How many hours do you work per week if you are full time?

I'm curious about how much extra work people do in their roles. I'm job hunting, and depending on the company culture, sometimes long hours are to be expected.

How many hours do you end up working on an average week?

OP posts:
Mummyto2rugrats · 12/02/2021 17:37

I'm contracted 40 but if I have deadlines due I can usually work up to 50. My new place really encourages work life balance my last place was contracted 37.5 but would usually work upto 70hr due sheer volume of work

thekingfisher · 12/02/2021 17:38

Ha ha i'm technically 4 days a week /28 hours - I easily work 40 hours a week.

LonstantonSpiceMuseum · 12/02/2021 17:38

Great question OP, I'm also curious.
It would be interesting to know the industry or broad job role that goes with those hours too (As much as comfortably shared)
I was doing 80/90 per week until last month when I started a new job and I'm now doing 50.
I work an IT role in financial services

Sciurus83 · 12/02/2021 17:40

I'm part time 32 hours but full time would be 37, civil service. I try to stick to it, but it often goes over. I take this back where I can and am lucky my job is flexible. So many people working huge amounts of overtime for free, this culture is so damaging to us

Poshjock · 12/02/2021 17:40

Contracted 45 hours per week. In reality probably work less most weeks, occasionally working more if evenings and weekend afternoons are required. I work residential in a heavy Industrial site with 24 hour operations.

PattyPan · 12/02/2021 17:41

I’m contracted for 35 hours and usually do about that.

PattyPan · 12/02/2021 17:42

Oh and I work for a government body

AbsitivelyPosolutely · 12/02/2021 17:43

Contractually, I'm supposed to work 8-4.

But things have changed since working from home and I now have a 4pm meeting every day bar Friday so I generally do 8:15/8:20 - 5/5:30.

I've no idea what a lunch break is.

EachBleachBlairTrump · 12/02/2021 17:43

Officially 37 this week I worked 45 over 4 days.... Public sector I'll be told it's TOIL but I'll never get time to take it, payoff overtime is rarer than hen's teeth

EachBleachBlairTrump · 12/02/2021 17:44

And actually that doesn't account for the thirty minute unpaid lunch break I don't have chance to take every day

Meruem · 12/02/2021 17:44

Contracted 37, during a busy week I work maybe 20 hours (not over the 37, just 20 hours) on a quiet week I might do less than 5 hours total. It’s wfh so I just do other stuff and check my emails in case something does come in.

But, it is actually below my pay grade and thus the wages are not fantastic. Better than minimum but not high. We have a set amount of work to get through on any given week and I can just do it a lot faster than the others (or maybe they’re not doing many hours either!). I don’t cut corners, it’s just not difficult work and I have lots of prior experience.

I took it at a time when I was burnt out and needed something low stress. It’s been perfect for that. At some point I may need to go back into a scenario where I earn more (and will be expected to do a full weeks work!) but for now it’s good.

Biker47 · 12/02/2021 17:48

37 hours a week, optional paid overtime which I usually work. I wouldn't dare work past my hours without additional pay.

Aprilx · 12/02/2021 17:50

@Mandalakia

Those of you that work overtime for free, why do you do it? Is it to climb the ladder?
Everywhere I have worked expects it, the contract always states base hours, but there will be a clause along the lines of “at times it will be necessary to work extra in order to complete tasks”.

It isn’t necessarily to climb the ladder, although it would help, but it is more that it would be career limiting to not do it.

My occupation is accountant. I started work in 1992, always worked for multinationals and I have worked in three countries, same everywhere.

unbotheredbutbewildered · 12/02/2021 17:51

41hrs per week.

Frequently do 60+. Would do more but sleep is required...sometimes.

Iamfudgingfreezing · 12/02/2021 17:53

I would 60-75 hours a week.

icelollycraving · 12/02/2021 17:54

Paid for 37.5, often do around 42.5, sometimes more.

Retszol · 12/02/2021 17:57

I’m similar to @Saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousa and @thekingfisher - contracted for 32 and working 35-40. Unpaid lunch of one hour that I seldom get.

biibbiibobby · 12/02/2021 17:57

Paid for 39...I do 39...anything extra is overtime!

biibbiibobby · 12/02/2021 17:58

And I take a breakfast break and a lunch break of 20mins each... hours are 7am to 3pm

GintyMcGinty · 12/02/2021 17:59

35 hours per week. Flexi start and finish. Any extra hours work I get back.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 12/02/2021 17:59

I'm contracted for 37.5 a week. I'm a community support worker so if there is something urgent that a user needs me to do and it's near the end of their support time, I'll work over to do it. On the plus side though, if all support is finished, reports are written up and there is nothing more to do that day then I will leave early.

CMOTDibbler · 12/02/2021 18:01

No chuffing idea. It gets longer every week

youlittlecharmer · 12/02/2021 18:02

Similar to Meruem above, contracted for 37 I think but actual work probably takes up half that on an average week, for various reasons. Only pays 19k though and I would resent working flat out for that amount tbh.

hitsvilleuk · 12/02/2021 18:02

Contracted 48
Work about 60 if you include emails/calls/on calls out of hours but is variable, usually worse.

evouk · 12/02/2021 18:04

42

Currently work only three days a week and furloughed for the other two days
