 00:44

I recently took a job as a carer in a care home. I was told I would need to do a minimum of 74 hrs per week.

Dee03 · 13/02/2021 00:47

74 hrs a week! I work nights in a care home and a lot of people work 36/48 hrs with the odd person working 24 hrs a week. The overtime is there if people want it but 74 hrs a week is ridiculous

Rainboom · 13/02/2021 00:48

Meant to be 37.5 but usually 50-55 a week. Some days I work through lunch break

DustyMaiden · 13/02/2021 00:52

@Dee03. It is ridiculous I resigned, I’m too old for that.

Dee03 · 13/02/2021 00:54

Don't blame you. I find 48 hard going most of the time and I'm 47 years old 😁

Pyewhacket · 13/02/2021 01:07

Depends if we are short it trained staff, 50-60 some weeks. But that can’t go on for ever. It would effect your MH.

letsghostdance · 13/02/2021 01:40

Teacher. Only ever work past my contracted hours when reports are due. In at 8, out at 3:30.

grassisjeweled · 13/02/2021 01:50

Bill for 40.

Jackie2022 · 13/02/2021 01:53

37.5 but in a culture where overtime is considered being a “hard working team player” so working later is typical

MoominFeatures · 13/02/2021 05:16

Contracted for 37.5 but that’s pretty meaningless in my industry. Don’t have flexi time or overtime either. c70 is probably my typical quota. In Q3 and Q4 last year I was working 100-110+ per week. It was total hell and by Christmas I felt physically and mentally broken.

Lotuu · 13/02/2021 05:50

37.5 hours. Never work a minute extra because usually I’m trying to find things to do for the last hour because I’ve finished my work too quick.
Lately I’ve been doing an extra day overtime but I get double pay for that day. If I didn’t I wouldn’t do it.

maddy68 · 13/02/2021 05:55

Well while we're were in the EU we were only legally allowed to work for 42 hours. Interesting to see how that changes

mynameiscalypso · 13/02/2021 06:09

There was always an ability to opt out of the EU working time directive which most people I know did/do as part of their employment contract.
Marmite27 · 13/02/2021 06:12

@Marmite27

35 is full time with my company. I don’t need to do any extra. Occasionally with big projects we’ve done a very early morning (4am/5am) but not for years.

Due to childcare I currently start at 6am so most stuff falls into that.

Forgot to add TOIL was given for the advice early starts.

I’m part of a subsidiary company that’s 24h, but they are VERY hot on work / life balance. I work in a support function, so we’re more office hours.

VashtaNerada · 13/02/2021 06:13

Basic hours 7:30 - 5:30 but regularly work evenings, weekends, annual leave days (teacher). Always work through my lunch break. BUT much more job satisfaction than when I did a 9-5 office job so I really don’t mind it. I think that teachers (or anyone with long hours) who work somewhere unpleasant or unsupportive must be having the most dreadful time Sad

icklekid · 13/02/2021 06:14

I work 40 hours over 4 days- I’m paid 0.8, work in school leadership. Feels like working full time and looking at this thread the hours are probably why! In other industry would probably be paid full time just working compressed hours. The day off is worth it through- or at least it is when I’m not home schooling!!
